The Sabres draft record would indicate their scouts are better than most teams at evaluating players, and I know for sure that they did their due diligence on Grigs. Time will tell is right, but I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of the reasons Grigorenko fell are pretty superficial.
It's possible that he'll come out as the best player in the entire draft... But to say that the reasons he fell are superficial isn't accurate. What we (the fans) heard is different than what the scouts themselves had access to. I really doubt that Grigo was not interviewed by the top 10 teams. I also am not sure if the Sabres had the chance to interview him since they probably didn't think they'd have a chance to pick him. When it comes to scouting or any type of recruitment, you have to go based on experience and character to determine potential. Without character, the person's potential may be limited.

All of this to say that I have no idea what Grigorenko is really like because I haven't sat down and interviewed him myself...

Almost all the teams interview the top prospects, even if they won't have a chance to pick them. I'm sure the Sabres did too. Even Yakupov had something like 27 or 28 interviews, I believe.

Exactly. You have to be prepared for anything. You never know when you're going to be able to move up, or someone you really like falls

They absolutely did. Buffalo was projecting to pick in the top 5 until February or March, and he was projected to be picked then. Then as the Sabres climbed in the standings, Grigs fell. Also, Regier and Devine spoke pretty candidly -- well, candidly for them -- about the time/effort they put in scouting Grigorenko in their post-draft interviews. Even Ruff had a bit of a hand in that pick (met with Roy before the draft).

Russia's best forward at the WJC imo.
Agreed. Not just the hands/shot/skill, but he's skating well, has been consistently involved in the play, and his passing and general decision making with the puck have been very good. If the draft was held again today, I'd be very surprised if he slipped to 12th overall, I feel like he's been proving critics wrong pretty well in both the Q and the WJC (I say this as someone who was a bit of a critic previously).

The talk about what teams should have taken him will probably never stop. Going forward, all that really matters though is that at 12, he was a crazy steal. You shouldn't be able to get a Grigorenko where Buffalo got him. For a team who's biggest weakness was far and away at center, what a friggen blessing. Knowing Buffalo's luck though, he'll probably have some freak injury end his career before the NHL starts back up again.

I havent really seen him play much but I remember he was ranked as high as 2nd in the pre draft rankings I believe? Why did he fall so much?
