Canada use soviet style better than soviets?

I don't think so.

I think they've integrated some of the possession game that the USSR used, but for the most part, they still play a traditional North American grinding cycle game.

Of course, the style of game they play is impacted by roster makeup and coaching strategy as well.

A Babcock coached Team Canada would be as different from a Quenneville coached Team Canada as the Red Wings were from the Blackhawks.

More adapted the Soviet style and incorporated it. Basically borrowed it and adapted it to the hard, heart and soul 100% effort style Canadians are known for.

The Soviets were masters at puck control and circular motion. The modern cycle in the offensive zone that Canada has mastered has Soviet roots I would argue as a historian of the game.

It's more like the old Montreal Canadiens style than anything else. Dependable two way centres, defencemen who can effectively into the play at appropriate times, good skaters, elite goaltending. Montreal did that for decades. Same model as Montreal from the 1950s through the 1970s. Canada shoots too much and forechecks too much to be using the Soviet style, though of course there are similarities.

Hockey just like any sport evolves. Usually people try to incorporate styles that they see others use and if possible try to incorporate into their own teams style to make it more effective. So, yeah some attributes may have been used, but puck possession is something only the more skilled team can do. Canada can do it to other teams because their skill level is higher. The Swedes can't use a puck possession game against Can but against a country like Latvia, they would be able to because now they are the more skilled team.

That's why its sucked when a defensive team like NJ won Stanley cup, everyone tried to copy them with the trap and it became dead puck era

Heart and soul. Hockey is our game. It is who we are.

Canadians will fight until the very end with everything we have. Hockey is more than a game for us.
Well we have sisu :naughty:.

I think Canada plays it's own game. It's rather hard to incorporate the Soviet style of hockey, as those guys would do nothing but train, rather inhumane.

First, if Soviet hockey existed right now, it would be pretty fast as well. I bet, it would use quick passes to overcome Canadian forecheck and pressure, because you wouldn't see defensemen like Marchenko and Orlov on the team, who need 1.5 sec to make a pass. Right to the opposite team's player.

Then, Soviet forecheck would be very hard on Canadians as well, not sure their defense would look that great under it.

Quick passing game, unexpected decisions (very-well calculated/trained though), and much better skating are what allowed Soviets from the past beat team Canada. When a team can execute plays at a high speed any team Canada, including the current one, is immediately off their game. The problem is that it is almost impossible to do...

Out of all teams at the WCH Russians are the closest to that style (I would also recall Swedes of the past with Sundin, Forsberg, Lidstrom, etc.), but, unfortunately our D sucks big time...

So the receipt is there, there is no personnel. You can also out-grind Canada but you need a very specific roster and a lot of puck luck. I would bet the result will be similar to Sochi when Canada allowed 3 or 4 goals in the whole tournament.

In alternat universe:(

Canadians will fight with their entire being and never quit. Hockey is who we are, I don't think other countries have that connection to their identity.

Finns for example love hockey and are the closest country I can think of that share this quality. Even still, hockey is our game. It's how the world knows us, it means everything to us. I think this will always give Canadians our own style at the end of the day.

Not to nitpick. But although hockey is part of the Canadian identity, it's not what the world knows you by. Most of the globe doesn't know a thing about hockey let alone that Canada is good at it.

Most of the world knows nothing about us. The little they do know, it's hockey, poutine, and maple syrup.

We're more like your little brother. But, we own you at hockey. Even our leaders exchange trash talk over hockey when they get together .

I can guarantee no one knows what poutine is. They'd think of Vladimir Putin

Whoever thinks Canada plays something called "Soviet style" ought to watch some old recordings first. Nothing, especially today, compares to how the Soviets played.
