People bag on Kevin Pillar hard for not walking and Revere is almost worse than him. Not in raw BB rate, but Revere is the worst guy on the team in terms of how much of his OBP is made up of batting average. He's also the worst guy on the team in terms of racking up extra bases (both as a % of total hits and a % of total PAs), which is kind of depressing for a guy who makes as much contact as him and has his speed.
He really isn't though. Granted the Jays don't steal much as a team, because why would you risk an out when this offence can probably cash you in just fine without the extra 90 feet, but for as often as he reaches base, and as often as he only gets as far as 1st when he reaches (working under the assumption that 2nd base is both the easiest base to steal, relatively speaking, and the base that generates the most steal attempts on it), he attempts to steal far less often than any of the other guys on the team who could be considered threats to do so.
Look, Revere has been good for the team so far. And he has a skill that he does really really well (making contact). But as has been said there's more to being a hitter than just making contact and getting singles. You want a guy to be able to take an extra base with some degree of regularity. You want a guy who can take a walk (demonstrating good zone awareness and providing some protection against slumps or strings of bad luck on balls in play), you want a guy that is more than one-dimensional. He's average at best overall as a hitter when you factor in all the components of what comprises "hitting" (which ironically includes a few things that don't involve actually hitting the ball with the bat). He has speed that he doesn't use on the basepaths as much as you would expect for someone who has that weapon in his arsenal. His defence is average-to-below-average. He has one of the worst arms in the major leagues. He is quite possibly the most one-dimensional player on this team in terms of what he brings to the table. And $7m is a lot of money to pay a one-dimensional guy when you can probably put that money to better use elsewhere on the roster, especially given that in spite of what people think about Rogers' money vault and the capless world of baseball economics, there will be a budget for the Blue Jays to adhere to.
And for the record, nobody "hates" Ben Revere. What he does well he does really well. But he is sort of like the bizarro mirror twin of a guy like Rasmus or Arencibia: his stat line looks good if you view it in a very specific, narrow way keyed to that narrow niche he fills. And kinda mediocre or bad if you look in any other way. Were he to come back at less than the $6.6-$7m projected price tag he could be a useful piece. But there are going to be some other more pressing holes to fill on this roster come winter, and a $7m slap-hitting, all-singles, no-walks, noodle-armed LF is probably not a wise investment in that light.
