Honestly I don't think anyone from the 22 draft will win the 23 Calder.
Very unlikely, yes. I like Beniers odds. He’ll be a good player, probably gets 40-50 points next year with decent two way play, but has the upside for 60ish. He probably gets into the top 3 but comes up a little short, but that’s just my guess.

How has Beniers skating looked at the NHL level? All the scouting reports I read about him talk about his 2-way game first but then bring up what sounds like impressive skating.

His skating is great. He is very quick and has made some really nice plays using his speed. He’s an immediate impact player for Seattle.

He was super noticeable against the Devils on Satuday night (Coming from a Devils fan). It's no surprise he scored his first goal that night and it no suprise he has 3 pts in his first 3 games. The kid seems pretty well rounded of a player , his skating stuck out to me a good amount too. He's really a good pick for a franchise to start to build there team around. Wouldnt suprise me to see him being their captain in the near future. People tend to underrate players in the draft years where the 1st overall pick doesn't have a McDavid/Matthews/Hughes level prospect.

Smart kid. I think both his parents are Ivy League grads, so the apple didn’t fall far.

As far as hockey, what a huge step he took this year. This is exactly why you want guys to come back for that 2nd year to really dominate and carry it over to the NHL right away. I didn’t think he had a Toews like ceiling after his freshman year but I think I may have sold him short. He was dominant in all 3 zones this year.

which says a lot about how meh the seattle forward core is. Beniers has a nice future but this speaks more about the Kraken needing more talent.

Wish he fell to the Ducks but at this point much happier than I was with the growth of McTavish. Beniers is going to be funnnnn to watch. Future captain.

Yep he was originally committed and planning to play at Harvard, but the uncertainty brought on by Covid sent him to Michigan. I’d say it worked out quite fine.

I had him at #1 in my mock draft his draft year and he hasn’t moved an inch for me. I’m a USA hockey homer so I’m biased for sure but Seattle really got a great player in Matty Beniers.

Aside from the speed, skill, and compete he possesses, he plays the game like a vet. He needs to work on his poise a bit more. But, he plays like a guy who’s been in the league for a long time. I’ll be absolutely shocked if he doesn’t win the Calder.

Saw a guy in Lincoln, MA with a Berniers Kraken jersey today. Seems like he deserves it.

Guys a stud. Wish he fell to the Ducks.

If you solo isolate and watch just him. I did it last night a couple shifts, he is ALWAYS moving his feet. You're mind will be blown with how much ice he covers on a single shift. He is almost ALWAYS in the camera frame. Brayden Point type here. He's my Calder favorite for sure. The motor, skating, edges, "want", skill put together is something to love.
