Love Nathan Gerbe, cause how could you not. However, I still would not build a team with him in my lineup, due to his size and what is limits.

I am hoping Savoie can grow into something like Derek Roy. Roy was 5'8" but 187 lbs. He was built thicker like a bigger man, with some shorter bones.
Nathan Gerbe's talent was immense, and he was strong as an ox for his height. But at 5'4", you really are stretching the limits of being an NHL player. Gerbe used the long stick to get some edge and lots of other tricks, but really he was beyond challenged height-wise. I believe if Nathan Gerbe was even 5'9", he would have been an NHL star, almost for sure. His drive and ambition were crazy, and he did have high-level talent. He had 400-plus games, as it was. I am in awe of Gerbe's career and always will be.

Because I figure the other two players won’t try to pass to him so much this year, and the team will take a step back offensively to instead tighten up defensively.
I think you're ultimately right. My optimistic side tells me that all 3 have always passed well together but none were ever a dedicated distributor anyway.

Probably see less Sabre odd man rushes but they were such an aggressive team until they set up in the D zone. Then they weren't really cautious or aggressive. It will be interesting to see if DG can still accentuate team speed while playing more sound team defense. It's my biggest question going into next season.

Depends on what we do with Olofsson. As long as VO remains on the roster, his chances to make the team remain unchanged to me (low-to-none).

If VO is traded.......then I think Savoie gets a 9 gamer at the least.
They're not going to create Mitts - VO line again, are they? :sarcasm:

I think he absolutely gets 9 games unless he absolutely falters in training camp which I don’t see happening ,

I want him to make the team but I also don’t wanna rush him and if he simply isn’t ready then yes send him back to the WHL and play a full season with Zach Benson now that both of them will be playing together for the long hall .

Rousek is more than capable of playing on that 3rd line until Quinn is healthy and Kulich is knocking on the door but definitely needs at least half of next season in the AHL and become a point per game player.

My hope is Savoie makes the team as a top 9 forward

Do people legitimately think Savoie makes this team now with Quinn out to start the season
It doesn't depend on anyone else. If Savoie shows up and forces their hand, he'll be on the team. I assure you that the front office and coaching staff would not allow VO or Jost to block Savoie.

I think that he will get a chance to, yes. Sending him back last year was 50/50 to me. He didn't look out of place, but guys were still shedding summer league and maybe not on him as hard as they could have been. Personally I hope he sticks.

With Adams basically saying they were looking to add a UFA forward, I think that they are content to not burning an ELC year on both Kulich and Savoie. 9 games for Savoie sounds right, with JQ being injured. Kulich can get 9 games, Rousek can get a bunch and maybe Biro+Murray a few.

If the plan is 24/25 add Savoie and Kulich and Benson and Rousek full time it explains the 1 year deals for ZG and Jost.

24/25
Skinner TT Tuch
Peterka Cozens Quinn
Kulich Mitts Greenway
Benson Krebs Savoie
Rousek

Not all 4 of those will be ready in 24/25 for full time roles. Kulich, yeah probably. Rousek, yeah probably. But my bet would be on Savoie in Rochester to begin 24/25 and then Benson either back to Wentachee or in Rochester if he qualifies.

For 24/25? All four are ready. For 23/24 None probably are but someone will make it if only for 9 games and camp/preseason will determine that. My guess is Benson. and then the Roch conditioning stint then some junior tourney and then I don't know. Somehow more recon in Roch lol.

Maybe. Maybe not. I still don't think Kulich's game in his own zone is as good as Savoie, Benson, or Rosen's for that matter and that is going to hold him back from being first. Of the group, Savoie seems like the one who ended the year closer of the two of 'em.

24. Matt Savoie, C/RW, 19 (Buffalo Sabres — No. 9, 2022)

Savoie’s game has the potential to thrill. He’s got extremely quick side-to-side hands that help him beat defenders one-on-one off of cuts. He’s got an NHL shot (which he can place with pinpoint accuracy from a bad angle and rip by a goalie clean from a distance, but he also loves to change up and slide five-hole). He does an excellent job creating plays to the slot out of traffic. He’s a burning skater with explosiveness and quick three-step acceleration that allows him to win races, separate in transition and put defenders onto their heels, or dash through holes in coverage to the net (or draw a penalty). He’s a soft, small-area passer who blends deception into his movements.

And then on top of those things, he’s got a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He’s always engaged, he keeps his feet moving, he plays with a ton of energy, and he finishes all of his checks and knocks his fair share of players over despite being on the smaller side. He’s also sturdier on his feet than his listed height (5-foot-9) might suggest, which helps him play between checks.

It was nice to see him really pop as the second-leading scorer to Stankoven in the WHL playoffs this spring. I’m a believer in him becoming a high-tempo, top-six, goal-creation type. He’s an exciting talent, with clear PP1 upside due to his shooting/skill package and clear five-on-five upside because of his skating and motor. Even in games where the points don’t fall, he’s almost always dangerous and threatening on the ice — and he’s seldom going to leave you wanting more. His speed might even make him a useful penalty killer to give him all-situations value as well. I’m looking forward to watching him as a big part of Team Canada at the 2024 world juniors in Gothenburg.

Do people feel Matthew Savoie will get the Shane Wright treatment if he doesn’t make the team but I think it’s a forgone conclusion he get a long look to potentially fill in for Quinn. (No Guarantee but I will be surprised if he doesn’t )

He will practise with the club for the first 2 months , dress for 8 games and then go play at the World Juniors then either gets traded or goes back to Winnipeg after the world juniors are over .
