With the Oilers signing Mikko Koskinen to a new contract at 4.5 M, I can't see them keeping Talbot. The Oilers can retain on his salary.

He's a UFA and one who is struggling. His value is little at best, we'll be lucky to get a late pick. And he'll be lucky if a team takes a chance on him as an NHL goalie at all again after the past two years.

he doesn't have much value and the oilers are in a playoff race believe it or not. they should keep him.

Yeah, and then factor in that your GM just publicly confirmed that Talbot fell out of favor and isn’t in the organization’s plans. Yikes.

Extending Koskinen destroyed what little value Talbot may have had.

no they can't retain..they are going to scramble if Sekara is going to come off LTIR.

I am sure there is a beer league team that can offer a skanky beer thats been rolling around in someones hockey bag for 6 years.

Talbot should carry next to no value now that Koskinen is extended. Pretty much told the whole league that Talbot has fallen out of favor.

Talbot likely had zero value before the Koskinen extension, but that signing sure drove that last nail in the coffin.

Putting aside the ****ing egregious terms of the Koskinen deal, why did it have to be signed today?

As Lou would say - when time’s on your side, use it...

What I could see happening is the Oilers trading him half retained as part of a bigger trade, and then that team potentially retaining more salary on him and dealing him for a late pick to a team that is having injury trouble at the position.

Two teams retaining on him puts him at just above 1M, which is makes him almost able to be completely buried if needed.

I think tomorrow after Spooner clears, Edmonton might make a trade that tries to accomplish two things. One, clear enough cap space to eventually activate Sekera, two add a top 6 forward rental. In which case, they probably end up having to overpay if they need significant cap considerations like packaging Spooner, Talbot (with retained salary), and then possibly have a team retain salary on the rental.

As a Sens fan, if we're moving Dzingel I think this would be a good opportunity because Dzingel's 1.8M cap hit would make him attractive in this situation.

I could see the Rangers as trade partners if there is any truth to the Oilers wanting Zuccarello. The Rangers likely would have to retain on Zuccarello as well as take Spooner and Talbot in order to make it work.

Straight up for Smith. Gives Edmonton some cap space next year.
Is that Brendan Smith your talking about? If so, then f*** no.

Why are we trading a UFA to be for a multi year cap dump for "cap space". We'd be better off just holding onto him until the summer and letting him walk lol.

Some reason I thought he had a year or two left

Talbot is a career backup goalie and when you retent him with 50%, the caphit is on line.

Then you can get a value of a backup rental on a trade.

Little if any value, might have to pay to dump him or just keep until contract runs out.

He’ll end up as a cap dump when the Oilers overpay for Brayden Schenn.

Then because it’s Edmonton, he’ll be solid with St. Louis, driving Oilers fans even more crazy.

What would be the ask for 1 game of Talbot, just to set the new record for goalies played in a season?

Not what Cam is worth, but what Chiarelli will end up getting.

Flyers will trade you McKenna, to give the Oilers cap relief. Then, if they want Neuvirth once he is healthy, they can upgrade on McKenna and waive McKenna if they so choose.

And the Flyers will retain 50% on Neuvirth if they did want him.

Oilers "win" is the addition of cap space.
