Can Jack Hughes become the second best player behind Connor McDavid?

Matthew Tkachuk was 6th with 2 more points than Hughes.

Hughes was 7th, tied with Skinner, Robertson, Pettersson

No idea what your source is, but it’s wrong. Tkachuk was in 5th with 74. Hughes, Robertson, and Petterson’s had 68. Skinner had 61 and was 15th.

5 5v5 points and 9 PPPs. Last year he was 6th in the league in 5v5 points

Your argument was 5on5 where Hughes was tied at 7th, now you're frauding 5on5 with ES stats. Read your own arguments.

You're also ignoring Rantanen with your new argument that also had 68 points and 8 more goals at ES. So that would make Hughes 7th at ES, tied at 6th.

The answer is yes, he might be 2nd already. He’s had the best start to the season of any player in the NHL and his team is absolutely stacked. He’s going to pick up points in bunches.

The answer is no. He is not better or more valuable than Matthews, Bedard or Mackinnon. He's in the Pasternak, Petterson range if that. Just because a player is in a hot steak doesn't mean he's the 2nd best behind Mcdavid. It usually means they are player of the month.

omg this guy is a MONSTER
He's certainly gunning to be the NHL's player of the month.

It’s not an argument. Literally just stating standings from NHL.com

Bedard? Okay budday

Petterson, Pasternak? At this point you're just showing your bias

For me he is Now...the second best player in the world.

I watched 4 of his games this season and he is so dominant out there...crazy

It is close between him, Draisatl and Mackinnon right now....but no way that Matthews is as good than Hughes..

Hughes just turned 22...so he will be the second best player in the world for a while

Jason Robertson was the ̶s̶e̶c̶o̶n̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶l̶d̶, player of the month in November 2022.

The 2nd best player in the league is Makar

Doesn't change that you were falsely using ES stats as 5on5, then wiping Rantanen out of existence

For reference, one year ago today, there was a 4 way tie for first in scoring, all with 12 points in 7 games. McDavid had 10 in 6.

Hughes is up on McDavid by 9 points with just 1 more game played (same amount of team games). Quite a lead already.

I’d still take MacKinnon personally. I’ve seen him win, and contribute in a number of ways to said winning - that matters more than just counting stats.

No insult to Jack though really - he’s becoming like McDavid, in that it’s terrifying when he’s winding up through the neutral zone. And at 22, he’s still not done improving.

17 points in 6 games and just +1?

Yes, which is tied for 2nd on the team...one goal behind the leader, which is Luke Hughes at +2.

+/- is a somewhat useful, though very flawed stat that is best used when comparing players on the same team.

Good for Quinn Hughes for being tied for the league lead at +8 though.

Jason Robertson beat McDavid for player of the month in November 2022 too. I don't recall Robertson fans declaring him better than Matthews or Mackinnon

Robertson was (at the time) a 23yr old former 2nd round pick coming off a 79 point season.
Hughes is a 22yr old former 1st overall pick coming off a 99pt season.

It's really not difficult to see why people have more confidence in Hughes than they did Robertson at the time.

I am not saying Robertson is bad or that Hughs is bad. I am saying good players get on streaks. And that doesn't mean you have to start saying they are better than everyone but Mcdavid.

But as I said before, its the golden boy treatment. The same thing happened with Pasternak. Good player and his stock did rise. It just went a little too high and has settled down a bit

It is the eye test.

Watch Hughes play in the offensive zone and you will see.that no player control the play like.him except Mcdavid.

His lateral mouvements are insane and his so quick and smart.with the puck

99 points last season at 21 years old and he is.a lot more.dominant right now.

Laugh like you want.but for me he is the second best player.

I take Hughes over a guy like Matthews in a heartbeat.

My opinion

I need to see Hughes continue to dominate at (or near) this level for longer than just a few games before I personally have him in my "2nd to McDavid" tier. So I agree with you on that for sure.

That said - he was already on my shortlist of players that could challenge for that spot with a good enough season. For example, even though Huberdeau and Gaudreau tied for 2nd in points 2yrs ago - no one ever really considered them 2nd best. If Hughes finished 2nd in points this year, I do think many will consider him to be the 2nd best player going in to next season. Some of it has to do with his pedigree, and the potential people associate with draft rank.
