Calgary gets: Marner

Toronto gets: Tkachuk

Rational: Calgary has too many lwers and no rw depth lol. We have Gaudreau, mangi, and Tkachuk has natural top 6 lwers, and we have Pelletier on the way as well who is another left shot lwer.

Yes Toronto gets a pending RFA, but he doesn’t get 10.5 million and adds skilled sandpaper to the top 6. Balances out the forward group better and helps the bad lw depth Toronto has.

Ik this trade has a lot of problems (mainly tkachuk’s rfa status), but I’m more interested in Toronto fans feelings towards marner at this point. He’s a great player, but it seems like the situation is deteriorating on that front. Anyways, roast away!

Didn't writing Gaudreau, Mangiapane, and Marner trigger a warning bell for you? That's a tiny top 6.

Mangiapane is gonna get paid, so we do not need to spend even more money on wingers.

If mangi keeps his play up, our natural lwers are going to be in the 25 million dollar range. That’s why I suggested the swap.

I’d be pretty pissed if Toronto pulled this off. They stand a lot to gain from it and now there’s two Tkachucks in the division.

I guess I'd do it, just because Tkachuk is gonna get paid with his next contract.
Nevermind, thought Marner's cap hit was smaller by a million or so

It doesn't make sense. Tkachuk is going to make a lot of money on his upcoming deal

Not $11 M. Deal is whether Toronto can re-sign him and for what?

Yes, Marner's cap was higher than I remembered. Also NMC for the last two years, which makes it bad for Flames if he doesn't want to re-sign. I'd rather have Tkachuk if he signs for less than $10M per for 7-8 years

Going to an even more highly paid small winger doesn't seem like a good solution though.

I assume one of Gaudreau or Tkachuk is traded this year. Marner isn't who I want to replace them with

Fair enough. Don’t necessarily agree though.

I could see Tkachuk going to Buffalo or a third team in a trade for Eichel

Ya I just do not want to go into summer with an unsigned Gaudreau and Tkachuk with a one year option. I'd rather trade Gaudreau half way through a playoff push haha

This is interesting and worthy of consideration as the basis of a trade, although I think a case can be made that Calgary should add another second tier piece. A lot of Leaf fans probably feel Marner is far more valuable but is that how other NHL GM's see things? If the Leafs choose to move one of the big guns I think Marner is the guy. I don't want to move Matthews. Tavares won't get the same level of return, maybe not much of one at all because of the contract. Nylander could be moved but he is the guy who has performed in big games recently when the other three have not, and he's also paid quite a bit less.

The contract for Tkachuk is obviously a big item that could affect any deal.

Even though I would think about this one, I wouldn't make any trade now. The Leafs committed to sticking with the core this season, and so it needs to play out. It's too early in the season for this kind of trade. If we get to mid-season and it's a gong show, I wouldn't be looking at just trading one guy, I'd be considering a complete and total overhaul of the front office and the roster.

After seeing the Brady contract negotiations, is it really unreasonable to think Matthew will be asking for $11M on a long-term deal? Certainly, he'll be pushing for $10M+.

The Leafs are really in a bad position with the contracts they have. While having some sandpaper on the top lines will help, Hyman provided that before he signed with Edmonton. Ritchie was supposed to provide it. Foligno was supposed to provide it. If Marner goes, it will have to be for a young cost-controlled player to give the Leafs some cap flexibility in the short term. To lose Marner for around $1M in cap relief isn't worth it.

Tkachuk is going home to St. Louis in 2023.

As neutral team fan, I would take Tkachuk at his contract vs. Marner at his. Can't have a guy who disappears in the playoffs taking up $11 million in cap space.

1.) to be fair…… they said the same about Brady
2.) Matt hasn’t exactly led the flames to the promise land

Tkachuk has 5 points in 15 playoff games

Value is very close. Fit isnt as bad as others are saying. Top line of Gaudreau Lindholm and Marner could be a problem as they would pass the puck back and forth refusing to shoot.

The same Lindholm with 6 goals in 5 games this year?

I like this proposal from a Flames perspective, but also from a Leafs perspective. I actually proposed this about 7 months ago. I would want a small add (2nd rd. pick) for the Flames for taking on the additional salary.

I imagine Gaudreau and Marner would play on separate lines
