C/W Marat Khusnutdinov (2020, 37th, MIN)

Yes he was. 58th overall.

Khusnutdinov is very young for his draft year and improved quite a bit as the year went on. His defensive ability, work-ethic, and passing are extremely impressive for his age. His numbers aren't great, but context matters here; he got little PP time, especially in the beginning of the year, doesn't get prime playing time, and got 23 pts in his last 19 games.

Even so, a Pageau type player would still be a great pick in the mid-late 1st and a steal outside of there. And I think his ceiling is higher than that.

Thanks - missed the ranking.

And if he turns into Pageau, totally agree. It's just that is 'upside' not relative to risk. Not too many small Russian centers end up being your checking line center, mostly because they can typically get a decent contract back home in the top 6 in their 20's, versus put a few years in the AHL. But it could happen. Looks like a nice player for sure.

I agree, but I think he could also become a better player than Pageau. Think a real solid 2C. That's why I have him in my 1st round.

That's definitely his best asset. But do you see him as an exceptional talent overall? What role do you think he'll play, for example, in the russian national teams going forward?

Exceptional is someone like Svechnikov and here I don't see it. I like his skating, it is among the top of the draft for sure, also he is very good with the puck and works hard and plays a two-way game. But I also have my concerns about him, for example, he is a small center, which makes it harder, although he is not weak. Also so far I don't have an impression of his game as having enough structure, I'm not sure it will work that good outside of the junior level.

I've seen him listed 5'11" at some places. Regardless, he's basically Brayden Point's size so I wouldn't call it a deterrent.

NHL Central Scouting has Khusnutdinov listed at 5'11" and 176 lbs. Your report says he's 5'9" and 165 lbs. That's an important difference.

Yeah, that 3 inches and 11 pounds is a pretty big difference. I’ve like what I’ve seen from him, but if 5’9” is accurate I wouldn’t be interested as a Jets fan. If it’s 5’11” then maybe I could see him becoming an effective centre in the NHL

I don't buy 5'11 at all.
It's my understanding that they actually measure heights and weights as part of their service to NHL teams. Looking through their heights and weights over the years, they are usually very close to the combine measurements. I think I'd trust their information unless someone can show persuasive evidence that contradicts.

Totally fell in love with this prospect, he’s so dynamic, fluid, he’s got that second gear even tho he’s on the small side! Oh man i hope he could be a 2nd round pick for Montreal!

I'm hoping the Canes take him at #19. I see a lot of Aho in his game and they love defensive forwards who compete. He'd be a nice playmaker to center Svechnikov if he keeps developing.

Does anyone have any data on him playing on North American ice? Does it affect his scoring?

If you mean the rink size, then SKA-1946 home arena uses North American sized rink.

Yes I meant ice size. Thank you for the info. I think this only helps his case. If he interviewed well somewhere maybe he surprises the hockey world and goes in the top 10 (like Scheifele, Wheeler etc).

He should. I'd love for the Hawks to do it.

I am curious about this though, because I have not been able to find a single interview with the guy. If anyone knows of one, please link it to me. I know he's often been captain or assistant captain on the teams he has played for so it's fair to say he's got good leadership qualities, but I've never seen him interviewed.

I'm also curious if he has any interest in playing for the Otters next season.
