You’re giving Detroit way too much credit for their drafting. Do you know how many defenseman Detroit has drafted in the past 25 YEARS who have hit the reasonable 30-point mark?? ONE. Niklas Kronwall. That was 17 years ago. Detroit hasn’t even managed to draft a top 3 defenseman of any variety in that time.
Quincey has a 30 point season.

And I don't know what a top 10 drafted forward has to do with Detroit's failure to land high-end d-men in what has been a grand total of zero top 15 drafted d-men in the last 25 years.

Rasmussen will be somewhere between David Steckel and Brian Boyle.

Detroit picked him in the top 10.

Gross.

There were better picks ? This is based on what ? The so called experts on hfboards.com ? All scouting sources and publishing sources had him going around the exact spot he was destined to go. The only people writing him off was the members here because he racked up most of his points on the power play ? I will never question a team like Detroit, when it comes to drafting. No they do miss some like everyone else , their track record says it all when it comes to drafting.

Based on me watching and the results from then till now and based on the scouting opinions of the same said scouts. Primarily his strengths and style of play are not what I wanted in that pick. His style is not one that I would've gone for in the top 10 given the other possible choices i listed out prior.

You don't question a team like Detroit because you may still be under the assumption that everything the wings have drafted turn to gold. You should know drafting hasn't been the same as it has been back then. We haven't been living in the golden years of drafting Datsyuk, Lidstrom et al in years. Mantha, Larkin are the new wave but many of our defensive prospects haven't been able to take control of the backend among other things.

I think he'll be much better than that, see him being around Bjugstad level and being an effective player in the NHL that has a lasting career. I mean I'm not saying I would've taken him in the top ten, for sure I'd consider him if I had a 21-30th overall pick.

See and this is what I'm saying with my prior statement. I think he'll be fine as an NHLer and heck would be nice to have that big body with deflection capabilities. But i didn't think he was worth a top 10 pick especially where other things were concerned like dmen or just offensive forwards with more emphasis on skill than size.

Thats a fair assessment, but I think people get too caught up in the term "top 10". Yeah he was a top 10 pick, but it was in a draft some people called historically weak (things can change but it does seem to be a disappointing draft). I would take a Bjugstad level player with that pick anytime although he always kills Detroit when they play so I probably overrate Bjugstad.

He's a lot closer to a JVR/Lee/Simmonds than he is to Boyle.

JVR and Lee are actually decent comparables from what I've seen, especially JVR. And hitting that level of play is a decent assessment as well. 60 points with a decent amount of goals.

People can complain all they want but he has a nose for the net. Pretty rare for someone to be on pace for 50 goals in their draft year. I know he didnt score that many because he missed a decent chunk of the season, but the list of guys who scored at that rate in their draft year is really good. A Boyle/Steckel comparison is laughable at this point in the game. Boyle is his low end potential (which is still a really good bottom 6 player)

He was on a 46 goal pace and this year is on a 40 goal pace. WHL only plays 72 games.

As long as he can stand in front of the net on a PP and be decent at it i'll be happy. Right now we use mantha there and I'm terrified that he's gonna take an off target slapper from frk one day and break an arm or his face or something. I'd rather sacrifice Rasmussen than Mantha, although ideally nobody would get hurt lol

I remembered reading he was on pace somewhere around 50 in his draft year but didnt go calculate it. Still, 46 goals in a persons draft year is pretty unheard of recently.

As for 40 goals this year, thats still a pretty good pace especially considering his assist pace has went up a decent amount. But he also returned from an injury that had him off for 6 months before the start to this season where he couldnt do much (if any) training in the offseason and has really been hitting his stride a bit more lately.

I wouldn't really call it unheard of recently. A bunch of guys have done it recently in the WHL and throughout the WHL. Since 2000, here's the list of guys who actually broke 45 goals. Shinkaruk in his draft -1 (but 17 year old season), Evander Kane, Nigel Dawes, Nic Petan, and Virtanen. That isn't really the most impressive group of players. Here's a full list.

Eliteprospects.com - All-Time Stats and Leaders from WHL

Throughout the rest of the CHL its fairly common. Tippett scored 44 goals in 60 games, in a league where the scoring is more transferable to the NHL. Nick Suzuki scored 45 in 65 games, Villardi scored at a 40 goal pace, Patrick scored at a 43 goal pace, Hischier scored at a 45 goal pace, Yamamoto scored at a 45 goal pace and so on. So I wouldn't really call it unheard of. Quite a few guys were on pace to do it last year.

I also don't think he was out 6 months. He took part in the NHL Combine in June and did work in the drills. His injury was only a 2 month or so injury, and I'm not aware of him having surgery or anything post draft. To the best of my knowledge, he also took part in your July Developmental camp and participated on ice.

Remember the last Wings' prospect that did this?

I didnt realize how many guys have been over 45 but not broke 50. I guess 50 is the magic number then, that list is a lot shorter and really good players are on it. As for the 6 month thing, his injury was in February I believe and it was a broken wrist. I'm sure he could skate after about 2 months or so, but that means he wasnt seeing any game action for about 6 months. He was held out of the contact and games if I remember right from the wings camp and didnt see game action for bascailly 6 months because of his injury. I'm sure that had an impact on his conditioning and not playing a game for 6 months would be a way to help you have a slow start.

Anyone know what's kept Rasmussen out of games this season? I thought I read the old upper-body-injury line a while back- and it seems like he's had an odd, in for a couple games then out for a couple games, pattern since then.

Yeah, he hasn’t been 100% since and has taken some games off. His wrist is bugging him.

Quoted from a poster on DRWs board:

Just did some napkin math on his season thus far:

He has 25 points in 19 games, and has missed 9 of the 28 games thus far. With a ballpark guess of staying healthy from here on out, and only resting/missing 3 more games for the year...

... He's on a 79 point pace. A big increase from 55 in 50 last year (and 43 in 63 the year before).

If that happened, I'd think that would make him a lock for starting next year in Grand Rapids. Should be interesting to see if the kid can keep it up in the WHL for now, and how his game translates to the next tier.

Not too snazzy.
