Now 3rd in 18-year old season scoring by raw point totals and up to 6th in both best goals per game and points per game. There are some very good players who've been in that neighborhood -

Would you have traded him for Chychrun? That's who I believe Arizona wanted.

I'd have offered this year's first and next year's first. Kulich has the sort of inside game that one simply does not trade until you see what he is when he's done cooking.

They wanted our prospects not our picks though. Just seeing what your thoughts were on possibly losing him.

Personally, he's nearly untouchable. He brings a lot of what our team/prospects don't currently have. I mean, if the Rangers were trading Fox or Sheshterkin.....sure. But aside from pipe dream scenarios, he's a guy I want as a Sabre long-term.

They also wanted something else from Ottawa but came back the Monday before to work out a deal. Teams don't move recent top-end prospects often. Kulich at 28 is the 2022 version of Point at 79OA or Aho at 35OA IMO. Plenty of teams I'm sure are kicking themselves today because of it.

I really think he is the Aho of this past draft. Just a natural scorer with skill and moxie out the ass

You can’t give up Kulich in a trade for Chychrun. It would have to be a part of a deal for a similar type of D. If there was a package you could put together for a young D on his ELC that you believe is the real deal…then you can talk Kulich. Then you can talk a lot of players. That’s not what Arizona was holding…and that’s why they didn’t get a player like Kulich back.

Even a higher first rounder like Ottawa’s will be in this “better” draft isn’t worth Kulich because things happen since then. Would you trade Kulich for the player taken 15th in this past draft? No one would. Drafts are crapshoots that we appear to have won big on at pick 28. Which means a bunch of teams got it wrong before then. Which is why picks aren’t worth as much as players who prove something after the pick. Could Arizona’s player drafted with Ottawa’s pick end up better than Kulich? Of course. Would you want to bet on the mystery box when you’ve seen Kulich at 18 in the AHL? I sure wouldn’t

I wish! I’m very high on Kulich since the draft but I’m not sure he’ll have their level of impact.

Interesting question is if CBJ would make Jireck available for him.

It's the idea of it that just because a player was selected somewhere does not cement their future potential because of the difference in growth after selection.

And because teams just get things wrong in the draft process to begin with. The shock to me isn’t that Kulich is good…it’s that he was there at 28. Whatever reason kept teams low on him….whether it be the scoring in a Czech mens league that deflates everyone…or that they coveted a different high end skill than shot…we talked about them getting it wrong on draft night.

I've compared the 2022 draft to righting the wrongs of the 2015 draft. If Kulich can become that draft's Aho...what coulda/shoulda been our pick then...that will make the comparison even more sweet.
