Not a shock to me! I laughed at everyone who was saying Patrick was some big disappointment and how guys like Pettersson and Heiskanan were superior players because they dominated vastly inferior competition!
Patrick’s whopping 5 goals look elite right now.

Yeah...it's been said before that him finishing the year healthy and being able to train all summer will be huge for him.

I just don't think people realize that all last year he played with a hernia so could not push himself. Then had off season surgery and could not train all summer.

He essentially has not been able to train hard in 1.5 years. THAT MATTERS.

If he does not have a big uptick next year...like Ghost and Giroux did this year...then there is reason for concern. Until next year, he is playing below 100% because only "time" can fix his issues right now.

I think this is kind of (for the most part) how I feel about Patrick's situation:

NHL NEWS: A.H.L stands for what? (Aww Hell, Let's keep him up) Nolan Patrick, Jake Virtatanen and how prospect development is at an all time low.

If you don't want to read the article, it's point is basically this, The NHL is no place for a rookie to get his sea legs back, if he wasn't at 100% he shouldn't have been with the Flyers

Why did Hetall keep him up? It makes no sense,

and your GM isn't named Bergevin so stupidity shouldn't be an issue for you

Ok, I read it.

First point, who the hell is Donal Finn.
Second point, why should his opinion be valued?

This is a blog that anyone could write. Is this guy a 10 year old? Do tell.

And Jake Virtanen, he went back to Jr in his draft+1 season. Plus, he was barely a PPG player in Jr. Patrick was a PPG player at aged 16. How is he relevant at all?

Why did he stay up with the Flyers? Because he was one of the 12 best forwards, and for the first part of the season he was completely holding his own. Then he got a concussion and struggled for a couple months. For the last few weeks, he's been one of the Flyers' best forwards and got bumped up to the 2nd line as a reward, which tends to disprove the thesis of the article.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with a young guy figuring out his game in the NHL, struggling at times, and working through it. Not everyone is McDavid or Matthews, and in fact, there are very few of those guys. My memory goes back a long way, so I well remember the consternation that at times surrounded the rookie seasons of guys like Thornton, Lecavalier, Stamkos, etc. They ended up doing just fine.

What's important is not that a guy comes in and produces right away, but that he can hang and get better game by game. Patrick is doing that right now. It wouldn't at all surprise me to see him finish the year strong, become a permanent fixture at 2C, and put up something like 10 goals and 25 points, which to me would be a successful rookie season.

What would Flyers fans say is his best asset?

He does have some nice flow.

Aside from that, I feel like his best asset so far has been his ability to see the ice and passing, he's had a few really sexy saucers, but there are a lot of components to his game that are still developing, and eventually he's going to be a pretty damned complete player.

He hasn't been able to really flash it, because he's been struggling to create space for himself, but his shot should eventually be pretty lethal once he figures out how to buy himself space.

He's going to be monster along the walls and in tight, eventually. It's just not there yet because he's teenager who's missed a lot of development time and he loses those physical battles more often then he wins them, but he's starting to dictate play there more and more often.

He's very solid defensively for a 19 yo skill forward and will get better over time as he becomes stronger. He still struggles with positioning in the offensive zone. There are times when instead of getting open he's right on top of a linemate.

His skating can be a bit labored in the beginning but it's NHL quality when he gets up to speed. He could definitely use a little more work there, though.

Still hasn't showcased his shot very much. That should increase his scoring more.

Patrick really is one of those scenarios where I wish there was an AHL exception. If he were European I have little doubt he would've started the year in the AHL. There was minimal benefit in sending him back to the WHL, so as a Canadian Jr player he is stuck playing a limited role in the NHL on a decent team.

I don't think anyone expected him to be a walk on 1st line player, but there certainly are other teams/scenarios he could have landed on where he'd be handed top 6 forward minutes.

There year is a kind of a pass. I hope he finishes up with 10 goals ~25pts. Less and I'd be disappointed. Konecny had 11/17/28 in 70 GP last year which is my gauge. He is more capable of moving around the line up than Patrick so being on par would be fair.

First point, who the hell is Donal Finn.
Second point, why should his opinion be valued?

This is a blog that anyone could write. Is this guy a 10 year old? Do tell. But here is what I do know by reading this, he says:

"Asking a draft pick to play his way back from injury in the NHL is insane. Patrick should be in Junior this year, getting his game and scoring touch locked in. Then next year he should be in the AHL where either prospect or AHL career playmakers will be waiting for him to learn to score in that League as well.

THEN the year after next, Patrick should be stepping onto NHL ice, ready to DOMINATE."

So this person who you want everyone to believe, does not even know that Patrick CAN'T be in the AHL next year. Hmmm...maybe this persons opinion is not worth very much.

And Jake Virtanen, he went back to Jr in his draft+1 season. Plus, he was barely a PPG player in Jr. Patrick was a PPG player at aged 16. How is he relevant at all?

If you are going to bring some info, bring something better than a blog from a nobody that does not even know the rules. And if you wrote that blog, sorry for being so harsh, but it's garbage.
Quite positive Nolan is AHL eligible next year as he is a late birthday(Sept 18 1998) and had he played junior this year it would have been his 4th junior season.

So if you’re going to bring some info, make sure it’s right!

agreed...teams seem to rush prospects...I see it way too much in the business...so many players who could have turned out to be great prospects just were not handled properly...im not sure why Patrick was never sent to play in the World Juniors? Why they would not want to give him a tournament he could have got confidence in and be an important cog to the team.

I would say this kid should have been drafted 7th, not saying he's a bust, but I think that scouts put him at 2 because he was at number 1 at the start of the year. Didn't fall hard enough IMO.

Nobody behind him has done nearly enough to justify this yet. Patrick’s coming off an injury and if you look beyond his basic stats - which are still fine and heavily affected by the trash usage and linemates he has received up until late - he is one of Philly’s top players already. Others might surpass him eventually, but he goes #2 if the draft happens today, again.

You will get an argument from some fans who see overseas success as more impressive than actually playing in the NHL and improving slowly. I agree with you but some posters have been fairly outspoken on this issue. Only time will tell but I’m not buying that Patrick was picked where he was because he entered the season ranked highly. Teams scout these top players very closely. Philly liked him better than all other choices. Given what is known now about his medical history I’m skeptical they choose differently if faced with it again. Let’s see how next season unfolds for him but he has at least held up since returning from injury and improved with experience. Not bad for a teenager coming off surgery.

, he was 1 or 2, because he's good. He's almost the ideal centreman GM's envision one to me. Big, grit, toughness, offensive, good shot, creativity, talent, smart who doesn't want one of those? at most he will maybe be 3, no less. He's going to be a good one for Philly if he stays healthy.
