Cale Makar scores 30 goals in a season, first since Mike Green

Norris finalisits this year

1. Cale big balls Makar
2. Zach Werenski
3. Jacob Slavin - give the guy playing actual defense some love.
4. Devon Toews
5. Luke Hughes

Cale Makar short-handed average time on ice per game - 2:08
Quinn Hughes short-handed average time on ice per game - 0:08

Hughes can't even be trusted to play PK. "Oh, we don't want him to play PK and get injured." So, then, he's not really that important defensively, is he?

The Avs obviously don't want Makar getting injured, but he is on the top PK unit because he's a beast defensively as well as offensively.

Cale Makar blocked shots - 119 in 77 GP
Quinn Hughes blocked shots - 62 in 61 GP

Quinn Hughes is a very good player, but please, there's no comparison.

Cale Makar is bigger, faster, stronger, scores more, plays more defense, etc. There isn't a single thing that Hughes is better than Makar at.
This.

Ask every GM in the league, would they rather build a team around Makar or Hughes. You know what the vast majority, if not all, are saying.

It's OK to think Makar is better, but also appreciate how great Hughes is, too.

This is becoming the McDavid vs MacKinnon thing. McDavid is the better player, but on any given night, or even season, MacKinnon could stand out more. The same applies to Makar vs Hughes. Makar is the better player, but Hughes can outperform him. But the full body of work speaks for itself.

I don't know why people have to get hurt about that. Hughes is not the best d-man in the world, and that's OK because he's a fantastic player and the Canucks are lucky to have him.

Hard disagree. Until Hughes plays actual defense, this Hughes is the 23-24 Bouchard playoff run or 22-23 Karlsson Norris for me. Points are points, so Im not saying they arent massively important, but it would be nice for defensemen to play you know, actual defense.

I actually appreciate the strategy the Canucks are taking deploying him to be the best offensive version of himself, but then they need to do more to make the other 5 defensively above average then.

Hughes isnt in Makars stratosphere as an overall defenseman.

Also its pretty proven now since 2022 for sure and even 2019 that MacKinnon is the better player. McDavid's difference is the powerplay and were seeing this season where he stands when PP opps are way down.

AC/DC even wrote a song about Makar. Big ups for the Canadian kid.

What do you want us to say? Hughes got hurt and took himself out of the running for the Norris. He was also arguably the front runner before he got hurt. He was playing even better than last season, and doing so with almost zero help. On an island out there.

Hughes is leading his team in scoring with 70 points in 61 games. Next is Brock Boeser with 46 points in 68 games.
Yes I know that but when Makar gets hurt you guys jump all over him { injury prone etc ...}. It's a two way street and sometimes comes back to bite you . If ya read my later post you will see I do like Hughes and I think he is a great team leader .

Congrats to Makar!

A lot of pretty inflammatory takes in here from Avs fans for sure, Hughes would be fighting neck and neck for the Norris right now if he’d stayed healthy most likely. But it’s not like Van fans haven’t done the same on more than one occasion.

Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe are all generally seen as better than the best D-man in Orr.

Crosby, Bobby Hull, Jagr, OV are generally seen as better than the 2nd best dman in Bourque or Lidstrom.

Makar is incredible but discounting Mackinnons season to prop up Makar is foolish
“Prop up” is an interesting take to be sure.

As for the rest here, you are using a measuring stick of the best ever to play the game which is fine if you want to. But one Avs player has a legit chance at being talked about amongst the best ever at his position, and it ain’t MacKinnon.

It looks like you prefer forwards and that’s fine too, but don’t discredit a player for not playing that position.

At least it's not the Makar fox debate anymore.

Makar has a better shot and is more physical, yes. Speed is too close to call (Hughes recorded the highest top skating speed of any NHL player this season at 24.56 miles per hour).

One thing though I truly believe Hughes is better at is his elusiveness with the puck due to his tremendous edge work and smaller size.

Example at 1:00

Yes, I know it’s against Rempe but you get the idea at what he can do to the players trying to defend him on a nightly basis.

As for Hughes not killing penalties. You need to realize that Hughes is by far and away the Canucks’ best player, often playing close to 30 minutes a night. He has over 20 points more than the next player on his team, while playing defense and missing a lot of games. In no world does it remotely make sense for him to kill penalties when the team has other defenseman that can do it. It’s not even that he can’t (he used to under Travis Green and Bruce Boudreau), it’s that he shouldn’t. The Canucks just don’t have the firepower up front like the Avs do to drive offensive zone chances. The Canucks #1 center has 45 points. The Avalanche’s has 114.

Makar is Mack and Hughes is JGaudreu (rip). The smaller size makes them even more allusive yes but Makar is just a fundamentally more all round player with basically no weakness.
