C/LW Jonathan Drouin (2013, 3rd, TBL) III

Should be the favorite going in to next season for the Calder. PP time with Stamkos and might even see regular playing time with Stammer.

Can't wait to see the magic!

I wouldn't bet on him playing with Stamkos next year. There is a log jam of forward talent in TBL. Kucherov was killing it in the AHL before being called up and he's been third line most of his time at the NHL level. Johnson and Palat are top 5 scoring rookies this year. Killorn has been an all around excellent player as a sophomore. Then you have Stamkos, MSL, Filppula and Purcell.

Tampa is going to be a contender for years. Whatever line Drouin is on, he's going to be in the running for the Calder. If Quenville trusts Teravainen defensively enough, he could be centering Kane and Saad next year. Q doesn't seem to trust Pirri, Handzus is too old, and Shaw isn't good enough for that role. He'd be my co-favorite with Drouin.

They have no intentions of sending him back to juniors next year, so he may get the Brett Connolly treatment - stuck on the roster as he has nowhere else to go. What happens with Purcell, Panik, Pyatt, Crombeen, and Malone will dictate his place.

lol people were calling him the favourite for the calder this year and he wasn't even good enough for the nhl yet

i'm sure he'll play next year but isn't it pretty far fetched to assume he'll being playing with stamkos? i mean tb is a good team now and has good forwards

"Not good enough" wasn't his issue. Most prospects drafted that high don't run into a team with Tampa's problem of a forward logjam and Palat/Johnson had earned their chance. They also wanted to explore him at centre, so a season in the Q made a lot if sense

It is pretty unlikely to get quality time with Stamkos though, depends if he earns it in training camp!

really? because Pierre LeBrun said the Tampa scouts said he wasn't strong enough and his skating wasn't good enough for the NHL level at that point. Maybe he was just making stuff up :dunno:

It's all true enough that it forms the basis of sending him back, which presented the opportunity to get a look at him in the centre position for a season while putting on some size and muscle. As good of a skater as he is, he plays (and will be asked to play) in traffic a lot, and vision/quickness only gets you out of half of your battles. Also gotta be able to plant those edges against men without getting pushed off the puck too much, and they didn't think he was there quite yet.

He's a very good skater, but a lot of players that are drafted as high as him aren't strong enough to play in the NHL yet. RNH was not strong at all, but he was able to play because he's not much of a traffic player. Drouin is.

Sending Drouin back was the right decision for the Lightning. He is being tried out at center, and has stepped into a bigger leadership role.

He'll be dynamite in a few years when he's finally paired with Stamkos.

No one particularly gelled with him in the beginning of the season, not that there was much time to develop any chemistry.

I could see the following lineup:

Palat Stamkos St. Louis
Kucherov Filthula Douin

Not really far fetched to see him placed with Stamkos, but like Kucherov we could see some defensive grooming on the 3rd line at first.

P.S. anyone got a source for what Lebrun said

Probably have to have an ESPN ("Insider") login, and ability to search back to some time between Sept. 30 and Oct. 4 (which is where I see a vague reference to Lebrun/TB scouts commenting on the subject earlier in the thread).

Having watched Drouin play for 2 seasons now, to say his skating isn't ready for the nhl is utterly ridiculous.

Wow. You should try to get a job as a scout with Tampa since you clearly know so much more.

I remember him making the comments posted above. It wasn't on ESPN...they were discussing it during intermission on TSN at the beginning of the season.

Thanks for your input keyboard warrior. I am not questioning Tampa's scouts. I am questioning that the scouts even believe what Lebrun is reporting. Drouin is not in the NHL right now because he would not be getting enough ice time for his development. It was also clear that they want him to play center and learn the position as he had played on the wing most of the time with the mooseheads.

Drouin is fast and is extremely hard to get off the puck down low. Albeit this is based on playing against chlers. However, when playing along side Mackinnon he looked to be on the same level in the zone and I think Nate might be holding his own in the nhl. ;)

lol, I'll take Lebrun as being more credible than you

And the fact you couldn't tell yourself that MacKinnon was the more NHL-ready player really says it all.

Drouin should be a good player but I think people are exaggerating how easily he'll adjust to the NHL. I expect him to have an above average year next year for a rookie but I'm not at all surprised he wasn't ready this year. Most players aren't.

Not really sure where I said MacKinnon wasn't more NHL ready. All I said was Drouin was comparable to MacKinnon in the zone. I'm not surprised Drouin isn't in the nhl either, I am just saying the reason he isn't there is not due to his skating ability.

I'm also not going to pretend I can predict what his production will be in the nhl next year, as you are simply guessing. Obviously there will be a major adjustment for him from playing against teenagers to NHL players. You really went out on a limb there.

i think his skating is not the reason he is not in the NHL, his skating is not even bad or anything, it is still above average IMO he is not a speed demon though....but the reason he is not in the NHL is because strength, rushing him because of size, plus there was a few other things i am not going to discuss on here why he was sent back.

I don't recall LeBrun ever saying that. They sent him back because they had the luxury to work on becoming a center and working on his defensive game.

Actually, he's right - LeBrun did say that on TSN shortly after he was returned to Halifax by TB. He also said that he had to improve his strength/conditioning.

This. I don't know what those guys were arguing about. Drouin's skating isn't what held him back. It's more to due with the logjam in Tampa's system and his need to build strength, and perhaps somewhat to do with the fact that he's starting to play centre.

Here's the Insider segment referenced earlier:
What happened to Jonathan Drouin's expectations in Tampa Bay?

Pierre LeBrun - It surprised me and a lot of other people that he was sent back to the juniors, but not if you spoke to some scouts that watched him in preseason. One of the things that I heard from them is that he didn't have a lot of pace in his game in the preseason. He tried to beat players from a stand-still and there was also some questions about his conditioning from an NHL standpoint.

But let's remember something. This guy - just two years ago - was playing midget hockey and so this would have been quit a jump for him. Two years ago, another team in Florida - the Panthers with Jonathan Huberdeau - also picked third overall and he was sent back to junior. A year later, he wins the Calder Trophy in the NHL. The same thing could happen to Drouin, so no alarm here. But obviously, he did not have a great camp.

There was no spots open for Drouin in a Lightning uniform. They can give you whatever excuse there is about playing Center...but at the end of the day Tyler Johnson won the Third line Center spot outright. Now TyJo has been playing in the first line which is a job vacated by Stamkos and playing with MSL. TyJo is a beast of a player that is leading all Rookies in points and doing it against every team's first line.

Even at the Wing there was no room...with Panik and Palat coming out of the gate slotted in the third line. He just didn't beat the Calder Cup winning Rookies we had that were 4 to 5 years older and more developed.

Yzerman has patience and there was no room on the squad. The Avalanche had room on the squad for a third line Center...Lightning did not. You have to scout the Lightning not just the player to understand there simply wasnt any room and Drouin was going to get pressboxed and waste a year. If it wasnt for Yzerman's rookies being so freaking beastly good...Drouin would be in the NHL right now. If it wasnt for the dumb CHL/AHL player age rule...Drouin would be in the AHL right now and would have gotten the call up when Stamkos went down.

Now now, he's TIED for the lead.. and MacKinnon has played 1 less game. ;)

Jonathan Drouin et Luca Ciampini se sont bousculés à la sortie de la patinoire. Les caméras de @matv étaient sur eux.

It means Drouin and Ciampini (his teammate) jostled at the end of the second period. TV cams got it so we'll probably have it online soon.

They lost 4-3 in SO.
