After arriving back in the AHL, he started playing well, but then faded. Ended up having a worse stat line than Matthew Villalta.

It seems like goalies do well under Tortorella's system. So maybe he'll be able to recover somewhat, but I don't think he's NHL caliber.

Even beyond his mental game, Cal's athleticism is levels below what it needs to be at his size. Probably in part due to being in his own head (not trusting his instincts on movement), but he was about as slow as any healthy goalie I've seen last season. If you're going to be a positional goalie who doesn't have the size of an Adin Hill, you need to be able to move quickly to get set, which he can't or didn't.
