Speculation: Calgary Flames interested in Brandon Carlo

I get that the flames are tied for 8th but let's be real it's taken a season where literally nothing has gone right for the nucks and basically everything going right for the flames.
Unless Demko is done for the season or the nucks become sellers which I highly doubt, they will finish ahead of them.

Not saying the flames should be sellers but adding an ok Dman that provides no offense makes little sense imo.

Again not hating, I actually think the flames have a bright future but the nucks really have no choice but to go all in at this point where as the flames don't really need to since they were never supposed to be in this position.

Depends which Carlo teams think they are getting.
The best version if it's the Flames, being eternal optimists in the least practical way is their MO.

I feel you, but the Flames as an organization are always desperate to avoid rebuilding. Even if it's a mirage of playoff contention brought on by a failing Canucks team and a hot rookie goaltender.

There's a reason the Flames are tied with the Wild for most mid team in the NHL.

This makes no sense, the last position the Flames need players at is right defense, it's our only strong position. Meanwhile the left side is a wasteland of AHLers.
Weegar plays LD too. Carlo would immediately slot in with him and if Andersson in the next year-plus is moved then we still have the same # of RHD. Weegars flexibility makes any defenseman a possibility.

I’ll play devils advocate here, this makes a lot of sense for the Flames from 2 perspectives.

First they need one more top 4 defenseman in the worst of ways currently. For this season alone, it let’s Calgary run Bahl-Andersson then Weegar-Carlo. But with Parekh coming up and looking like he could be trying to push for a spot as soon as next year, it gives us another top tier defensive option to pair with him (all of Bahl, Weegar, and Carlo would be options). Carlo is signed with 2 additional with a cheap cap hit that would help with bringing the kids up. We could then hide Parekh on the 3rd line with a high end option to insulate him in Carlo, and he would have great options to move up with if his play merits more time.

Bahl-Andersson
Weegar-Pachal
Parekh-Carlo

Every pair has an extremely strong defensive player for Parekh, and it’s already a decent defense core as well.

The second perspective is it could allow Andersson to be traded without a large loss to the team. Conroy wants to reward the team for its play so far and also wants to keep them competitive during the re-tool, but also doesn’t want to cost the future of the team in any moves. Any futures used (Florida, NJ or Vegas 1st) would be small compared to the futures gained by trading Andersson. Could be a smart way to gain assets while also not hurting the team too much with the strength of the offensive defenseman in Calgary’s system.

We don't really need an offensive defenseman, our lack of defenders than can actual defend causes our more offensively gifted defensemen to have to reign it in. Adding a cost effective defenseman with team control for 2 more years fits Conroy's M.O, other than he's a little older than Sharangovich, Bahl, Frost and Farabee when they were acquired.

Makes perfect sense. Flames have more depth at LD than RD.

Andersson will be traded at some point and is not a huge guy. Even if he isn't the Flames need more depth at RD.

Carlo is the same age and is big, an element (size) on the Flames D that is lacking.

So you trade for a guy like Carlo, even if he is not an offensive juggernaut.

Bahl (6'6" 230 lb)/Andersson (6'1" 202 lb)
Weegar (6'0" 206) /Carlo (6'5" 220)
Solovyov (6'3" 208) /Pachal (6'2 202)
Bean (6'1" 191)

Just spit balling the d-combos. The point is the Flames have depth in the AHL where players are ready to make the jump.

Depth - Poirier LD/RD, Grushnikov LD, Brzustewicz RD, Kuznetzov LD/RD, Jurmo LD, Miromanov, Barrie

As soon as next year it is entirely possible that RD Zayne Parekh is good enough to make the jump to the NHL right out of juniors.

Anyway, the Flames have assets and/or picks to make a deal for Carlo plausible.

Care to elaborate for those of us who don't watch the Bruins often?
In seasons prior Carlo was an amazing pure shutdown dman kinda like a poor man's Slavin, not saying Carlo is in the same tier but they both play that eraser style and can play in the top 4 on a contender. He never had much offense going for him but could chip in the occasional helper and was reliable to get the job done on defense. This season he hasn't been at the top of his game for the first 60. Granted he has had concussion issues in past seasons and maybe this season so that could be a factor but up until 2 or 3 games ago he was hard to watch to put it nicely. He like the rest of the Bruins came to camp not ready for the season due to a summer of weddings and parties but that usually isn't his MO. Bruins fans are torn on he needs a change of scenery to get that pro edge back to his game or maybe just a mulligan season and give him another go. When he is playing to his top level he is an incredible asset but don't expect to be dazzled much especially when the puck is on his stick. He also isn't mean in the slightest which can be frustrating given his size and position.

Is Carlo actually being shopped?
Yes. The Bruins are sellers. Sweeney said as much at his press conference after 4 Nations.

Any chance Carlo and Andersson could be the basis for the deal?

Really depends on the cost but I think this makes sense. Especially if Calgary looks to shop Andersson in the off season. Flames have been playing one of Hanley or Miromanov pretty regularly in the top 4 and it just doesn't work at all. Personally I would rather target a similar LD like Samuelson but Carlo is fine. Boston will probably ask too much for him though

In my view the answer would be yes. Carlo can't play, or hasn't shown, that he can play Andersson minutes, but then again maybe that wouldn't be the expectation.
