Take a look at Monahan. In his draft-eligible season, did you see an increase in points? No. Why? Quality of linemates were downgraded substantially. Just like Jankowski.

This is an awful comparison. Monahan had double the amount of points as the team's second leading scorer. He absolutely carried the team on his shoulders. And read the rest of my post, I acknowledge his quality of linemates. And yeah, the fact that he can't set himself apart from undrafted nobodies like Mauermann, Acciari, and Saracino (which is exactly what Monahan did last year) is pretty damn disappointing.

According to the Hockey News, Jankowski was re-ranked in survey having at least one scout from every team in the 1st round. Add the development time on top of this - he should command better than a 2nd.

Really depends on how you are looking at it. Stat-watchers will say this.

However, Jankowski moved from playing the wing last year to center (more defensive responsibilities), and moved away from Mauermann's line and onto a line with alternating wingers of the 'low-skill' variety.

The fact that he increased his goal production and points (though marginally - but the season is not quite over) is a very good sign.

Also, on top of this, Jankowski went from playing wing to Center.

It is really nice to see him not regress a bit given those circumstances. It is awesome to see him increase. Now notice that he plays in the dying minutes of games when the Friars are up by one, or down by one. That says quite a lot. Love his FO% too!

I think the most important thing when trying to scout a player is to see improvement in his game, and look at the whole picture before declaring someone's season as 'disappointing'. Did he light the world on fire? No. Given the over-all season, Jankowski took a nice step forward, and it was very nice to see his stats increase at the same time.

Jankowski didnt play with Mauerman last year. He played LW/RW centered by Tim Schaller last year and has been a center most of this year as Mauerman does, that he moved off the Mauerman line is a myth.

While its true Jankowski didn't move off the Mauermann line, its also true that Jankowski took a significant step forward in terms of face-offs, strength, speed and playing important minutes in a VERY defensive oriented system. He'll be just fine. While he seems to be a polarizing subject due to where he was drafted and Jay Feaster's draft day comments about him, I think its clear that he's getting a lot better, working very hard and still has a very good chance to be a very good NHL player, he simply has a unique combination of size, speed, vision and puck skills. He'll bloom later than many but I still see his potential as a 2nd line C in the NHL at 6'4 215 by the time he graduates with those skills....very intriguing.

How is that an awful comparison? What was my point? You actually just proved my point.

Not disappointed in Monahan's production his draft year? Why? Because you were aware of more of the background with regards to his season (and you volunteered on your own the fact that the next highest scoring player on the 67's was very far away in point production).

Now, why is Jankowski's season thus far disappointing? His quality of linemates did go down (as you also volunteered), but he also had a positional switch into center (which means more defensive responsibilities, and a very defensive-oriented team). Yet, his production actually has increased, but you feel that is disappointing?

Not sure how you can infer that comparison to be an 'awful' one. The whole premise of the comparison was to not blindly look at the stats, but actually to seek out more information to get as much of facts as possible behind a prospect.

However, "can't set himself apart from undrafted nobodies like Mauermann, Acciari and Saracino" - you do realize that these guys are all substantially older than Jankowski, right? Jankowski is a 1994 birth year, and Mauermann is a 1990, for instance. Difficult to directly compare players with disregard to their ages (not to mention disregarding where they were drafted from and their respective development arcs). Now that is an 'awful' comparison. Jankowski is still one of the youngest players in the NCAA - he is only 1 month older than Monahan. Be disappointed if he plateaus or regresses.

Mauermann (Harvey, Jankowski) PP
Army (Jankowski, Shamanski)
Jankowski (de Jersey, Harvey) PP
Army (Mauermann, Jankowski)
Hart (Jankowski)
Army (Schaller, Jankowski)
Mauermann (Jankowski)
Jankowski (Saracino)
Demopoulos (Jankowski, Schaller)
Demopoulos (Schaller, Jankowski)
Jankowski (Schaller, Demopoulos)
Saracino (Gilmour, Jankowski) PP
Hart (Jankowski, Parisi)

Only found 13 of his points from last season, but definitely does show it was NOT a myth. PP points where indicated. Jankowski did in fact play with both Mauermann and Schaller (amongst others). You can see he bounced around quite a bit throughout the lines.

I would actually really love a line breakdown in terms of %. Haven't been able to find one with some searching. Would be nice to get that breakdown from last season and this season, to be more assured that he did indeed drop in quality of linemates, but as you can see from the scoring summaries above, he did in fact play with Mauermann at least sometimes (and outside of the PP), and there are still missing points from last season (couldn't find all of them - though it is late and I am tired, but feel free to finish it).

