Calgary Flames Experiencing Attendance Issues

To add to this - the number of people willing to line up to buy shitty arena concession food and miss half of the following period because they were waiting is incredible to me. A thought process I can't even begin to understand.

I loathe to defend Calgary, but if you knew anything about those seats you would understand why they are only $7 and still not popular at that price. Those are incredibly far from the ice, if anyone in front of you gets up it blocks half of the view and a lot of seats in that section are obstructed view.

Because it's more about the experience and hanging out with friends then hockey itself for a lot of people who go to games. I don't go to games anymore but when I did years ago, I could count on numerous occasions where I would see women often either with husbands or with co-workers who would be doing their nails or on their phones or too busy chatting or reading somehing while the play is underway.

Haven't been to Calgary to see a game, so I don't know about the specific seats, just pointing out that $7 seats are available to all those saying "if we had Sunbelt prices, we'd sell out". Seats near the rafters in any arena are certainly not the best.

Those are much worse than the rafters in any arena. Arenas don't come with seats like that anymore.

Even if it were Game 7 of the SCF I don't know if I would pay $7 to sit there because you would miss most of the game with either an obstructed view, people getting in and out of their seats, or being simply too far from the ice.

Fine...still not hitting the point I was making, but whatever. They have had strong attendance in the past, not sure why all the sudden they're now a terrible view.

Sections 211, 212, and 213....center ice...there are a bunch of tickets from $27 - $50 available for tomorrow night's game.

So, all the excuses in this thread of why fans aren't showing up to these games are because they don't want to pay to watch a "bad team". That doesn't work for Atlanta?

Or is the economy, because Atlanta left at the tail end of the worst economic conditions since the great depression. Funny how the excuses only work for your favorite teams.
You failed to answer the question, big guy. Attendance in Atlanta sucked. The team sucked. They already had two chances, so why do they deserve a 3rd team while Arizona continues to lose money for the entirety of its existence?

Nice reading skills...big guy.

Besides matching your excuses already, Atlanta has grown by over a million people since they were moved.

You mention AZ for some reason...So...where do you think Winnipeg should move? I hope no teams have to move anywhere.

Let me guess...you're a move all the teams to QC and Hamilton guy?

I would rather have a woman painting her nails instead of half the male fans who don't understand the game but have to opine about every single play as if they are an expert.

I think normal people are just kind of at their breaking point with ticket prices. A coworker of mine had lower bowl tickets to round 2 vs Vegas (game 4 or 5 I can't remember who had home ice) and couldn't even get rid of them for face value. ($840 for the pair IIRC)
I make better than average money and I go to two games a year at max and don't attend playoff games because the prices are so inflated. Most season ticket holders I know go to maybe half the games and sell off the rest to get some of their money back.

I don't even think it matters how much you make to be honest. Someone making 300k a year knows if something is overpriced as much as someone making 100k.

It's just not worth what you're expected to pay.

It’s good to know so many other people seem to be in the same boat.

Every year for the past 6 years me and 4 friends do a weekend in Boston to catch a Bruins game (closest NHL arena to us). It’s tradition.

I make a 6 figure salary, more than I’ve ever made on paper…but with mortgage payments going up, a bag of groceries somehow costing $150, gas prices rising, electric bills rising, EVERYTHING rising, this will be the first year we’re not going because we simply can’t justify the cost anymore.

The world is in shambles.

A lot of folks in and around Canadian cities are going to face tough choices this winter just trying to keep their homes heated. The rising costs of groceries and other goods have already been draining people all year long and it’s about to get way worse.

1) Those tickets are for sale on StubHub. Why does it matter where hockey fans buy the tickets from? I buy most of my tickets (Falcons, Braves) from brokers. Ticketmaster is not the only way to go to a game. Point is, there is a mass of tickets available for under $10 that are going unsold to Calgary fans.

2) My point...I was replying to someone knocking on Florida prices (for some reason) saying Canadian teams would sell out if they were cheaper. I was just pointing out that certainly isn't the case.
Again those are resale seats. They have already been sold. It simply reflects the resale market for that particular game, not the original sale price. And I defy you to find me any game in the history of resale outfits where there aren't some tickets available for resale right up to game time.

As for Calgary Flames prices versus Florida Panthers prices, are we talking resale prices for both teams? If so, fair enough. But if you are comparing Calgary Flames resale prices versus Florida Panthers original ticket prices then that is hardly a fair comparison. If the cheapest original ticket prices for a Flames game is $50 - $60 while the cheapest original ticket price for a Panthers game is $25 or so than that would likely illustrate a substantial difference in potential game revenue between the two franchises.

It ain't just in Canada, the US is seeing the exact same problem. Companies are starting to do the same thing here as well. High interest rates and inflation is putting the hurt on the middle class down.

I used to be a season ticket holder in Nashville, and even when I wasn't I'd go to about 15 games a year. I haven't been in about 5 years because they kept raising ticket prices, parking kept getting more expensive, not to mention concessions and since I lived an hour away even the cost of gas factored in.

It's not just an issue with Canadian teams.
So much this. Inflation has absolutely kicked my ass in the worst ways. What used to be upper middle class money that I was making is now dead middle at best. The cost of living has gone up 20% over the last 3 years while wages have gone up maybe 2%, and that's not something unique to me at all. I'm just glad the Canes and Charlotte FC are hot tickets in the state right now so I can at least break even (or a bit better) on games I can't make.

Everybody occasionally experiences attendance issues. Y’all just be sure to remember that next time it’s a sub belt team.

The counter argument against what Chipman said recently about not rebuilding is Apathy from the fans because they don’t see the team improving to be a cup contender. It’s the same old borderline PO team and bounced in round 1 if they make it. At some point the fans will grow tired of it.

Flames the same way. Canucks were like that with Aquilini. Not commuting to rebuild and Frankie comes out at the start of 19-20 saying the dark times are over only to have 21, 22, 23 seasons end with horrific starts to the season.

Aquaman was acting like Jerry Jones running the team until shit hit the fan then fans began hating how the Canucks were being portrayed in the lower mainland.

I think he gets it now, finally.
The front office and coaching staff are stable and Aquaman can f*** off buying expensive trucks or paying his child support whatever the f***.

Canadian teams and attendance issues.
Look at the direction of our country

expensive computers**

i met aquilini randomly in 2019 and he was pretty chill, my dad asked him about boesers contract and he opened up about how he felt (he thought it was a lot of money for an unproven guy). days later he was signed.

Good news for flames fans

Again resale seats. Whether someone buys those resale seats or not, they will still count towards the official attendance.
Think we're debating separate things, here. I really don't know how ticket brokers work in terms of revenue for teams. As noted, I was just replying to the poster who was repeating a popular cliche here over the years about having tickets available for Sunbelt teams that were "so cheap". All I'm pointing out is that there are tickets available in Calgary for $7. That's it. Just wanting to try to end that misconception that southern teams have these cheap tickets that they can't sell and everywhere else has it so bad.

And not knocking Calgary, here. Same story in many other markets.
