"If Canada is to successfully defend the Gold medal it will be on the shoulders of the 19 year olds, Comtois, Glass, Vilardi, Frost, Thomas, Tibbett, Suzuki, Formenten etc. or whatever collection of those players on the team and not in the NHL."
Lafreniere is better than Formenton and even when including Formenton on the squad he would still have a good chance of making the squad regardless. Lafreniere is much better than Connor Dewar as well.
"I do give him credit for leading Team Canada in scoring at the U18 tournament as an underager. Remind me again what color medal Canada came home with from that tournament. So, he wasn't able to deliver the goods (winning) at a tournament in which he was an underager, but somehow you think he'll be the difference maker at a tournament in which he'll be a double underager. And that was a decent team that should have at least made a 1/2 final. That team underperformed."
So it's all because of Lafreniere that the team didn't medal? Because it sounds like thats what youre saying. It's ridiculous pinning the quarterfinal exit on a single player, if you watched the game you wouldve seen that the whole team didnt bother showing up until the 3rd period and by then it was already too late. That loss was on the whole team, not on him solely. Also he scored a goal in 4 of Canada's 5 tournament games, seems like he was a difference maker to me, had the team gone farther I'm sure he would've posted more goals and points. He's shown that he's perfectly capable of playing against older competition. Of course if he was to play in the World Juniors next year I don't expect him to be a tournament points leader, but he would be more than capable of playing up to the competition and holding his own.
