Ok. Where would you rank him based on his play last year?

I love Pavs potential, but he's by the very definition of the term an average starting goalie.

With how poor our defensive play was last year I would of ranked him between 11-13 last season in #1 goalies. Which is above average at 24 years old.

Not going to panic. It's just game 1. The lack of offense and offensive attack is concerning though. We're starting this season how we ended the last one, struggling.

25 yo is normal peak for goaltending

defensive play was poor, but wasn't as below average as Pav's sv% was... there were many goalies on worse teams, with worse defense, with worse giveaways and better sv%

Whats about Tim Thomes? he Peaked at 30+ years old. Is it always stats with you? Can you ever share an opinion from what you see not whats the stats tell you?

Id agree with those who say pavelec is a average goalie at this point. Sure he make some amazing saves but he is just so inconsistent

I did say normal didn't I? Not everyone.

It just means that it's normal???

Usually, typical, whatever...

Not everything is stats... but this is a good example where you don't want to put your hope and faith for Pavelec to be an exception like Thomas

We're in a lot of trouble if pavalec is an average goaltender. I hope he's a young star in the making but I can't help but feel like he's going to be a middle of the road keeper or mediocre. Which pains me to say.

What about Schnieder or Rask? They are both 25 would you say they have peaked?

What? Are you sure bout that?

And until we get our defense figured out, I think we need to be a little easy on Pavs. We can't have 2 out of 3 pairings playing bad. Yeah that Turris goal was weak. Not sure what happened there.

Hopefully tonight was mostly rust for a lot of guys and we get things together within a week or so. I'm not as worried about how the team does immediately as in past years because it's such a relief to know that management actually has some kind of plan and idea of how they want to build the team and organization going forward.

I do believe that Pavs would be much better and shakey if we had:
Enstrom-Byfuglien
Hainsey-Bogosian
as our top four... Again I don't think the fault falls directly or entirely on Pavelec... I do think he's *currently* a below-average goalie but has the tools so if taught better positioning could become far past average and even become the exception to where goalies peak

This is one game so I won't panic. Having said that I was dissapointed with how bad Wheeler looked. I thought he wouldve had an edge playing well in Europe and I thought he was the worst player in the top six today. He skated so well in camp last Sunday and I thought he was sluggish today. Slater also looked pretty rusty.
As for the D, Id like to see Redmond play, mainly cause I havn't seen him play too much and am curious what he brings to the table in the NHL.

I actually thought Jokinen was pretty good tonight. No chemistry between he and Kane but give it time.

Little created quite a bit as well, but Wheeler and Ladd were nonexistent.

Pavelec may have not been 'bad' but Anderson showed several times how a good starting goalie can help a team through rough patches in the game to get the ship righted. It's not like the Sens D was great tonight either, but the difference was Anderson bailed them out, Pavelec did not.

The guys looked gassed. I am hoping to see vast improvement from this team.

I thought Wheeler looked bad and did next to nothing. At least Ladd got a great chance in front. As much hell as Kane is given for his passing, Wheeler does his best to try and one-up him sometimes. Can't understand why he does blind passes to no one.

Postma really needs to improve his defensive game. He's almost a completely different player once he crosses the red line. His positioning can be terrible.

Kane is out of shape. I noticed he was leaning on his knees at every break of play during the third. That being said he did have good hustle to break up a 2 on 1 at one point, I think in the third.

Jokinen is in great shape, and has incredible drive. This guy is going to be a treat. He was playing certain situations correctly that other Jets have a problem playing correctly. Going down the middle of the ice with two or three defenders in front, he would cross the line then pass to a wing. Too many of our C either hold the puck or try to dump it past the 2-3 guys making a giveaway. The problem is his timing, he plays his game a little different, but it's the other players that need to match his play. Also passing to Kane is a bad idea in that situation, he's just going to try to go through the 2-3 defenders. The correct play is to hold on to it drawing the defenders over, or ring it around the boards.

Burmi has improved his game, he now drives towards the net. He's going to have a good year.

Our D needs to improve behind the 1st line. Too many guys out of position, losing battles that they shouldn't, and just general sloppiness.

To me its seems like some Jets fans want Pavs to fail.

If you went through my post history you would see that I have never been critical of Pavalec.

Tonight he got completely outplayed by a goalie that hadn't played a game in 8 months.

 Knew you'd have a chart. I don't think criticism is unwarranted. People have high expectations of him. But this poor guy has never had an adequate defense in front of him unfortunately. If Hainsey and Stuart can play like they should we'd be decent and then adding Bogosian would help too. But this team has to get to a point to where we can actually get by with one of our top 3 guys out. It might just take time with youngsters developing but it has to happen if this team will EVER do anything remotely notable.
