C Nathan MacKinnon - Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL (2013 draft) II

MacKinnon also has the ability to simply blow by the opposition with his speed.

Not sure who I would compare him too, just making an observation.

This is true, but he has aspects of Forsberg in his game. He definitely has more speed and agility than Forsberg ever had but he has that power side to his game like Forsberg did.
 
Question: Do people think he's a slam dunk for the WJC even if there's a lockout and everyone is available? The #1 reason I'm looking forward to this tournament is the potential of seeing a lot of Nate Mack.

No 17 year old is a slam dunk for the WJC. People said that about Seguin after he absolutely blew away the OHL in the first part of the season.

If I was picking the team, lockout or none, Mackinnon would have to play himself off the team. But Prendergast is picking the selection camp, and he prefers older guys, and who knows what Steve Spott is looking for

If theres a lockout no one will be talking about Mackinnon at the WJC. RNH would be set up to have probably the best tourney ever. He's already played long portions of the NHL season at a PPG, just so far ahead of the other 19 year olds. He would be a dominant force at the Juniors...
 
If Pendergast is picking the team, he may have to swallow not picking a 19yo and go with the best forward not named Hubey or RNH... Assuming MacKinnon blows away the Q like I expect.

He should be getting a reputation for having his biggest games when it matters at this point. Hat trick today, the amazing playoffs he had this year, as well as a hat trick in the 3-2 final of the U-16 ACC a few years ago.

Funny, my comparable Peter Forsberg is the one Bob Mac just used for him.

He plays a lot like Taylor Hall and that is the position I expect him to play at the next level. I get his season opener tomorrow so I'll see if there is any change from last season.
 
Overtime winner for Nate Mac, solid on the draws as well, anyone see the game? Seems as if the goaltender kept Cape Breton in it.

I saw it, that is true. The Cape Breton goalie made a few awesome saves, including at least two huge ones I can remember against the MacKinnon line. It was my first time watching MacKinnon, I thought he was very good. Drouin was also very impressive, I'd say he had a better game than MacKinnon.

I was surprised by MacKinnon's physical play and a few strong forechecks.

Kovy is an accurate comparison, but Kovy's a winger. They make the same errors too
 
A relatively poor game from MacKinnon last night. Just didn't have the jump in his step he usually has. Looked pretty frustrated at times. He was one of the hardest hit by that flu bug, I wonder if he's still feeling the effects. Gotta love how he still manages to control the game through physicality, faceoffs and the OT winner despite not having his A game.

He had some chances but couldn't capitalized on Drouin's passes. On the other hand, Drouin played great and they complement each other really well. It could be the Yakupov-Galchenyuk duo of this year.

He didn't join practice until Wednesday and hadn't skated since the previous Thursday. I expect a full team healthy and all to show on Friday but not this weekend.
 
I commented earlier that something he needs to improve on re skating is the ability to adjust speed/the pace of the game. I recalled reading somewhere that people had said when he was at Hlinka that he seemed to have improved a bit in that sense.

I know it's still really early (Halifax has only played one game, no?) - but has anyone noticed that improvement. If not yet - maybe watch for it in the next while and report back anything of interest :laugh:

Will do. I'm not gonna look too closely into this weekend's games... He was very sick up until 1 day before our season opener and didn't looked himself (didn't reach top gear many times) on Friday. And he only played 1 pre-season game where he was barely trying.

I'm going to both games next weekend at home and my eyes are normally focused on him so I'll see what changes/improvements he's made with his skating and all-around play.
