C/LW Pavel Zacha - Sarnia Sting, OHL (2015, 6th, NJD)

I feel like the 03 draft is slightly overrated. 5 years ago, of course it looked great. But since then, the majority of top talent from that draft has fallen off a cliff. Of course there are still stars, but one wonders about the staying power of that draft as a whole, especially when compared to the 79 draft year that was oozing Hall of Fame talent. I don't know that there is a lot of that in the 03 class

Maybe it has something to do with players aging?

Zacha with back to back 3 point games, now has 13 points in his last 7 games. This board is going to be eating a lot of crow in a few years.

Still.. the Rangers picked the only complete bust in the 1st round filled with NHL all-stars. A guy it took 7 years to make his NHL debut which lasted a grand total of 2 games and 0s across the board (he did get into an NHL fight though!).

Comparing Zacha to Jessiman is a complete and total farce. Zacha arguably already has as good an NHL career as Jessiman.. and he hasn't even played in the NHL yet

Is krejci his ceiling? Or more prime zajac?

I think he's going to be a power winger in the NHL, so I'm not sure either would be an appropriate comparison. I don't watch the Bruins all that often but my sense is that Krejci is way more creative than Zacha will ever be. Zajac is good at all the little details that pretty much go unnoticed and I'm not sure that's Zacha future either. On the positive side, Zacha has a shot that I think is probably already the best of the three, especially the snapper that he gets off lightning fast.

Personally, I see him as a 30-25-55 LW with a mean streak, although I hope he can get the undisciplined penalties under control.

People really overate what quality of players you can typically get with a "top 10 pick". http://www2.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/story/?id=455673

Zacha was picked for his physical tools because he was considered a very safe bet to be an NHL player. There were flashier forwards available, but they also came with much higher risk. Small, skilled forwards are going to either work out as a top 6 forward, or be a career minor league player. Zacha still has that top 6 potential, but also has a very high chance of being a useful roll player if he doesn't put it all together.

Agree completely... and that's why I rate Zacha (still) very highly.

And that was my point not many guys from that draft class seem to have the longevity you would expect from the alleged greatest ever.

Longevity is often key to the Hall of Fame. You want the best class ever to produce some Hall of Fame players. Who among the 03 draftees would you consider a Hall of Fame player right now?

And I don't want to hear "it's too early to tell", there are guys drafted after that we know will be in.

Sorry for getting sidetracked here, but it's something that's been bugging me for a couple years now

Likely

Shea Weber (elite two-way D for many years and more to come)
Ryan Suter (elite two-way D for many years and more to come)
Ryan Getzlaf (near PPG, 1 Cup through over 700 games)
Corey Perry (potential 500 goal scorer, Hart, 1 Cup)
Patrice Bergeron (THEE elite two-way Center of his Era, Selke, 1 Cup)

Outside Chance

Brent Seabrook (3 Cups, as good a #2 dman as any in his era)
Brent Burns (would need to remain on D and continue 50-60 point seasons into mid 30's)
Corey Crawford (2 Cups so far, getting better with age, Osgood 2.0?)

I always got a Kovalchuk-esque vibe from the guy. Big, wicked shot, strong puck handler.

Doubt he ends up as good, but always my vibe.

20 players from that draft have 400 points or more. 5 300+ goal scorers

It's the depth of high quality talent that makes that draft special.

So many 1st liner forwards and 1st pairing D its crazy

Other Devils' fans might see it as a disappointment but if Zacha turns into a 30g, 50+ point 1st line player Id be thrilled

He hasn't yet scored 30 in an OHL season and we are talking about him as if he's going to extrapolate well to the NHL..
