Quebec's top prospect Zachary Morin left the Youngstown Phantoms #USHL in the last few hours. He is back home and is considering joining the Sea Dogs (QMJHL).

Possibly but this can also be a case of him underperforming in Youngstown and looking for a fresh start somewhere else.

He hasn't done well in the USHL and Youngstown has played him down the lineup, going to major junior gives him the opportunity to be back home and thrive in a more offensive Q

I think that's probably it. In his QMJHL Draft, he was part of a "big 3" with Desnoyers and Guité. They're both thriving as first line players in the Q and they're going to be NHL 1st rounders while he's still playing down the lineup in Youngstown. Boston U in 2026 must seem far away right now.

He would have likely been going to BU in 2025, but with his current performances in junior, Pandolfo may have deferred him to 2026.

Not surprising, I was wondering if something like this might happen. He got a look on the Benak line at the Fall Classic, but quickly found himself on the 4th line. No powerplay time, no pk time. Didn't play much this past weekend against Chicago and the shifts he had, he was running around trying to hit everyone in sight. I get it, when you find yourself lower in the lineup, you have to do something to try to be an effective player.

Ultimately though, I just don't think Morin is that talented. For a tender and BU commit, he never flashed the type of high end upside you'd expect from a player of that profile.

yea every player road is different - getting tendered ushl playing third - fourth line - zero PP time can hurt their development- some would be better staying u -16 playing 22 min - PP- keep developing but also having fun -

I think he had the upside to be like Boisvert, but he hasn’t developed since being tendered like Boisvert did. Doubt he goes anywhere near where Desnoyers and Guite do. He’ll be lucky to be a third rounder.

There isn't a new rule yet.

He doesn't intend to play for BU....remains to be seen what college he commits to.

Since he's in his draft year, I think it's probably not all that likely he hits college.

The Gophers would absolutely love to have the two Sawchyn brothers but of course if they play college they'll surely end up at DU.

When he announced his commitment it was for 2025 and I noticed recently on Elite Prospects that his BU debut was now for 2026-2027.

great plays / ushl might be in big trouble i still think . ushl coach’s think they had a monopoly of high end kids that want to play college hockey so kids didn’t have a choice . so maybe youngstown coach never used him in right position or not a great fit now kids can have options to the CHL .

plus lot of ushl arena - area can’t compete with lot CHL arena , fan base and support . Youngtown for example is not great area, arena really never packed , can’t compete with good CHL team ! i’m American too lol

In Morin's case, Saint John might have been the best place for him.

They are currently playing an all-17 year-old 2nd line and a 3rd line with a 17 and 2 16s.

Winning and losing is completely secondary where an 0-64 season with guys developing well would be more of a success than a 64-0 where the team only plays older kids.

Having Peddle, Mateiko, Mann and Tivey as older guys who can play allows them to be competitive and play the kids a lot (Yared, Rozzi, Beveridge, Groulx, Dube, Amyot, Duhamel and Morin)
