Cale Makar scores 30 goals in a season, first since Mike Green

Makar has a better shot and is more physical, yes. Speed is too close to call (Hughes recorded the highest top skating speed of any NHL player this season at 24.56 miles per hour).

One thing though I truly believe Hughes is better at is his elusiveness with the puck due to his tremendous edge work and smaller size.

Example at 1:00

Yes, I know it’s against Rempe but you get the idea at what he can do to the players trying to defend him on a nightly basis.

As for Hughes not killing penalties. You need to realize that Hughes is by far and away the Canucks’ best player, often playing close to 30 minutes a night. He has over 20 points more than the next player on his team, while playing defense and missing a lot of games. In no world does it remotely make sense for him to kill penalties when the team has other defenseman that can do it. It’s not even that he can’t (he used to under Travis Green), it’s that he shouldn’t. The Canucks just don’t have the firepower up front like the Avs do to drive offensive zone chances. The Canucks #1 center has 45 points. The Avalanche’s has 114.

No one is knocking Hughes' offensive ability. Its his defensive ability that we simply dont see. It may be amazing, but like you stated and stats prove, the Canucks put him in the offensive zone every chance they get. I think it is strategically wise too given how bad the rest of the team is, but when Makar/Werenski/Fox/Doughty/whoever play everywhere and get deployed against the other teams best, its easy to pick out Hughes for being the odd one out.

Videos are cute, but Makar does that nightly at this point.

Also rounding up to 30 Min is cute. I personally would look at in 5 min increments. All the big boys play 25, with Werenski being a bit ahead. We all know the one who plays zero short handed minutes though.

Of the top 50 TOI/GP dmen, only 5 play little to no PK (Hughes, Bouchard, Angelo, Montour, and Hutson). And you can guess who is the worst there.

How come whenever Makar accomplishes something, Canucks fans instantly come out and attempt to make a argument why Hughes is better

Hughes in NOT better but is an absolutely incredible talent. In my opinion Makar will always be a small step above Hughes for their career.

I strongly feel Makar will end his career with more Cups and individual awards than Hughes but both will become hall of fame players when their careers end.

I don’t get why Canucks fans always feel the need to attempt to convince others Hughes is better. I strongly feel Makar is not only the best dman in the world by a decent size margain currently but also one of the best overall players in the world(not just defencemen)

Both teams are estatic with who they have and it obviously pleases their respective fans.

Seemed like it was just a matter of time before he’d do it, but it’s strange how elusive it is for defensemen, even in higher scoring eras. Even when Brent Burns had 29, he was at like 27 the first 3/4 of the year and then had 2 goals in the final 1/4. Probably the equivalent of like 70 goals for a forward today. Not impossible (given Matthews had 69), but takes the right quality of player and the right season. Will be interesting to see where he ends up on the all time goals list. Bourque and Coffey would be tough to catch but MacInnis for 3rd seems like a good bet

Hughes was brought up first by a Leafs fan then by Avs fans

They haven't really though. It's mostly Avs fans trolling.

I want to briefly touch on the edge work/elusiveness.

If you think that Makar doesn't break as many ankles, or is less elusive with the puck, or doesn't have the edge work that Hughes has, then I am afraid you aren't watching enough of Makar playing hockey.

Makar has some of the best edge work in the league.

It absolutely goes both ways. But I agree with MOST of everything else you've stated here.

They’re both two of the best ever. I think Hughes is smoother but I don’t know if he’s more effective at it

Never said Makar didn’t. I just think Hughes is the best in the league at it.

No one was talking about Hughes in this thread until an Avs fan chimed in asking where’s all the Canucks fans. We already know Hughes isn’t in the running due to all the games missed. We’ve got more important team matters to worry about at the moment than whether or not Hughes wins another Norris. As for why Canucks fans argue for Hughes…because he was flat out better than Makar last season and was arguably playing better than anyone before suffering multiple different injuries this season. There is definitely a case to be made for Hughes as the best defensemen in the league right now.

Makar very well end his career with more Cups and individual awards. He plays on a way better team, which does help. He plays with arguably the best forward in the league, too. The Canucks’ top C who is being paid close to 12 million dollars a year didn’t even break 50 points this season. Time will tell if Hughes will remain with the Canucks long-term.

I had an unhealthy obsession when Jay Bouwmeester was drafted in 2002 and few years before that there was Oleg Tverdovsky, Bryan Berard and a few years after there was Drew Doughty, Ekblad and such... but I think Makar is the only defenseman in the last 25-30 years that have met my fantasy expection of a defenseman that has "it".

Based off of precedence this means he's going to lose the Norris to like Victor Hedman

I would say Hughes is more elusive for sure, I wouldn’t even say that Makar is a super elusive player.

Where Makar excels is in his lateral movement which for me is easily the best of all time & maybe on a tier completely by himself, I can’t even think of anyone that comes close really.

I don’t consider elusive and lateral quickness the same though, to me they are totally different things, a young Girard was more elusive than Makar is now for example.

Needs more Rempe.

So height is a requirement in being elusive now? I think youre overanalyzing a word to make it exclusive to your guy.
