Shero today in picking Nico

"In the end, I told (director of amateur scouting) Paul Castron that whatever was going to come our way, I didn't want to leave the draft without Nico Hischier," Shero said. "That became more apparent to me in the end. To me there was nothing else that made any sense that would guarantee that Nico would be on our team."

So it seems it was Nico all the way and Shero did not want to trade the pick.

Besides being a very talented player, he seems to be a very nice person too. Wish him all the best and a good career!

Hischier will be great for Swiss Hockey also. I am lucky enough to have visited beautiful Switzerland, Zurich which is right beside Kloten, 2 teams in NLA. I always thought the Swiss would one day be a growing hockey power. Perhaps we will see start to see more players drafted there now that Hischier went #1 overall.

Unless he's brutal, he'll be with the big club.

This guy is just so dynamic with everytning he does AND defensively responsible. Exactly what we need up front. Our GM and Coach already think of him as a franchise player.

Exciting times ahead with what we have now in our pipeline up front

Switzerland IS a growing hockey power. 20 years ago Swiss players weren't even drafted. In two short decades we now have a #1 (only 7 1stOAs ever were not NA players, by the way), alongside other 1st rounders.

I'd think he'd be a clear 3rd behind Svechnikov and Dahlin. Other guys may make the jump this year, but he's way more proven than pretty much everyone else with just as high-upside.

Alright cool was curious. Much can change obviously but was wondering where he would stand. The guy the Leafs picked was ranked second and Nico wasn't in the top 10 in Mckenzie's preseason rankings. Crazy that the "Nolan Patrick draft" was overtaken by someone who was supposed to be taken midround at the start of the year. I don't recall a first overall rising like that before. Even in my Fantasy League I said if I had first overall I'd take Nico. I like taking the guy who is rising that quickly.

I thought at the time McKenzie's rankings were weird. I always thought Nico was top 10. It seems like scouts overreacted to a sub-par Hlinka. He was always in HockeyProspects.com top 10.

I even said in the summer of 2016 I thought he was a sleeper with a chance of going 1OA if he played up to the level of previous big name imports in Halifax. Although, I fully thought Patrick had this draft in the bag until at least March/April. I finally switched fully to Nico being the best option in late May/early June. But, it was by a margin of like 50.1% for Nico, 49.9% for Patrick.

As for a crazy riser going 1st. The biggest one ever is probably Jovanovski. Patrick Kane and Erik Johnson were also huge risers. It's hard to really pinpoint because the draft wasn't covered as in-depth until the 2010's. On top of that TSN has basically purged their articles prior to 2014.

Good post, you always want to take the guy that's been trending up rather than the one who is stagnant. Right now Patrick may be a better overall player, but Nico has a lot more potential. Especially offensively.

Not trying to be a weiner or anything, just wondering if someone could give me the rundown on why this kid looks like a #1C?

I see the skating and the hands.

I’ve only seen 2-3 live games this year of him.

Looking at pt production, it’s not overly impressive for a first overall pick.

Before a wrist injury he had 37 goals in 45 games and almost single handedly took down the WJC champions. Elite hands, elite defense, elite skating, elite hockey sense.

Matthews mcdavid potential? Nope. 1c potential? Absolitely

Ah okay, I didn’t know about his wrist injury, thank you. That is some good production for sure :)

I also didn’t notice his defense, but I will look out for it in the future, thanks for your input.

Yea, but Jr stats are heavily influenced by the strength of your team and the strength of your competition. For example, everyone says MacKinnon was clear as day a much better performer in his draft year than Nico. I'd argue you can't definitively say so one way of the other because the teams were so different.

MacKinnon team GF 347 in 68 games
Nico team GF 229 in 68 games

Let's roughly adjust for player GP and team GF.

MacKinnon: (347/68)*44 GP = 224.51 GF opportunity
Nico: (229/68)*57 GP = 191.96 GF opportunity

% of team goals scored = PlayerG/GF opportunity approximation
Mack: 14.3%
Nico: 19.8%

% of goals influenced = PlayerP/GF opportunity approximation
Mack: 33.4%
Nico: 44.8%

44.8% is insane, by the way.

Note: I'm not trying to enter into a Nico vs MacKinnon debate in this thread, simply addressing the poster's question surrounding production.

No one is pegging him as a legit 1C. There are like 10-20 of those guys in the league, if that.

I could see him being a Logan Couture. 30 goals and a really good #2, not sure he'll develop into a true #1 though.

Thank you very much! That is a much different Halifax team indeed, it was noticeable in that regard. The end GF results are very staggering
