He has a Swiss passport so he could technically play in the NLA witout being counted as an import. Maybe not in his draft season this fall but maybe the year after that if he should be unsufficiently challanged in the CHL.

Was expected to play for Olten in the Swiss League, alongside fellow top prospect Brennan Othmann. Unfortunately got held up at the airport because of covid. It's a shame for the player. Turning pro while others can't play at all would have been huge for him. Hope it will work out but they're not very optimistic in Olten.

Damn. Bad luck.

I was obviously a bit tired when writing this. It reads as if he had covid. The way I understand the news, Swiss authorities said no to him playing in Switzerland because of the covid situation and because he doesn't have a Swiss passport.

Thanks for clarifying this, I was about to get Google on the case and find out some details.

I’m not sure his skating/playmaking is good enough to warrant a top 10 pick? Certainly not bad either account just not “next level”. Just from small sample sizes to me he has shades of a guy like Sean Monahan....good size, very crafty and high offensive zone IQ, dangerous and quick shot. Not a burner or high end naturally creative playmaker. But capable of creating his own offense.

Playing in Europe surely would help his skating. Hope it still works out for him. His Swiss playing license could help to make it happen.

How would it?

Ever watched a Swiss league game? It's a pro league but the lvl is nothing to rave about but pace is really high. It's a development League. Those players are still learning, their experience and skillset is still rough. But the one thing you get taught early as a kid is how to skate. If you can't skate, you're in trouble. On the wider European ice, you're gonna get beat non-stop.

Just because the pace is high that doesn't mean you will improve your mechanics or become a faster skater

Well. If it's true that skating is an issue then he'll have to find ways quickly to get up to speed. He'll have no choice but to fix it. Struggling in the Swiss League wouldn't help him in draft rankings.

Some aren't able to make those adjustments to higher pace and don't improve their skating, many actually. For every crazy Horvat like skating improvement there is Rob Schremp who just doesn't improve on it

I've almost forgotten about Schremp. Actually even played in Switzerland for SCL Tigers and scored quite a few points. Heinz Ehlers, Nikolaj's father, still let him sit in the press box quite a few times because he was just too slow. But I think he questioned Schremp's work ethic, too. In the end, Tigers terminated his contract early.

Don't know a lot about McTavish but if he's willing to put the work in I think playing for Olten's Swedish coaches and learning from playing with and against men could have helped him.

Fünfter EHCO-Sieg in Serie: Die Maschine kommt in Schwung

OHL start postponed so apparently Olten and Mason McTavish are once again trying to make it work. Player turns 18 on January 30th and him being a minor is why he wasn't allowed to board his flight during covid times. I'd like to think that he could get his work papers now and fly in already to be able to play in february the latest.

If this works, it will be interesting to see where he'll slot in because Olten already has by far the best Centers leaguewide. All four Centermen have NL experience and are still pretty much in their prime. Three of them are 2nd/3rd/4th on the team in scoring, right behind topscorer Garry Nunn. Nr.1 Center Knelsen has 20 points, Nr.2 Center Chiriaev 22 points and Nr.3 Center Fuhrer 19 points over 22 games. Those are excellent numbers. 4th line Center Rexha was out but just returned from injury so they don't really need another center They need wingers or defenders. Chiriaev is also pretty decent on the wing so if McTavish is lucky, he might get to play 2nd line with Chiriaev on his wing. So McTavish would get Chiriaev's spot and somebody to play with. My guess is that they're gonna keep the top line of Othmann and the two foreigners (Knelsen/Nunn) together unless they really shit the bed.

McTavish played mostly the wing last year as an OHL rookie, so that shouldn't be a problem for him.
