Makar has a better shot and is more physical, yes. Speed is too close to call (Hughes recorded the highest top skating speed of any NHL player this season at 24.56 miles per hour).
One thing though I truly believe Hughes is better at is his elusiveness with the puck due to his tremendous edge work and smaller size.
Example at 1:00
Yes, I know it’s against Rempe but you get the idea at what he can do to the players trying to defend him on a nightly basis.
As for Hughes not killing penalties. You need to realize that Hughes is by far and away the Canucks’ best player, often playing close to 30 minutes a night. He has over 20 points more than the next player on his team, while playing defense and missing a lot of games. In no world does it remotely make sense for him to kill penalties when the team has other defenseman that can do it. It’s not even that he can’t (he used to under Travis Green), it’s that he shouldn’t. The Canucks just don’t have the firepower up front like the Avs do to drive offensive zone chances. The Canucks #1 center has 45 points. The Avalanche’s has 114.
How come whenever Makar accomplishes something, Canucks fans instantly come out and attempt to make a argument why Hughes is better
Hughes in NOT better but is an absolutely incredible talent. In my opinion Makar will always be a small step above Hughes for their career.
I strongly feel Makar will end his career with more Cups and individual awards than Hughes but both will become hall of fame players when their careers end.
I don’t get why Canucks fans always feel the need to attempt to convince others Hughes is better. I strongly feel Makar is not only the best dman in the world by a decent size margain currently but also one of the best overall players in the world(not just defencemen)
Both teams are estatic with who they have and it obviously pleases their respective fans.
I’m really not sure who’s joking and who’s being serious reading this thread, but this must be a joke, and it’s a good oneHe's not joking. Green was phenomenal his own end. Makar is a mess defensively.

It absolutely goes both ways. But I agree with MOST of everything else you've stated here. How come whenever Makar accomplishes something, Canucks fans instantly come out and attempt to make a argument why Hughes is better

I want to briefly touch on the edge work/elusiveness.
If you think that Makar doesn't break as many ankles, or is less elusive with the puck, or doesn't have the edge work that Hughes has, then I am afraid you aren't watching enough of Makar playing hockey.
Makar has some of the best edge work in the league.

He is just unbelievable.Just hit 29 goals. Can he hit 30? Would be the first defenseman since Mike Green in the 2008 season.
Makar has hit 28 goals twice before.
No one was talking about Hughes in this thread until an Avs fan chimed in asking where’s all the Canucks fans. We already know Hughes isn’t in the running due to all the games missed. We’ve got more important team matters to worry about at the moment than whether or not Hughes wins another Norris. As for why Canucks fans argue for Hughes…because he was flat out better than Makar last season and was arguably playing better than anyone before suffering multiple different injuries this season. There is definitely a case to be made for Hughes as the best defensemen in the league right now.How come whenever Makar accomplishes something, Canucks fans instantly come out and attempt to make a argument why Hughes is better

I would say Hughes is more elusive for sure, I wouldn’t even say that Makar is a super elusive player.Never said Makar didn’t. I just think Hughes is the best in the league at it.
Oilers fans are the only ones that take more L's.I will never tire of seeing the Canucks and their fans take Ls.

So height is a requirement in being elusive now? I think youre overanalyzing a word to make it exclusive to your guy.I would say Hughes is more elusive for sure, I wouldn’t even say that Makar is a super elusive player.
Where Makar excels is in his lateral movement which for me is easily the best of all time & maybe on a tier completely by himself, I can’t even think of anyone that comes close really.
I don’t consider elusive and lateral quickness the same though, to me they are totally different things, a young Girard was more elusive than Makar is now for example.
