C Nick Cousins (2011, 68th, PHI)

Is he slow? I haven't seen any Soo games but at the Flyers prospect camp he appeared to have pretty good wheels.

I shouldn't say slow. I'm hard on his skating. The way you worded it is probably a good assessment...he has pretty good wheels. He's not a burner tho. Sometimes he looks slow but it's because he's smart about it. He's really efficient so he doesn't waste any extra strides. When he builds his strength up (i'd say give him 3 or 4 more years) and develops an Nhl body, he's going to be a very productive 2nd liner.

Better league? The Q will probably make it 3 memorial cup wins in a row this year, not really a week league

Nobody ever claimed it to be a week league. It goes from September to May just like the OHL and WHL, silly goose.

I watched him live tonight and he was probably the best player on the ice along with Laughton. He had a nice breakaway goal where he went backhand fivehole. His skating will need to improve for him to play his game in the nhl. As soon as he scored he skated right by Laughton and yelled in his face, he got booed everytime he touched the puck. I actually hate how effective he is on the ice, could be a solid player in a few years though.

Pro's: He's got some great hands. He's the kind of player that the puck just seems to be glued to his stick. He's got a high IQ. He's a pass first kinda guy. He is in the right place at the right time. He agitates. Remarkably resilient. I can't recall him ever missing a game to injury.

Con's: smallish, not physical at all. Slightly slow skater (yet really efficient).

I think he's going to have a long and successful NHL career as a second liner. Only after he fills out and gets stronger which'll likely be a few years down the road.

Thanks for the review.

Scott's not one to mess with but he can wait until training camp this summer. It will be nice to watch them here at the SkakeZone. Really nice to see Scott doing well after he left the big club. I also liked Mather's interview last night. What a big kid! I did not realize he was captain of the Pete's. If he can improve his skating he may have a shot in the NHL as a 4th liner stir the pot type with the Flyers. Good luck.

Wow, already making enemies with his future NHL teammates?

Hes the biggest aggitator in the OHL for sure. The entire crowd last night wanted to kill him lol it was amazing how effective he was. I don't get to see the soo often but he adressed some of his stride and skating issues i originally had.

Are they? After hearing about the Catenacci situation and the fact that Cousins isn't very popular in his own locker room, I cannot help but wonder how long this friendship will last.
They follow each other on twitter and Cousins tweeted this earlier this year:

Nick Cousins ‏@Cous27
Good luck to @Laughts21 in his first NHL game today vs Pittsburgh! @NHLFlyers

Not doubting that they're friends now, only wondering how long this friendship will last.

We actually ranked Nick Cousins ahead of Daniel Catenacci for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. You could see the potential in his offensive game, and it was enough to rank him fairly high. It's really nice to see him translate this at the OHL level.

Nick is the kinda guy you hate to play against, but like to have him on your team. There have been pests with far less talent than Cousins make the NHL so in that sense I think Nick is a pretty safe bet to be a regular in the NHL in a few years. I personally see him as a 3rd line forward who can frustrate the opposition and contribute a little offense but also a guy you can move around onto different lines and utilize as an agitator because he has the hands that will help him keep up with more talented players.

He's never really been a flashy guy. he's scored a couple real beauty highlight reelers this year, but he's not a flashy guy. It's his hockey sense and awareness of the play around him that makes him a good offensive guy along with his hands.

If there's one thing that hurts him, he has a bit of a short fuse when things don't go well. You can see him going down trying to draw penalties, see the referee's talking to him as he's trying to sell and he loses focus on the task at hand. While it's happening less, that would be really the only concern I have is that he will sometimes take himself out of the game by getting too frustrated once in a while.

Cousins has a lot of talent, easily enough to be a top six forward capable of putting up 60+ points in the NHL but his personality and on ice antics are so bad I'm not sure he'll ever make the show because of it.

I can't say I like the kid, a few years ago he dove twice and acted like he was unconscious in the ice, drawing two five minute majors. He then laughed about it and said acted like it was a good thing in his intermission interview.

He doesn't seem to be a case of hated by other teams liked by his own like Downie is. Quite a few cases of players who he didn't get along with, Dan Catenacci is a good example.

One thing of interest is that he does seem genuinely interested (allegedly) in maturing. Going with the Marchand comparison, not that I think he will be as good as Brad - Brad's attitude was just as **** in the juniours. So there is hope, whether or not it's just a glimmer of it remains to be seen I guess.

All charges against Cousins were dropped, providing he stays away from the accuser. Same goes for his teammates.

He'll be joining the Phantoms now.

Switching this up a little, but can he play wing effectively? The big club is kind of set down the middle and adding Laughton and Cousins to the mix complicates things a bit. I assume Laughton would be less effective on the wing because of the type of game he plays. Cousins sounds like a different type of player who could be effective as 3rd line winger.

Last time I checked he has 34 pts in 44 AHL games, not bad for a 21 year old.. Definitely think he has an NHL future. Flyers finally have some prospects...

It's even better when you see that his linemates are Andrew Gordon and Zack Stortini.
