I didn't think the silver medal toss was a big issue. He played hard throughout the tournament and earned that medal. He can do whatever he wants with it. He doesn't like losing and didn't want to keep a second place medal, nothing wrong with that. He didn't insult the team, coaches, country.
If you don't want the medal you stick it in a box and forget about it. It was obviously snubbing both the tournament and their opponent. Not insulting his country, but it ought to be embarrassing them. Seems everyone else supporting Sweden is of like mind though.

Sad thing is it was a terrific game, well played by both teams and actually well officiated when the there was really only two missed calls (including the quick whistle). Canada was classy all the way though and don't deserve a bunch of sore losers trying to tarnish their victory.

Sweden played great, too bad they didn't have the leadership to respect the sport.

Well, when your coach doesn't make himself available for interview after a game, and instead allows teenagers to speak for the team. Also the discipline after the empty net goal, with players slashing and Steen on the ice again after what he did in the US game. And then the media repeat the unfounded diving/bias BS... Literally have not seen one Swede acknowledge that they acted like buffoons. Not a good look at all. Hard to like or respect sore losers.

Scandalous!

Andersson did that to send a very clear message: I do not accept losing. And he sent that message very clear, as evident by most peoples reaction.

The same guys who get worked up over him throwing the medal fall in the same vein as someone who overvalues someone who has "character", and by character they mean someone who is a yes-man and gives the same copy-paste answer to every press guy who approaches them. Andersson showed true character in doing this, the fiesty, hate to lose character that every GM salivates over.

On his performance in the actual tournament, I was impressed. Didn't expect this much scoring from him and he was good defensively. Rangers more than likely got a good pick as opposed to my prior opinions (i.e waste of pick at that slot.)

Or he was being a poor sport, protesting imagined injustices and disrespecting his opponents and the game.

Absolutely he showed great determination to impose his will on the game, during the game. That's the reason to think he has the right character to be great, not his antics after the game which just show immaturity and a lack of guidance from his mentors. Was selfish with his lack of discipline and lucky not to take more penalties.

The consensus was that the Rangers reached, but he definitely looked worthy of the pick.

Get real, not a single GM in the NHL would condone what he did. You’re living in a dream world.

They'd be realistic and understand that he's just an immature kid though.

There are two distinct types of character that seem to be getting conflated here. His on ice, will to win and compete is off the charts. His composure and maturity are what the antics put in question. He's young, but it has to be a small concern.

Niklas Andersson om kritiken mot Lias

Here is what his father said (Google Translate):

What do you think of the criticism that came against Lias after that with the silver medal cast?
- Yes, what do you say about it? He was there to win. Then maybe he did not have to put it that way, but that was his feeling just then. I think he quite well explained how much he would win in his way. Then I can not say I thought it was amazing to throw it up. He could have given it to someone besides maybe.
- I do not have a single medal up and I have no idea where my are. But I know how much he wanted this, like the captain and everything. There are many emotions you can not really understand when you do not know the whole story. But that's him, a guy who wants to win everything he does, both on and off the ice.

The medal toss was childish, but hey, he's a teenager, and hardly the first 19 year old to make a dumb decision in an emotional state. It was the probably the biggest loss of his career to date, and he didn't take it well, but ... so what. He had a great tourney, I'm sure the Rangers will be very happy with his play, even if they're likely a little disappointed in his childish medal toss at the end.

The fact people are still angry over this and discussing this is ridiculous. It is being blown way out of proprtion by certain people

"Hes gonna face repercussions for this in the future" get over yourself and stop to think about what you are saying

Naaaaaw.... now he disrespects the sport for throwing away his consolidation prize, huh? Good theres people like you, with moral standard that stands for ”tru, real gud hockiii” and the ”canadian way”, teaching others whats kosher or not

????? Do you know any GMs? Why wouldnt they want a player on their team that dosnt accept losing? If they were handing out silver medals after a game 7 in the SCP, I bet that most of the players on the losing team wouldnt even get in line for it. Its clear that you and others have either (a) watched to much of Don Cherry or (b) never competed on a high level before. Ive finished bort 1st, 2nd etc in tournaments and I know how much you dont care about second prize.

It's kind of funny to see how Rangers fans flock in to defend what he did by trying to justify it with things like "He's a winner and just hates to lose".

C'mon, you know if he wasn't drafted by you guys that you'd be in the same boat as the rest of the world and acknowledge what he did was completely disrespectful and poor sportsmanship.

That being said it's understandable that he's a young, emotional, immature teenager still.

”Rest of the world”? God, you sound like you’re from the 1800th centuary

Most of the world is not angry with Andersson. At worst reception on the move was 50 50.

Can I ask what was disrespectful about it? Look at the difference from Europe to North America.

Read this article: Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho gives away his medal to fan | Daily Mail Online

This has happened multiple times with Mourinho but he is praised for his gesture where Andersson has been hunted like a dog by half the media and branded childish, sore loser, crybaby, unsporting and disrespectful.

Get a grip. He's a kid who showed he wears his heart on his sleeve. He didn't want it so he gave it away to a fan. Just like Mourinho and if you read the article, he is quoted about saying how he gives his medals away.

What's the difference between Mourinho & Andersson? Is it the fact that some North Americans are overly sensitive and when someone does something out of the ordinary they are criticised and pelted with abuse because its not 'professional'.

Mourinho handed his to a kid wearing a Manchester United jersey after the game. The optics are a bit different than throwing it into the crowd to an opposing fan right after receiving it.

The only thing really dumb about this is that Andersson just created needless controversy around himself. I could care less what he does with his medals. Pretty much everyone else is talking about him being a solid kid and a good leader. It was immature, mainly because he's created a situation where he will be asked about it 2000 times.

If I was his agent, at this point, if he really doesn't want the medal, I would put it up for auction with the money going to a charity of his choice (for example something like Make a Wish). That would be much better optics for him. It would also turn a negative situation into a positive one.

"Needless controversy"

To who? Rangers fans do not give a shit about this. In fact, I'd say most of us either like it or are completely fine with it.
