Is there any chance that Ovi can age as good as legendary wings like Teemu Selanne & Jaromir Jagr?

I'd say he is aging as well as them. Maybe he doesn't maintain himself quite to their levels, but he's a freak of nature. I could see the guy put up 40+ goals at age 40.

No, but it won't have anything to do with Ovechkin's work ethic.

Both Selanne and Jagr benefitted immensely from the time off in the 2005 lockout. Ovechkin doesn't have a comparable.

Jagr rejuvenated himself in the KHL. That simply isn't a political option for Ovechkin now.

Both missed far more time than Ovechkin at the same age so had less normal wear and tear.

Selanne benefited post lockout by playing on a strong team where he wasn't expected to be the number one guy. He got the powerplay time without the hard minutes. Ovechkin is still the Caps number one player so he won't get the easy minutes of a Selanne 2009.

Jagr post KHL bounced around teams. He usually got sheltered minutes and powerplay time.

Ovechkin is really in the 1% of the 1% in terms of elite players who haven't missed time for injuries. He will likely play well into his early 40s, but I think he calls it an NHL career at the end of the season he breaks the goal record.

If he lacked discipline and professionalism, there’s no way he would’ve scored 50 goals and 90 points at the age of 36.

I think he can not only be as good as Selanne or Jagr, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was even better than them. Dude defies logic and has proved doubters wrong every single time.

No, but not because he lacks professionalism. Jagr and Selanne see the ice better so that part of their games were still there when the skating and goal scoring diminished.

30 goal seasons after age 30
OV: 6x
Jagr: 4x
Selanne: 4x

40 goal seasons after age 30
OV: 5x
Jagr: 1x

Jagr: 1x
Selanne: 0x

PPG seasons after age 30
OV: 3x
Jagr: 3x
Selanne: 3x

OV has already aged way better than both. After age 37 (OV's current age), Selanne had 1 30 goal season and 1 PPG season while Jagr had zero. I'm confident OV will do better.

Glad you posted this because I was thinking, surely he has to be on track to be the best-aging player ever. I think people really have not yet grasped just how superhuman his 30s have been.

Ovechkin has definitely aged better so far, but we will have to wait and see if he can match Selänne's PPG season as a 40 year old.

Ovechkin is still playing like he's on his last legs even if his stats were good last year. I don't think he can escape the inevitable for seven more years.

Yeah, I was telling myself that he was a significantly better player past 30 than they were. I guess we'll see how it looks like past 40 as Selanne and Jagr remained pretty good into their early 40's.

Selanne won Olympics MVP when he was almost 44 years old, Jagr played in NHL until he was 46

It'll be very interesting how he stacks up to Howe, Lidstrom, Bourque when all is said and done. I think they're at the top with regards to top end seasons throughout their late 30s to 40 (and a bit beyond). All three have First Team honors at 40+. I'm sure I'm missing someone, but they're not coming to mind...

This is almost certainly true, and he has pretty much said this more than a few times I believe. But if it does play out like that and he's still performing on the ice the way he has been lately I'll forever wonder what if he tried to chase 1000 career goals. I honestly think if he wants to play in the NHL long enough he would get 1000, even if he had to play to 45 or something like that, but I think it's in realistic reach if he wants to go for it.

It's entirely possible. It would be amazing to see Ovi potting 30+ goals a year into his forties. It's not just about dedication, though; guys like Selanne and (especially) Jagr are absolute genetic freaks. Ovi hasn't slowed down much to this point, but remaining effective for as long as Jagr did is a tall order.

He's also said he wants to play in the KHL for a few years after he's done in the NHL ala Datsyuk.

He just set the record for most goals scored by a 36 year old in a season, hes massive and hes had an extremely healthy career. I dont forsee him falling off a cliff anytime soon.
Also why are the options garbage?

yep another reason I don't see any chance he goes for 1000, I really wish he would. That would be one of the greatest all time sports records if he hit 1000 career goals. Just breaking Gretzky's record is incredibly impressive but 1000 man that would be crazy.

I mean what is “effective”. Ovi could hammer from his spot on the PP and float around at even strength until he is 50. Would just have to be on a team that wasn’t very good and was fine with the story being about Ovi’s unbreakable goal scoring record….which is where the Caps are headed honestly.
