Post-Game Talk: Can we leave Stu in a California Closet?

The nice thing I guess is I haven't been nearly as emotionally invested in the playoffs thus far. Kind of knew this would happen if we started with Skinner.

And I'm with you. From positioning, reading the play, athleticism, playing the puck, reaction time, lateral movement, rebound control... Like pick any of the categories of the position and it's hard to argue he isn't below average.

It's honestly hard to understand why he's even here.
I wasn't sure if the Kings coaching staff had a handle on how to exploit the tendencies because they sure didn't last playoffs. But with more time to prepare and a different team and a coaching having TC they're playing differently, and they play us better now. Game 2 Kings did a better mop up job than game 1.

I sensed it too. said after two periods I'm more worried being down 3-1 in this game than I was team being down 4-1 in game one. In that game one sensed Kings were tired and in trouble. They played a more paced game tonight.

Oilers are handing the Kings confidence and the Shooter Stewter Tutor in net...

Ya I agree, and the end of the day its only one aspect of a bigger collective of problems happening. Defense was bad, special teams was bad.

That's going to expose average to below average goalies....
100%

This team looks broken to me.

THIS

Another huge issue

It's like not putting your toddler in a timeout. Make them learnt hat what they are doing is not acceptable. This coach has given Bouch free reign. He does not hold anybody accountable on this roster.

Well unless it's Jeff Skinner.

Bouchard could literally pull down his pants and take a shit on the ice and not miss a shift.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's just something his sports psychologist told him to do. Smile when you have negative thoughts or feel overwhelmed. I honestly feel sorry for Stu here and I wish him well on a fresh start with a new franchise. It was time to move on from him in November when he was actively costing us games.

He should never dress in an Oiler jersey again, not just for the sake of our team's success, but also for his mental health. I have a feeling he won't be very long for this league.
It’s probably a defence mechanism tbh. Laugh at a funeral type of thing.

I'm not exactly mad - honestly I feel kind of indifferent at this point.

I've been banging the drum and citing the stats that say Skinner is decidedly shit for over two years my guy.

He's currently 16th, last, in the playoffs in GAA, goals saved above expected, and save percentage.

Not really surprising either because he was ranked 67th, 65th, and 57th in those three metrics during the regular season.

If you're a 1B you'd expect all those numbers to be in the 20s. Statistically he's a 3A - most teams have two guys that are better. The exception was Colorado and they went out and got Blackwood.
They got TWO goalies lol. Wedgwood as well.

Then we have Bowman saying he is happy with our goaltending......

Its really bad advice if it was. you can't be displaying that in team sports. Especially in hockey. Quickest way to end an NHL career is to offer a disposition that you just don't care, it doesn't bother you. Like I said the dope can't read the room. I'm sure the Oilers bench were livid when he started chuckling and figuring it was funny. Ask yourself if you can even have that disposition on a team possessing a McDavid, or a Drai, or a Messier. Mess would've kicked his ass by now.

You have more patience than I do.

Nuge - Mcdavid - Hyman
Kane - Draisaitl - Savoie
Janmark - Henrique - Brown
Frederic - Ryan - Arvidsson

I'm just trying to duplicate last year honestly. No idea what to do...

The ridiculous thing on here is the some posters actually believe that a different goale is going to make this team better on defence, better at creating offence, better with giving up passing lanes on the PK, better on the PP and have better discipline.

This team is losing in EVERY aspect of the game and goaltending isnt going to save that.

A new goalie might mask some of the other elements that this team is failing at but the reality is that this team is getting its ass handed to them in every way possible.

LA is vastly superior so far.
I don't think anybody believes a much better goalie will automatically make all of that better, but there are other nuances.

A goalie who plays solid can boost everybody's confidence. Do you think players play the exact same way when they see every other shot go in? Yes, some are atrocious defensive breakdowns too. It's not just black and white.

Both can be true. They need a MUCH better goalie, but they also need to play MUCH MUCH better in front of him.

