Yeah, the truth can be inconvenient at times.

This line of argument reminds me of the Ben Johnson apologists.

"See! Everyone in the race ended up getting caught for cheating!"

Yes, including our guy, Ben Johnson, who was also a cheater.

Westhead is simply telling the story, nothing more.

It's also a bigger issue then NZ, it's been reported it's been going on for years. What would you suggest a guy like Rick does? Sit on the info and not report it?

Sid sure, his takes are usually just for clicks.

This:

What’s the story being told here? These reporters, with limited knowledge of soccer, are writing sensationalist articles and tweets trying to score brownie points with the soccer community while feigning a dedication to integrity in sports. It’s shoddy reporting

What’s sensationalist here?

We broke the rules and got caught, and guess what, we’ve been doing it for awhile.

What are the scenarios for advancing in the third game now?

Edit - seems like all that has to happen is we beat Colombia and France doesn’t lose to NZ by an absurd amount.

Since goal differential is the tie-breaker, there's a crazy chance Canada could still win the group:

If Canada beats Colombia and NZ beats France, all 4 teams finish with 3 points but Canada would have the best goal differential.

In theory yes but NZ would also have to not beat France by an absurd amount.

They win and they advance. They draw or lose and they don't.
What’s the second tiebreaker after GD?

Years of systematically using drones to spy on other teams? What's sensational about that, it's literally what happened. No reputable source is making anything up or adding to the story to make it more dramatic.

Comparing it to what Ben Johnson did is not overdramatic in the slightest? This isn’t even the most controversial thing to happen in Olympic soccer this week but the members of the Canadian media are determined to make sure the players and fans suffer the consequences.

The government of Canada didn’t suspend their funding of Hockey Canada this fast despite the multiple instances of sexual misconduct coming to light.

The ranking of teams in the group stage will be determined as follows:
  1. Points obtained in all group matches (three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat);
  2. Goal difference in all group matches;
  3. Number of goals scored in all group matches;
  4. Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
  5. Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question;
  6. Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
  7. Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction could be applied to a player in a single match):
    • Yellow card: −1 point;
    • Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
    • Direct red card: −4 points;
    • Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;
  8. Drawing of lots.

Seems like there could be a rare scenario where we win but still don’t advance I think. But I think it’s unlikely.

How is the Government of Canada suspending funding Rick Westhead’s fault?

You’re finding a lot of creative ways to denigrate everyone aside from the actual cheaters.

Ben Johnson’s infraction was far more severe and unsurprisingly so was his punishment.

No. If Canada wins they finish ahead of Colombia based on goal differential and also ahead of the loser of the NZ/France match.

A win means Canada finishes either first or second in their pool and advances to the next round.

No. Canada has a higher GD than Columbia right now, which means if we win we at worst finish 2nd.

Isn’t it possible for Canada to beat Colombia by 1 goal only and for NZ to beat France by an absurd amount?
