If he had the chance to go back in time, I hope Herdman wouldn’t change a damn thing about what he said.
I hope Herdman learns from this and works towards understanding how his teams may have "outhustled" their opposition so far, but they were picked a part by experienced veteran teams that know how to keep their emotions in check until its time to play.

This world cup is objectively a success for us. We now have a goal in the WC. Hoping we can get our first ever win and may this be the start of Canada being regulars at the WC, especially as North American representatives.

Teams???? Lets not get carried away here. The Canadians lost to the Belgians due to their lack of finishing. Nothing else.

I think there are lessons for him to take away. I don’t think he is naive to a point where he thought they were actually going to “****” Croatia or any team at this stage. To me at least the comments served a purpose.

It’s a monumental step for Canadian soccer. I too hope that one day it’s an event that Canadians can look forward to every four years. Maybe occasionally upsetting nations like Belgium or Croatia. This years tournament wasn’t about that for me at least.

Yeah but why give them a reason to destroy you?
It’s 1 of 3 group stage games at the World Cup. Not 1 of 82 games in a NHL season. They had more than enough reasons to go out and give it to an inferior team after a 0-0 draw to Morocco.

The Herdman slander is completely out of touch. He has changed soccer in this country. Not only on the men’s side.

Canada was clearly the underdog. No point in dissing their mothers. A better strategy would be saying "it's not going to get easier against Croatia but we know we deserve to be here and are going to try our best to beat them". Instead "were going to f*** em". Act like an underdog gives your team a chance to come out and have no pressure. Instead the coach put all the pressure on Canada to come out and beat them.

Would team Latvia ever come out and say we are going to destroy Canada at the Olympics? What do you think Canada would do if that were to happen? 15-0?

Given the discourse after the Belgium game, I would say he took the pressure off some individuals with those comments. I personally don’t think it really mattered what he said, Croatia was going to be Croatia.

Playing the underdog card has never been Herdman’s approach and it’s changed the mentality of that group for the better. They didn’t go to Estadio Azteca and go toe to toe with Mexico thinking they were the underdog. It’s not how they took points away from home against USA and Mexico, it’s not how they beat those teams in Canada. And it’s not how they finished top of the table in qualifying. They go on the pitch with the mentality that they are a threat that should be feared.

Its hard to believe that Croatia played extra motivated because of some comments. I think they had already worked to peak motivation for all these games. I would also think this is more about Herdman not wanting his players star struck against an elite team but to go in with an attack mentality. Seemed it worked early too, they were inspired. I cant find any fault with that related to the actual game. Press clippings afterwards? Meh.

Other than the experience gained in this World Cup, I think it's important to get more Canadian players playing in better leagues. The Canadian National team has little to no chance to play against the best countries, so having Canadian players play on Euro teams is basically the only way to get top level experience.

All the players on the Canadian National team are playing in top leagues whether it's in Europe or MLS, what we need is more players playing in them. The CPL is only 4 years old and most of those players are teenagers or in their early 20's, a number have already been transferred to European clubs, 4 years time our younger players already on Team Canada will be more experienced and presumably more players will have joined the National team. Also we had a 39 year old and a 35 year old in the starting lineup today, they will be both gone by the next World Cup.
This World Cup was a stepping stone, the next one we will be on a higher step.

Silly to think a team would not be motivated for a World Cup match.
That's not the point. All teams want to win. Being motivating to win because of being insulted is a different thing all together.

It was a rookie mistake on a global stage.

Meh, I don't think that was the reason they destroyed us. They are just a class level above Canada. I have zero problems with what Hurdman said. I think "blackboard material" is overrated. Even without it, the result would have been similar.

We out hustled Belgium but we didn't have that many high danger chances against Belgium. Belgium has one of the best keepers in the world and could afford to give up loads of shots. Its not like they planned it, but its a strategy they used (relying on Courtois to do his thing) until they found openings which they exploited.

If Herdman was trying to take pressure off the players, I think there could've been better ways to do it but we might have to agree to disagree there.

I thought we could make the round of 16, but at this point I just want a few more goals and have the team gainn experience. Davies might not be in his prime the next world cup, but I hope this is a start of many consecutive world cup appearances.

Sorry, what???

Canada had 14 shots in the first half. That's the most shots any team has put in a half without scoring since 2006.

This is not hockey. You can't just rely on your goalkeeper to keep you in games, and "force shots to the outside" like is common in hockey. Heck, Canada even had a penalty shot because of Belgium's inability to stop Canada from attacking their 18 yard box.

Canada lost that game because they failed to finish. It had nothing to do with Belgium shutting Canada down.

Yeah, but that's not why they lost.

Croatia is just quality. Their passing carved Canada to pieces. Nothing to be ashamed of. Still amazing from Canada.
Well, I think the coach made massive tactical errors that didn’t make any sense. Atiba played way too much and was toast after the first goal, never mind the 3rd. The other fatal flaw was not reacting to the middle of the pitch, as Canada had Atiba and Eustaquio outnumbered by three Center mids

Let’s not forget that Canada should have been given another Penalty, when a Belgium back pass was ruled “offside” when Canada gained possession

Watching the Pre Game show today, on FOX, and they made a big deal over everyone on the planet calling it Football, and the USA calling it soccer…. And were claiming ”it’s called soccer”.

American foot is 95% plus played with your hands, and occasionally played with your foot…… whereas Football is played 95% plus played with your feet…..

it’s just simple logic that Football is correct.

If Canada can come out and show well against Morocco and win, this will be a successful tournament. Building towards the next WC on home soil, that will be a big one.

As for this year. I have it on good authority that this time, it is in fact, coming home.

Go England.
