Zacha is a FAR safer pick than Barzal

All Barzal will be is the bust of this draft - Zacha will be one of the top Czechs in the NHL for the next 20 years.

Ya Barzal's ceiling is "so much higher" that he slid far down from his projected draft spot and went basically 10 picks after Zacha (So looks like many teams dont think Barzal is quite as good as this board).

I could easily say Barzal lacks the goal scoring ability to be elite.

Zach Parise fell in 2003. Drafted after Hugh Jessiman. Guess the scouts aren't always right. There are tons of examples of late first rounders outshining top 10 picks.

You can say what you want, its just an opinion. I get that you're higher on Zacha than others. Hopefully you're right.

I was pretty much one of the very few on this site that lobbied for months that Zacha was a top 5-6 pick.

Then Bobby Mac comes out with his scouts survey and they agreed ranking Zacha #6.

Then comes the actual draft and he goes #6 to the Devils.

It looks like actual NHL people (scouts, gm's) think much more highly of Pavel Zacha than internet fans.

That's all fine and dandy, but again, these "actual NHL people" are wrong often. There just regular people who are fans of the game like you and me. It's not like its all that difficult to become a scout, especially if you are well connected.

I'd venture to guess at least like 80% or more of the people inside the game are MUCH more qualified to give hockey opinions than me or you.

The point remains that actual hockey people inside the league really like Zacha. Sure scouts get it wrong often but they also get things right alot too.

It would have been so easy for any team in the top 10 to pass on him considering the year he just had.

Maybe the scouts did get it wrong and Zacha will be the third best payer from this draft year when all is said and done. He brings a special blend of skills to the table, gotta love the upside.

And you also said the Devils have the best d core in the league. Zacha has a much higher chance of busting

I said Nj has a top 3 best young defense in the league - care to disagree?

But nice try, you should perhaps learn to read a tad better. Especially when bouncing from entire forums just to attack a poster. Cute, is what you are.

...and people on this board are even more wrong.

I for one think Zacha is not a risk pick at all - offensive potential always will be a "gamble" and that goes for Barzal, Marner or even Eichel for that mather. So going for a player with perhaps more of a physical edge than other equally offensively compentent players will most of the time be a safer pick. If Zacha trails down at 30 and barzal at 36, then be it. Nobody knows jack **** at this point.

Question - do you think teams start working on the defensive aspect more with some players knowing that they has the potential to excel at that part of the game(?), or do they teach them defense because they didn't really reach that offensive potential that the scouts thought he would?

Feel free to hook me up with a scout job btw, would gladly fly around the globe and watch kids play hockey.

very nice rebuttal - loved the information you provided to prove otherwise

The information you presented that he was replying to didn't include any information, it was a statement of your personal opinion that didn't prove anything or give any reasoning for why you think that. I see no reason why he would have to provide any information to disprove your baseless statement when you didn't provide any information to "prove" your statement in the first place.

I had Zacha at 12 among forwards.

I had Barzal, Connor, Rantanen, Merkley, Meier, Beauvillier all higher at F, as well as Provorov. While we are loaded at D, Provorov is also a stud and would've made our D core much more dangerous offensively.

Again, just my opinion, and I hope I'm wrong.
Zacha was actually my #1 target at 7 for the Flyers.

I think in early June I made a post with my top targets. 1 was Zacha and 2 was Provorov. Zacha goes to the Devils and Flyers take the guy I wanted who was left.

Zacha's size/skill/skating package is top notch. All a matter if he can put it all together on a consistent basis.

Here is a nice tidbit for the doubters

No center was better at shutting down McDavid then Zacha

Zacha >> Barzal

McDavid scored 17 points and was +5 in 8 games against Sarnia (regular season + playoffs). Zacha had 6 points and was a -3 in those 8 games.

He hardly shut down McDavid lol.

It really is hilarious the butt hurt over a player that went 16th overall. Practically half the league passed on Barzal, but sure, we were wrong not to take him 6th overall. :biglaugh:

My theory is that Zacha did not put up over PPG last year BECAUSE he has to get acclimated with North American culture. There is a severe language barrier, and playing hockey without proper communication is harder than most armchair gm's think. Another possibility is that he didn't get along with his teammates because of the poor communication levels that existed. I know for me, sometimes when I don't understand someone or hell, even when I text with someone, I often think someone is being mean or disrespectful to me. Maybe he felt this way or MAYBE he got made fun of for his lack of english PLUS being a rookie doesn't help.

He belongs in the NHL this year. He is going to shine.

It was not an easy choice anyway. After the top-5 it became kinda unclear.

I probably would have gone with Provorov personnally, but I certainly don't claim to be sure of anything. A few others intrigued me too, but time will tell.

I just hope they didn't take Zacha over Provorov because of needs. I'm not a fan at all about drafting for needs instead of taking the BPA.

The problem was that every time he started to get into a rythm, he ended up either hurt or suspended (also missed time for WJC). Many offensive players need to get in that rythm to put up big numbers - you hear about it all the time. Patrik Elias is an example - he's been historically terrible (production wise) in October. Zacha was a great pick.
