Calder Watch : 2024-25 Season

I think Hutson will win it, he's having an insane year. Hopefully this knocks 500K off a celebrini extension. I do think Celebrini's season will get overshadowed when he doesn't win the calder: playing 1C as an 18 year old on the worst team in the league is very impressive.

But, this award isn't about "the most impressive 18 year old in the league" or "who projects to have XYZ." It's about the best rookie year, and it's Hutson's to lose right now
Celebrini is an incredible player, likely walks to the Calder in any other year. Looks like a guy that’s 5-6 years older in terms of development. Future top 5-10 player in the league.

Michkov is a sublime offensive talent, I thought he would run away with it but here we are. He likely still ends up a 100+ point superstar.

Wolf has been a revelation for Calgary. Unbelievable season, but playing so many less games than the others hurts him IMO. Consequence of the position unfortunately. Goalies are voodoo but he looks like a future Vezina winner.

Hutson has had one of the best rookie seasons in NHL history. His growth from October to now is almost unfathomable. Did not expect him to reach his current level of play for a few years. He’s on pace to break records and unfortunately for the others I think he has this locked up.

Voters probably vote on the whole year, not a 5 game sample.
Who said they were gonna vote solely on his last 5 games?

The point is that he’s played himself out of the running considering all the other impressive rookies he’s up against, most of whom have gone on a tear while he’s been slumping.

His skid came at the worst possible time.

Yeah but he’s now 21st in goals saved above expected. He has the same number of saves above expected per game as our very own Montembeault (0.29).

Obviously I don’t watch Wolf enough but good lord I can tell you I wouldn’t give the Calder to Monty over Hutson if he was a rookie.

Statistically he doesn’t cut it.

Since it’s a close race

Montreal is 4 games over 500
Calgary is 9 games over 500

Still leaning towards Wolf.
Is this your only reasoning? Wolf is having an incredible year but Im not sure id even have him top 3 as of right now.

Michkov has played his way back into the race & no way Wolf is replacing Hutson or Celebrini

My heart still feels Celebrini is in it, but my brain is starting to say that ship has sailed. As far as the skaters go, they each have an interesting story behind the points/stats/metrics.

Michkov: One could argue that he would have thrived if Tortz was out earlier, or his minutes assignments were adjusted earlier. Either way, he's been tearing it up recently at a rate most people thought he could have most of the year. Kid is gonna be a star obviously, and would have a pretty clear path to Calder in most other seasons. Long term I hope the Flyers build well around him and are able to get results as a team.

Celebrini: One could argue that as an 18 year old playing against mostly top competition on a tanking team where some of the better players were let go at or before the deadline led to a decline in production. Also he had his injury, which was a bummer. Either way his year has been pretty impressive, often he looks like the best player on the ice. It seems like he hits a post every other game, and he just brings a solid 200 ft game. He elevates his linemates and I'm excited for his future, and the Sharks'.

Hutson: Just an insane showing from him this year, and having the playoffs in his sights he's continued to pile up points. At his size and point in development, it's wild to see what he's been able to do. His eye for the game and PPQB level is fun to watch. At this point it's his to lose unless something shifts drastically in the final games.

Just a super fun year to track rookies that are gonna tear it up in the coming years. This isn't even touching on Wolf which has been amazing, and Smith who has turned it around after a slow start.

Hutson gets his 60th point and 55th assist
