The announcement will be at the site where the previous deal was....and died. Members of Stampede Board will be there as well. Last deal was a 3 way agreement between the Flames, City and Stampede Board (for land swap).

Development permit was approved a month or so before it died so keeping it on the same site make sense and they can break ground ASAP

If a deal has been made it's just devastating news for Calgary taxpayers. Not only do we have to shoulder an increasing share of the city's business taxes but we have to sacrifice hundreds of millions of tax dollars to the rich little snots who own the Flames.

The Flames should have been forced to pay for their own effing arena. I don't know why that's so tough for our council and city management to understand. If the Flames can't do the right thing and pay for their shiny toy then maybe they should think about leaving.

And there better not be any provincial money. After what was said by our current premier as opposition....leading into the election, talk about vote buying.

But that is enough politics....but impossible to avoid it when talking arenas in Canada because large arenas and their tennents are public cash grabbing whores and politicians are all too happy to oblige :)

Well timed to buy a few votes in the upcoming Provincial election from Flames fans!
Double edged sword. If it's a bad deal for the city they'll lose votes and if it includes provincial or federal funding it'll tick off the rest of the province.

Regardless. Hopefully it's a good deal and congrats to Flames fans. Will be good to go to the first BoA.

Excellent point about provincial money! Why should taxpayers in Peace River pay to make the Flames owners even richer?

They justify it by saying that these arenas contribute to the economy. Because that's what the bazillionaires who make their bazillions in their businesses that use the arena will tell them.

The city economy - a city the ruling party needs to win in order to hold onto power in the upcoming provincial election - but not the provincial.

It'll lose votes imo. We saw in Edmonton how divided people were. So not only are you going to piss off people in Calgary, but now you are also going to piss off the rest of the province.

There is the CRL though which I assume is what Calgary would be using.

Moving the team to Utah.
They can have it. We'll just spend our money on something else.

In all seriousness I wonder if that's why Utah has suddenly jumped onto the radar screen. Is this another ploy by the Flames owners to score their free money from Calgary taxpayers (Like the Oilers tried to pull off with a visit to Seattle that one time)?
