It's pretty obvious that Hockey Canada does care about whether a player is draft eligible. It's been used as a black mark for players when it comes to usage and even McKenzie claims it, and no one seems to know more about what Hockey Canada is thinking. It's very stupid to separate 18 year olds with the same number of years playing major junior into drafted and undrafted groupings, but that's what I expect.

LOL!!!!

He's the best forwards in the entire CHL right now.....

Mitch Brown @MitchLBrown

Some way too early CHL tracking project observations 75 games in:

Nick Suzuki (MTL) leads in just about everything.

Shots/60? Yes.
Shot Assists/60? Of course.
Entries/60? Obviously.
Scoring Chances/60? Those too.
Scoring Chance Assists/60? You bet.

Hilarious that he has Entwhistle in over Suzuki.

Everything but goals (#25 in the OHL) or points (#24 in the OHL).

So McDavid is not the best NHL player since he's not 1st in pts and goals? Got it
I'll ignore that argument if you don't mind. If you want to crown him the best player in the CHL, he needs to outplay guys like Glass, Lafrenière or Frost and right now, he isn't. Hell, he might not even be the best hockey player in his family!

Now look, I think that Suzuki s a top-5 player in the OHL and that he will be on team Canada at the WJC but I don't see how being #1 for shots/60 means anything if you can't score or create a good scoring chance for your teammates.

Bouchard is going to stick in Edmonton, isn’t he?

I have a feeling the defense is not going to be elite for once.

I would say yes, he stays in Edmonton. And congrats to him on netting his 1st. pro goal. Even if he's playing limited minutes and in and out of the pressbox, Edmonton is often reluctant to loan such players out to their national teams for tournaments. So, scratch Bouchard off the list. 2 18 year olds Smith/Dobson will have to carry the mail this year.

I notice Comtois was a scratch last night. I wasn't following, injury or healthy scratch?

It’s looking more and more like Bouchard is a permanent Oiler. Their team needs exactly what he brings.

That leaves three defencemen who are capable of elite, top pairing play in Noah Dobson, PO Joseph and Ty Smith. All three are first round picks, with Joseph being the only 19 year old, draft+2 player.

All the other D I would be uncomfortable with on the top pairing, meaning this could be a year where the team has a great deep forward core with a good but not great defence for the WJC.

Not entirely sold on PO Joseph being a capable of elite, top pairing play... I think he can play and be very good but I don’t think he’s got the skills to be an elite guy on this team.

I’m not guaranteeing he would be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s doing well on the top pairing in December. He is (at least on paper) one of the three best D on the current Canadian roster and has the ability to elevate his game. Everyone else not named Dobson, Joseph, or Smith, I’m less sure about.

like another poster wrote, I don't have much confidence in Joseph to be the Guy on this team. Perhaps Edmonton's connections to Hockey Canada frees up Bouchard for us. unlikely, but there's a slim chance we get him on loan. If not, I'll cross my fingers and hope Joseph plays above his paygrade for 7 games at Christmas.

I think Dach and Cozens are in the mix at this point, I would play any of them over guys like Veleno or Dolan... Also, Brook is a lock to be an important piece of this team...

I would too, especially JA Dolan. but,

It isn't a question of what you or I would do, it's what Hockey Canada will do/and what Hockey Canada has traditionally done. It's not often they stock the U20 team with a duo of 17 year olds. usually they don't give them significant roles and usually the team finishes out of the medals. Think Ufa 2013 and Malmo 2014.

I'm not convinced Lafreniere makes it. That would be Hockey Canada's bigger mistake.

a line of Lafreniere Dach Cozens would be a special treat this year for the Vancouver tournament, and an epic monster line going to Europe the following year. But, we'll probably lose 1 or both (Dach/Cozens) to the NHL next year. So, it may be a while before we see that trio of '01s together.

I suspect that a big advantage for Lafreniere over Dach or cozens is that the team should be most shallow on the left side among the forward spots. Obviously there are plenty of centres but there are also a lot of RW options, in my eyes anyway. I think that it is pretty open for Lafreniere in his preferred LW spot.

Watching hockey in the east, I really don't like the idea of Joseph being oversold here. I suspect that he could be a good complementary player on a pairing, but I would not expect him to be one of the top defencemen on his own. Smith and Dobson are needed to take the reins.

any updates?

a week or so ago there was speculation that all or most jr. age NHLers would be returned to their junior clubs.

As far as I can tell none look like they'll be returned. Comtois, Vilardi (IR) Rasmussen, Formenton, Thomas, Bouchard.

We may get 1 or 2 on loan on December 12, but that's about it.

Comtois would be highly unlikely, and Vilardi hasn't played a game yet this year and is out until the end of November. Any updates on his status? I think for now I'd take a pass on him. So, we are left with either 1 or 2 of what's left. My hope would be for Thomas and Bouchard.

Detroit is keeping Rasmussen beyond his ninth game. Being sent down for the wjc probably shouldn't be completely ruled out though. Don't know about Thomas or Bouchard, each is playing limited minutes. I will be very surprised if Formenton isn't sent down though.

Wings will let him play.

If I was to assemble the team right now using the summer showcase roster itd look like this:

Forwards:
Michael Rasmussen
Maxime Comtois
Alex Formenton
Stelio Mattheos
Robert Thomas
Barrett Hayton
Ty Dellandrea
Morgan Frost
Owen Tippett
Gabe Vilardi
Nick Suzuki
Cody Glass
Joe Veleno

Defensemen:
Jacob Bernard-Docker
Pierre-Olivier Joseph
Evan Bouchard
Jared McIsaac
Noah Dobson
Ian Mitchell
Ty Smith

Goaltenders:
Michael DiPietro
Olivier Rodrigue

I see where Stelio Mattheos is making some noise in Brandon.
His name should start being bantered around more and the timing is right for a good showing in the canada/ russia series coming up.