Hard to tell on Providence. He was an excellent defensive centre who was 3rd ( or was it 2nd) on the team in scoring.

Problem is Providence does not score much.

He played center this year which is good and improved his offensive numbers. Providence is hardly an offensive powerhouse so Im not worried. Progression each year is what I am looking for.

What pace? He improved from last year. Next year he will improve again. But I do agree he is not turning heads or busting.
21% increase in point production. Almost doubled his goal totals. Is the top defensive centre on Providence and was named an all-star for his bracket in the NCAA tournament

If Jankowski turns out to be decent, how does Feaster's tenure look overall?

The drafting during his GMship was sensational. Pretty much all of the Flames best prospects were drafted while Feaster was in charge.

His trades weren't as good. I wouldn't call any disastrous. The RoR thing was potentially disastrous and is the only real blot on his record that I can see.

I really don't think he was nearly as bad as people seem to believe.

It's too early to call Feaster's draft picks sensational because very few of them are NHL regulars. The only NHL regular he has drafted so far is Monahan. It's great that some of them look good, but this is still TBD whether they were good picks or not.

The Bouwmeester trade is horribad and the Iginla trade was not good either. Probably two of the most important trades for the future of this franchise and he got some pretty mediocre/awful return on them both. And yeah, the ROR debacle was embarrassing and perfectly illustrates Feaster's tenure as a GM.

I really don't think he was nearly as bad as people seem to believe.
He was pretty bad. The good thing is he is no longer with our organization, and we no longer have to worry about him.

He was decent. His primary issues were poor trading (ranging from mediocre value in most trades to flat out poor value in the Iginla/JBo trades) and damage to the credibility of the franchise. He had a lot of bluster, and said a lot of stupid things that followed him around - he came off as arrogant and somewhat ignorant at times, and I think its impact on the way the Flames' management were viewed by both fans and other GMs was palpable.

That said, he did alright at digging Calgary out of the Daryl Sutter hole, and he formed a good basis of young prospects/players on which the rebuild could begin. He was a good short-term GM, but it's best for the franchise that he's gone, now.

I don't think Jankowski really hurts his draft record we can all be pretty happy with the stable of prospects he helped put in place.
and has been said before there is no way the League would validate the contract if they were going to enforce the waiver rules so I do not believe the RoR signing was as big a deal as people have made it out to be.
It was his trade record that really killed him being unwilling to hold onto any kind of salary, targeting weak prospects, burning bridges with other GMs if he had gotten Iginla to the Bruins for their package and gotten better pieces from St.Louis/Detroit for a top pair Dman he would still be our GM.

That said I still like the Janko pick; it was a ballsy move after years of safety and we're only "disappointed" because he's producing like a 25-35 pick instead of a top 5 guy.

Jankowski will be interesting to watch...but it's hard to swallow the fact that we could have had Hertl had we drafted at 14, or still after making the trade we could have drafted Maatta + Sieloff instead of Jankowski + Sieloff.

Here's a quote from his Providence coach. Article is here: http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=708966

"He's playing, if not the most, the second most minutes on our team consistently," head coach Nate Leaman told CalgaryFlames.com recently. "Every night, he's playing in every situation. He's pretty much out at the last minute of the game, whether we're up by a goal or down by a goal.

"I think that speaks a lot to just how much he's developed his game as a centreman and learning to play a complete game at this level."

Career Points- 43 over 2 years in 73 games. 25 points this year in a 39 game season. So now he is scoring .64 ppg vs .53 ppg. Are those the numbers that prove he is a quality first round pick?

Sabres fan here, we traded up for your pick and took Girgensons, the future captain of the Sabres. Unless Jankowski really comes along, it was a mistake not taking Girgensons.

I love when people look at points and nothing else. Numbers alone prove nothing.

Plus, I've seen him play. I think calling him the teams best defensive forward might imply the wrong label.

But he was most definitely the teams best all-situation forward. He may not be a huge scorer but he was excellent on the faceoffs, battled well for the puck in the gritty areas, and has some soft hands to compliment his strong size and skating. I wouldn't call him a gritty player but he has the size to protect the puck well. Not flashy in any area, but has size, skill, skating. The combination is what have many interested what he can do in the future.

It is hard to project NCAA players into the NHL but what I can say is that Jankowski has all the tools to become a solid pro player. You just need to massage him slowly into the pros so he can adjust to the speeds.

And what if Sieloff becomes something? He is apart of that equation too.

I wish there was a way to thank posts on here.
