Proposal: Calgary-Ottawa

I'd do it without the extension as a Sens fan. At least if Staois was allowed to have a conversation and talk about #'s. They traded for Ullmark without the extension and worked that out and could be in a similar boat with Andersson. This feels light from a Sens perspective though, I think worst case scenario for the Sens is you make this deal and then "Rantanen" him at the deadline for a pretty good package of futures you can use to reload on the fly. Chabot still has pretty high high's in his game but there are still some inconsistencies and for that reason I'd take my chances with RA (without even bringing up the value discrepancy between RHD and LHD).

Sens would have to add a lot. Andersson has been playing better than Chabot and is a righty vs lefty, which is worth more considering demand around the league.
I cheer for both teams and while the argument that the Sens have to add is valid, it's not a lot. Andersson and Chabot have a lot of similar flaws and strengths. Chabot is more cost controlled, and the Flames have a boatload of space for him. Plus the Flames need a top 4 LHD badly, they have a boatload of RHD prospects ready to take the next step.

Andersson has been playing better than Chabot
I understand it’s not a perfect stat, but Andersson was -42 over his last 55 games (and he only had 16 points in that stretch). I don’t know what happened to him, but that number is so bad that it can’t just be bad luck.

EDIT: With that being said, I still think this is a fair base for a trade.

He had a broken fibula last 12 games, where I think he was around -18. But doesn’t change the fact he had a down year to his standards. Was off to great start till December then fell off.

Andersson seems to be overrated if people think he’s more valuable than Chabot. At best it’s a wash, especially with Andersson due for a hearty raise

A couple things....

Andersson was used as the Flames #1 and drew the tougher assignments, a role he shouldn't be playing.
As others mentioned he played the last month with a broken fibula, during that time he was -12
His partner Bahl, missed a month with injury and Andersson continued playing hard minutes but paired with Solovyov and Bean. He was -6 in that time.
Lastly, the Flames were ne of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL, you can't get pluses if your team doesn't score, and as a defenseman that only scores ~10 goals a year, if your teammates don't score, you don't get assists.

If the Flames were an average offensive team, no one would be talking about Andersson's +/-... look at Werenski in Columbus for example, he was only on the ice for 5 fewer ESGA than Andersson

Oddly enough, this probably does solve some issues for Calgary in terms of handedness and getting a long term partner for Weegar. A Chabot - Weegar pairing would actually be one of the better ones in the NHL in terms of two-way play.

It also buys some contract years without having to give Rasmus the 8+/8 he's looking for; wish Chabot was signed for a little longer than just a couple more seasons.

Also does give Parekh his path to the NHL and getting a partner like Bahl would be a really good first step.

I don't see why Andersson would re-sign in Ottawa. If that trade happened, it would be similar to the Ullmark trade, where Ottawa has to gamble on the player and sell them on the market.

Weegar might make more sense if Andersson is willing to re-sign with Calgary, and if Weegar is open to waiving to play for his hometown team.

With all that said, Chabot has seen a resurgence since being paired with Jensen (who is currently not playing great due to being injured). The way Staios has operated, it wouldn't shock me if he trades any of the core members to build his own version of this team, but I don't specifically think there would be added motivation to trade Chabot.

It also would create the same imbalance in Ottawa's lineup that Calgary is trying to fix. Ottawa doesn't have a LHD who is ready to eat up 20+ minutes. Kleven might get there one day, but I don't think he is close enough. So they'd need multiple moves to address that.

I could see it as a basis for a shake-up trade for Ottawa, and the added capspace it affords Ottawa next year is not insignificant, but there could be better ways to go about a shake-up and/or opening up space if that's even the direction that makes sense.

Chabot has had an excellent year and I think he has mostly been good in the bit of playoff he's played. Not so sure about Ottawa adding, but I could see it going either way. Honestly, if we are trading Chabot to Calgary I would be trying to find a way to get Andersson + Bahl without sacrificing another defender.

Sanderson - Zub
Bahl - Andersson
Kleven - Jensen

Pretty nasty, but I don't see how we could make it worthwhile for Calgary. And unless we can add a good, big, physical D, I still see us having many of the same key issues moving forward.

That'd be a big ask, Bahl rounded out into an excellent top 4 guy for us. Massive size, reach and enough mean to keep people honest.
