NRD definitely has connections somewhere within the league. Although still anonymous he has been the first to report a ton of stuff the past couple years
He's also a massive rangers fan and cries when you call his team out

Personally, I have Eklund 3rd on my board and on my mock, but I consider him a prospect of equivalent level to Power and Beniers. It is his absence during international competitions that makes me rank 3rd. Can Buffalo take it as # 1 or will they go down in your opinion?

I can't speak to the validity of that rumor at all. Eklund wouldn't be my pick at #1, but I could definitely see where it makes some sense for Buffalo.

Development has been an issue. Even can't-miss prospects like Reinhart and Dahlin have stuttered at times in development (although I'm a believer in both players), and they've really struggled to integrated later round picks outside of Olofsson. Eklund strikes me as pretty bright and pretty well-rounded. I think if you leave him in Djurgardens another year and he stays healthy and performs well, he's probably in pretty good shape. Not every team can afford to swing for the fences with these picks, and I could see where the "safety" of a pick like Eklund could appeal to Buffalo.

Further, I think Eklund is a versatile enough prospect where there aren't really concerns about fit in a system. He's bright in controlled 5v5 play, he's been good in transition this year, he's a pretty tenacious defender. For a team like Buffalo who has mowed through like half of the coaches and GMs in the league, I can see where that versatility has a lot of value. If some of the Eichel/Reinhart/Risto rumors are true, there will likely be pretty significant roster turnover in the coming years. In that case, a versatile player like Eklund is probably a reasonably safe bet to make it through the storm.

I'm not a big believer in Kevyn Adams as Sabres GM. But with so much personnel turnover going on, I can see where Eklund makes a lot of sense. I think the same is true for players like Power and Beniers to an extent, but it's a close race this year and the Sabres taking Eklund at #1 would be a pretty justifiable move in my eyes.

Buffalo hasn't gotten around to interviewing Owen Power yet.

Pure conjecture and a what-if scenario, but what if that is because Eklund is their guy and they pass over on Power with the first overall? I think that's the kind of move that signifies they're for sure trading for another top 10 pick.

Also poor Eklund in this case, going #1 to Buffalo almost guarantees he's rushed to the NHL despite needing 1+ years in Sweden putting on another 10 to 15lbs of muscle.

Yeah the decision not to interview Power by this point was a head-scratcher to me too. Maybe there's more red tape than I'm aware of, but it seems pretty straightforward to reach out to Power's camp and at least get a quick Zoom meeting in. My only thought was that maybe Buffalo wanted Granato on board full-time before interviewing Power, but I'm not quite sure what's going on there.

It'll be interesting to see if they move back into the top 10, that might give some clarity to these rumors. If they do take Eklund I really hope they give him another year in Sweden.

Yes he is pretty arrogant at times but it still doesnt take away the fact that he has connections
agreed. still always dreaded when he tweeted about the isles because it always boded negatively. gonna say that what he did say "eklund likely being w/buffalo" does feel like its grounded in at least some reality. Buffalo does need to get themselves offense, they do need talented players, and eklund is absolutely a talented player who can potentially play on the side of eichel. who knows what happens but i feel more confident at saying Eklund goes 1st overall because of this. If not? They get him later via a trade

Eklund has said before that the plan has been to stay in Sweden for another year. But I too would make sure to get it out there if I thought it could scare Buffalo off from drafting me lol. Feel bad for their fans what a mess of a franchise.

But if he ends up there it would obviously be very cool if he could play a big part in turning that team around

i think thats the case for every single prospect now

This is my pure speculation here: With the Eichel trade looming I think Kevyn Adams is under the gun to find an NHL ready prospect this draft. The 3 that probably fit that bill are Beniers (who starts out as a 3rd/4th line guy) Power, and Eklund (who probably would start as a 2nd/3rd line guy). Buffalo is an organization that doesn't let it's top prospects cook too long.

I doubt that impacts Buffalo picking one of them but I don't think they'll be happy with their #1 overall pick staying out of the league for a season either.

Its a sad situation but buffalo fans need to know that they're in a very precarious situation. It has to hurt but its better to keep them away from the fire than throw them into it right away

Buffalo should go for more experienced players in an Eichel/Reinhart trade in an effort to turn it around. Spare the kids some suffering, also difficult for a young prospect to come in like that and deliver
