Canada Soccer Part VIII: World Cup Hosts Edition

Mexico has locked in A1 because they have the H2H against Korea.

The only possible change is that if South Africa beats South Korea and Czechia doesn't beat Mexico then South Africa would be A2.

And now that I think of it, if both South Africa and Czechia beat South Korea and Mexico, it would come down to GD.
Right - thanks

Really choked. Heartbroken...Once in a lifetime opportunity to watch Canada play a knockout game in Vancouver and it's all done.

The story this tournament was injuries. There was a rumor at the start of the tournament about Davies probably sitting out until July. I got false hope...but it's clear he will not be drawing in and will likely be a bench mascot the rest of the way.

Other thoughts:
-Kone and Staq getting injured destroyed our posession game and weakened our attack. We relied on the prayer balls and really had no success in breaching the Swiss backline.
-Crepeau is a medicore keeper that does not have the athleticism or reach to make saves.
-Larin is too slow against quality clubs

Another point...Jesse Marsch is always too late to make adjustments. It was clear at 25 min that Larin was not ready to go and likely picked up an injury. Also clear the backline was getting beat and not dialed in. Should have absolutely made changes at the half.

Larin was grabbing his back/hip 10 minutes in.. He should have been out then.

Jesse needs to put feelings aside and start the players that should be on the field Sunday.

I love that Marsch likes to try and play footy. I really do. The opposite is Steve Clarke or Gareth Southgate.. never ever try to play. Given the reduced midfield and questionable backline.. playing iso ball, 1 on 1 at the back was probably the wrong call. He got it wrong and didn't adjust.

Tourney will be unsuccessful unless we are playing a round of 16 game.

Have to consider Bomb/Luc Rollet pairing if we are going to play iso ball.

I am not quite sure who made the decision on Davies.. was it a commercial thing? He's in 40 commercials so we need to give the impression he can play. He clearly can't and won't.

Marsch, like Herdman gets too caught up on vibes and brotherhood. It cost them against Bosnia and again cost them today. Canada should have elected to play a 4-5-1 formation to start. Larin should have come out for a midfieder.

On Davies, I agree...I suspect they brought him out to drive up ticket sales too. A ton of hype around todays game was maybe seeing him in action. You could still see him walking around gingerly in warmups. I discounted a credible rumor based on vibes...but it looks like they were spot on.

4-5-1... yep.. Really should have tried that and countered.. Now we likely have Korea that will give us every bit as much as the Swiss did, in attack. Bomb and Luc it has to be.

There you have it.

Atmosphere was magical. One of the best pops I have ever been a part of when that David goal happened.

Watching the game back again later, it's hard to take it all in from high up behind the net.

Initial thoughts:
  • Saliba was increible throughout the whole game. Really set the tempo in the first half and then had the incredible assist in the second. There were some moments where he kind of sprayed the ball around randomly - hopefully that cleans up as he gains confidence.
  • Larin was off it today. That break away was brutal.
  • AJ is such a consistent rock on the back line.
  • LDF and Corn struggled at times with Embolo. First time they really came up against a player of his quality this tournament.
  • I think Marsh did fine today. My main gripe was we were pretty passive in our structure off the ball - especially in the first half. We really didn't press much at all until the 2-0 game state stated coming into play

Oh last thought...

Both goals were major let downs and were avoidable. The second is complete nightmare fuel if you are Crepeau...Can't happen in big games. DSC is the better shot stopper IMO and i do wonder if this game is 1-1 with him between the pipes.

Honestly, I’d place South Korea at Canada’s level. They also have similar problems with scoring. Bizarre decision to put this R16 match in LA from the very beginning.

Not much to say about this game against the Swiss. They struggled to get going on the ball and the entire back 4 + Crepeau were all out of sorts. I think you have to consider a midfield 3 for the next match just play it a bit safer.

This should have been 1-1 but I have no faith Dayne makes the first half save on Embolo that Crepeau did.

But crappy goals are our calling card.

F
It's do or die Sunday. Tough decisions are going to need to be made.

We need the best (in form) starting 11. Feelings be damned.
Feelings be damned. Look at South Africa out here. Broos didn't give two shits for feelings or pedigree. Might be easier when you are a journeyman coach but still.. they could win this and face us yet.
