I don't get all the "he's only criticized because Calgary picked him" comments. There were plenty of people freaking out about him potentially going in the first before the draft even started. Maybe some more piled on when the Flames ended up being the team to pick him, and there was real belief from a lot of people he would have been available a little later still, but the attacks don't have much to do with Calgary. Just look at some of the threads where Button ranked Jankowski as high as 14.

i think todd button who is the flames head scout told his brother craig so he put Jankowski at 14 where the flames were originally gonna draft

that might be true - but you also have a "volume" issue when it comes to where a lot of people who post here are from (Canada!)....and the truth of the matter is that the fans of the various Canadian teams love nothing more than trolling each other.

it might well have been if, say, the Stars had picked Jankowski at 13, or the Sharks had picked him at 17, or the lightning had picked him at 19 the "jankowski selection" would have been surprising - but if any of those teams had picked him at those slots there's NO WAY people would still be banging on about it in they way they are right now.

Much of this whole Jankowski "meme" has to do with Feaster stating he'd be "possibly the best player from the draft 10 years from now". The fact he got drafted by a Canadian team that has been an easy target over the last few years has helped add fuel to the fire.

In reality Jankowski is an interesting and risky prospect with a ton of upside and a lot of questions that may be answered this year. It will be best to just wait and see how he does as this whole Jankowski meme has really become dated.

Also the fact that the drafted a kid playing high school hockey at 21 was funny to me

Makes me think of the Canucks drafting Patrick White in the 1st round:shakehead

It always risky drafting a highschool player. But hey, most people would have drafted Wayne Gretsky in grade school if they could have...

TJ Oshie was taken at 24 in 2005 when he was still in high school. He turned out alright.

Yup. Being in HS leagues doesn't automatically mean a subpar draftee; it just means they're harder to project and generally younger (Jankowski is the youngest player ever drafted, IIRC).

He was expected to be a third round pick was he not? Or a second rounder. Definitely not a 1st round pick anyways, hence all the jokes.

Brendan Smith and Joey Hishon were considered pretty big reaches and they turned out to be great picks. Its too bad about Hishons head though

Kreider too.

I think his reference to "21" was re Jankowski's draft position, not his age.

Nick Leddy was drafted out of high school - he was taken 16 overall.

Gardiner and McDonagh too.

So was Stepan.

I'm not putting Jankowski down or anything but the difference between Jankowski playing in high school and these guys is that, from my understanding, the level of hockey Jank was playing was not as strong at all.

A large number of U.S. prospects are drafted out of high school. The fact Jankowski was drafted in the first round after playing in Canadian high school (rather than Jr.) is what makes him an intriguing prospect.

The circumstances behind that are well documented. He was 5'8" at 15-16 and has grown almost 8 inches (i believe he measured at just under 6'3'' at Providence) and he is still growing. He is nearly a year younger than Nail Yakupov and has just really started to develop into his body. He will be a prospect in which a lot of patience will be needed but the talent is there.

Its not often a player who turned 18 last month is on the top line of a US college team. He is being challenged and is currently producing, which is nothing but a promising sign for flames fans.

Well, no, draft-eligible players are in a specific age range, so the youngest can only be as young as the last day of that range.

Curtis Gedig, as an example, was younger when he was drafted.