Skinner has been thrust into a role that he was never ready for based on the mismanagement of Ken Holland, who failed to acquire a true starting goalie every year he was GM. His answer for the Oilers was Jack Campbell, enough said. Management, for whatever reason, has hitched their saddle to the Skinner train and has doubled and tripled down at every opportunity. Choosing to platoon him and a career AHL'er in Pickard for a team with cup hopes was truly asinine.

I sympathize with Skinner for this reason, he shouldn't have been billed as the starter from early on. He essentially had to pick up the pieces after Jack Campbell had a meltdown and couldn't make a save.

That being said, he has clearly regressed every year he's been here, whether due to Schwartz or whatever other reason, and clearly the team has given up on him.

Time for management to move on. There was a player to salvage in there at one point for the Oilers, however that would have required a modicum of intuition and forethought to bring in a coach to mentor Skinner; such a level of cognition the Oilers do not have.

If I was a coach, I bag skate the shit out of him for a couple hours just for that
I love piling on the guy. It was a terrible look.

I think he was sooo angry when that happened, he just smiled at it. It was a bad reaction to it. I don't actually think the guy was having fun. It was more like a pyscho smile lol

Yeah I think so too. His career as an Oiler is probably done, in spectacular meltdown fashion at that. Maybe he can pull a Dubnyk and figure his shit out somewhere else (might want to start by losing some weight, when you're already slow to begin with, you can't be one of the heaviest goalies in the league). Don't see too many games where a crowd gives it to a goalie that bad.

Yeah.

Idk.

One thing I'll say is with this team, I still think there is some sliver of hope. They seem to generally thrive with their backs against the wall. And no matter what you want to say - this group doesn't quit

But that's contingent on Pickard getting the reigns and having a really solid outing in game 3.

Nuge absolutely stinks
Nuge has to be the most overrated player in franchise history. The guy has made a career out of being invisible. Just a ghost out there most nights and always has been.

The worst thing about it all is watching McDrai go through this. Two of the greatest warriors the league has ever seen seemingly wasting the prime of their careers. This series isn’t over and even if it is, there’s still time. But not as much as there used to be.

Watch other clubs play. They don't end up having a goalie giving up 6 goals every night in playoffs no matter what.

Dallas Colorado series. Try watching that one to see what goalies even do. No way there should be 6GA in game one and the team battle through that ridiculous goaltending only to have their starter let in a shot going 5miles an hour for the winner. What kind of gutpunch you think that is? McD could tell you.

McD was shaking his head at the goaltending tonight. It was either the 2nd or 3rd Kings goal and McD on bench just shaking his head. I sense why.

I hate the loss but when you lose with ZERO fight or bitterness or competitive angst that is just disgusting.

If your going to lose, don't be a bunch of passifists.... Let LA know what awaits them next game at least.
It looked like a standard loss in gamen20nof the regular season .... What the hell??!!

Show some fire at least...
It's nice to win and make pretty plays and all but you have to absolutely show that you HATE to lose as well.
We don’t have the roster makeup to show any fire. We’ve been talking about the lack of physicality in the lineup since the first week of the season. There aren’t 3 players on the roster to form an energy line to go out there for a shift, throw hits and recapture momentum. Not having that is a problem. Kane and Frederic theoretically were supposed to provide that but they can’t right now. Frederic can barely skate and Kane starts the game off with a cross checking penalty instead of throwing a body check. Poorly constructed roster isn’t good enough.

Anyone who isn’t an Oiler fan or media knows Skinner is a terrible goalie.

LA fans know Skinner is trash. 18,000 of them chanting “WE WANT SKINNER!” like he was the prize in a Happy Meal. Even HF trolls know Skinner’s a terrible goalie — they just expose themselves when they pretend the Oilers’ biggest problem isn’t the guy letting in muffin after muffin.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the home crowd chanted “We want a goalie!” after one of Skinner’s inavoidable upcoming Uh Ohs? A man can dream lol.

They have been atrocious defensively, and Skinner hasn't made any saves when needed. These two things are not mutually exclusive here.

Unfortunately these are the best years in the long contract. While he's still relatively close to prime. We're going to be watching this guy when he's older doing even less.
