No thanks. 6 mil is way too much for a guy like Cally.

Also, very interesting comments by Richards on Cally's leadership!

You'd expect Callahan to say what he said there. What Richards had to say, on the other hand...now that was interesting.

“Things that have to be said will still get said,†Richards said. “I’m not taking anything away from Cally, but he was pretty young and not that vocal.

“It’s not like he was 38 and had been in the league for 18 years, so everybody was looking to him to listen to what he had to say,†Richards said of Callahan. “We have other guys here who know what to say and when to say it.

“I don’t want to make it sound like we don’t miss him. What he did on the ice, you can’t replace. It’s just that nothing is really going to change in the way we approach things in th room.â€

I always had a feeling that Cally was not vocal and more of a lead by example type.

But, really Richards, what about your leadership ability? Should Richards be taking shots at Cally considering that he wears an "A" as well and that this team has looked flat and unprepared many times this season?

Take a look in the mirror, Richards, and hold yourself accountable for once.

man, Richards. I hate media drama. If you have to express your opinion, tell him in private. I mean it's not like Richards had the opportunity to approach Callahan and say "hey, you could get a little more vocal" for 2.5 years or something.

agreed.

Callahan, to me, always seemed like a quintessential "A". Lead by example, but not a huge personality. Much like Leetch. The difference was Leetch had self-awareness about it.

That quote sounds to me like Richards is lobbying to stay and become the captain. His buddy is here now, he can start an Espo-esque country club.

And I like Richards as a person, too. It's just sort of how I interpret that comment.

I am sure if we offer him what he wants he will come back. Reality is we cant offer what he wants and he is isnt worth what he was asking for at the trade deadline. A team rebuilding or struggling will give it to him. They will let him help their youth as part of the rebuilding process for a few years. At that point the salary cap will be a lot higher and his cap hit wont be as devastating and they will trade him off for some peiece to help with the rebuild. This is just history repeating itself and I am very confused why people keep thinking otherwise.

Totally agree. If Richards feels that way, fine. But at this point there is absolutely no reason to say that to the press. Those comments say more about Brad Richards than they do about Ryan Callahan.

So he's admitting that
A) he's been more of a vocal leader
B) His vocal leadership has thus resulted in the listless, seemingly unmotivated and unengaged team we've seen too often this year.
Good. more reason for a buyouy

So Richie says what we all expected was the situation with Callahan? He graduated top in his class at the Captain's University at Chris Drury College, so it's not unexpected. Maybe not what a team like this needs though. Maybe what a team with a coach like Torts needs, but you'd like your captain to be vocal when the time comes.

On the topic of the thread: Please, please, please, for the love of God, when Callahan hits the open market, don't call him Sather.

Unless he wants a 4x$5.25 million deal, and he doesn't. That's about the most I'd bring to Steve Bartlett's desk for Callahan.

c'mon now. richards comments are a non-issue that the new york media(and fans) will blow out of proportion.

he's saying this stuff to take pressure off the team because they just lost their captain and have been in a slump. the only thing he said was that callahan is a 'lead by example' guy, which was fairly obvious, especially considering he learned from and modeled himself after drury.

nothing to see here. i would definitely be open to signing him but i don't think the rangers would go north of 5-5.5M. who knows with this management though?

I don't know if bridges have been too badly burned for him to return.

As far as Brad's comment. Take our Ranger/Callahan fandom out of the scenario and Brad's comment seems like a canned response of what would be said. I don't see anything wrong with anything he mentioned. Besides, you don't want him saying something along the lines of "Our team now has no leadership because we traded our captain"

I'm not saying the comments are an issue--they're not. I'm just surprised at the candor. And, if true, they paint a different picture of life inside the locker room than what I had imagined.

So my friend's wife, yes wife....used to play hockey and I guess met Vinny and Brad and some others somehow or used to play with them in some capacity...whatever. Anyway, she said Richards was the biggest ******* ever. I always tried to defend him, and didn't want to believe it, but comments like make me believe her.

Some of the best captains were on the quiet side and did their leading on the ice.

Yzerman and Sakic come to mind.

That's how I feel as well, especially those insinuations about older players who have been in the league for years and whatnot. Not really the time or place for something like that.

Staal's comments are more of what I would expect from someone in a leadership role:

“It feels different without [Callahan] here,†Staal said. “There were stretches when he wasn’t here because of injury, but that’s not the same, you knew he’d be back.

“Me having played with him for so long, it’s definitely going to take some getting used to. But to have a guy like Marty, who is such a leader himself and is so respected, come here, that’s going to be a help to a lot of guys.â€

Interesting. He is leaving the door open to re-sign with the Rangers. The Callahan drama will continue into the Summer now, and now speculation of him coming back will increase.

I think everyone wanted Cally to come back but for the right price, so lets see how this plays out.

As per the leadership thing, a good leader is someone who does the things to lead by example and not just tell people to do things. It's more like do what I do, not Do what I say.

Richards has accomplished far more than Callahan ever will. I say he deserves the right to give his view on the leadership of this team.

To be honest it merely sounds like he's trying to reassure everyone that the move of our captain doesnt hurt the team, since we have other resources to take from in terms of leadership.

Obviously this is a very clumsy way of doing it
