Can Jack Hughes become the second best player behind Connor McDavid?

That's ridiculous.

He is not better than Matthews, Bedard, Draisitle, McKinnon or Pasternak. Speaking of golden boys, Pasternak was the golden boy before Hughs came along. Maybe its the hair.
Speaking of ridiculous... there is zero argument for Bedard being better than Hughes right now. That's one of the silliest things I've read.

He is borderline top 5 centres after this year. Not sure how 2nd is a convo

MacK
Drai
AM
Crosby/EP/Hughes/Bedard

Because it would take more than another elite season by him to surpass the guys I put above? Why is that hard to understand? I get you Jersey fanboys want to crown your young prince but have some patience. He is on a great track and I am a fan of his who has regularly on these forums said I see him as a top 5 player in this league in the future but he’s 22.

As someone who is not a New Jersey fan, am a Canadian, am a Ducks fan so never really liked the Devils much because of 2003 and has no reason at all to cheer for Hughes…… your post is about as hypocritical as it gets.

I’m not even here to argue where he places because who cares. I just came to offer my opinion that he’s unbelievable to watch. He got me watching the Devils constantly, a phrase I never thought I’d say. While there are plenty of arguments you could make for other players (easy ones too because there are a lot of great players) you lose credibility with an obvious bias against him.

Tier 1 ;
mcdavid

Tier 2;
Drai
Matthews
McKinnon
Hughes
Makar

This second Tier intertwines amongst each other. One or two guys seem to get a step ahead one year, then it's another one or 2 the next.
Kucherov in there too... Even though I really dislike the little shit.

Bedard is not generational.

It’s a term that’s applied too broadly.

Orr, Gretzky, Mario, McDavid, Crosby and Ovechkin are the only ones who meet that standard of being so far ahead of their peers upon entry in the league.

As predicted before the season, people are overreacting about a possible “slow” start by Bedard. Not at all unreasonable to write him off after a handful of games. People are still not watching him play it seems. What’s the excuse now that the games are readily available? Hell if I know.

You’re also misremembering the starts of some of these players. Crosby did start well with 18 points in his first 13 games before 5 goose eggs in 8 games pushed him down to 31 points through 31 games (was at 1.00 PPG through 33 games and at 1.10 PPG through 60 games ~ 66 points, before going on an absolute tear down the stretch, which was 5 months into the season).

Lemieux had 1 goal and 5 points in his first 6 games and 2 goals and 15 points through 13 games before taking off a month in. He scored a goal on his very first NHL shift, but we tend to forget that he didn’t score another until 3 weeks later.

Ovechkin had 13 points in 13 games and sat at 25 after 25 games. He of course started with an 8 game point streak and was fairly consistent throughout his stellar rookie campaign, but he was also 20.

Gretzky is Gretzky. Slow for him is 2 goals and 10 points in his opening 9 games. No one thinks Bedard is Gretzky.

McDavid had 1 point in his first 4 and 12 in his first 12 before getting knocked out halfway through game 13 for three months.

Bedard needs to be given more than 5 games and if you’ve been watching him play, you should be able to see where he’ll end up quite easily.

Why doesn't anyone take his two-way game into account? I mean, Draisaitl contantly get knocked for being bad defensively, MacKinnon got this false narrative around him that he's good defensively which is not backed up by any numbers, Matthews is being talked about by Toronto fans as an outsider for the Selke, but Hughes.. Who is actually by far the best of them defensively.. Nah, all about his production.

Even someone like Stamkos who wasn’t seen as being as ready as Bedard year 1 and had an under 50 point Rookie year, started to put it together in the last 1/3 with 16 goals and 24 points in his last 26 games. I think given his ability shown so far it’s just a matter of time before he starts figuring it out.

because Bedard is better than Jack

Bedard has done nothing in the NHL and you are saying he is better than an already proven star in Hughes?
How can anyone take you seriously when you make comments like that?

But for the sake of arguing, how exactly is he better than Jack?
He is certainly not a better skater or playmaker. He doesn't have a better shot or hockey IQ than Jack.
How is he better?

How do you get 2g and 2a in a 5-4 win and go -2?

Lackluster goaltending for your team, and amazing goaltending for the other team contributes

Devils doubled up the Isles on shots the first half and were still at 3-3 because their goalie couldn’t stop the isles from capitalizing on the chances they got, and the globetrotting Devils saw Sorokin make a few huge saves. The score could have been lopsided early

Yeah, Hughes has 10 points in 4 games, but is 2-6 in 5v5 play. Devils have 43% power play. Then again, Hughes PDO is .892.

It'll be interesting to see which way these stats develop. Something here is unsustainable.

I understand. When Hughes is on the ice for a goal against it is all his goalie's fault. He really shouldn't even get a minus.
