C Joseph Veleno - Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL (2018, 30th, DET)

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

1+2 to bring him to 10 points in 13 games.

Has anyone seen him in the past few games to say whether he is adjusting to the league yet? I saw him very early on in the season and he was timid.

Crazy potential though.

He seems to be adjusting very well to the Q. He's already a step faster than almost everybody. He's responsible defensively, very good on the forecheck and is great at coming up from behind and picking players pockets. His confidence is growing and he keeps getting better as he plays more aggressively. His vision is elite and the puck just sticks to him as he's stick handling. One thing he definitely has has to work on is his faceoffs, as he's been atrocious so far, but that should improve as he gets stronger.

Has 10 points so far but still hasn't really broken out yet. His goal last night was an absolute beauty, skated circles around the Titan twice on a 4 on 4. That seemed to take a weight off his shoulders as he hadn't scored since opening night.

All in all I've been very impressed with him so far and think he'll continue to improve at a rapid pace.

On a couple of occasions this year he has been the fastest guy on the ice, he is aggressive on the forecheck, & diligent on the back check. Once he gets some upper body strength to match his foot speed & hands, he will be awesome. I love his game thus far!

Sort of reminds me of a McDavid/Crosby mix. He has that aggressive, feistyness of a Crosby where he attacks players, finishes checks, but he also has the speed and stick-checking of a McDavid. I wonder if he makes the U18 team if Saint John doesn't go deep in the playoffs. McDavid has 66 points in 63 games, I wonder how Veleno does.

what a dumb ass dirty move by the halifax player

hope the young rookie is ok

He may not be a Tavares/Ekblad/McDavid level prospect, but he's no Sean Day either. He's highly talented, is likely going to be a very high pick when he gets drafted into the NHL, and is more than holding his own as a 15 year old in the Q this year. I think they made a good choice to let him play, there's nothing written in stone saying that exceptional status should only be granted to generational player.

Anyway, it was a little dust up. Nobody hurt, and it will all be forgotten in a couple days.

On another note, Veleno is the real deal. He's not McDavid level, but he is a treat to watch.

So what's he equivalent to, a top 10 centre like a Stamkos or Tavares? It's been a while since we've had a French Canadian superstar.

Different situation, MacKinnon is from Nova Scotia, Veleno is from Montreal. Does that make Veleno an Anglophone Quebecer?

Either your a Canadian or a French Canadian.

He's not a French Canadian. His french is reminiscent of Ontarians and their up to grade 8 bonjour french lessons in highschool lol.

Perhaps one of those two kids in the 2019 draft will be that ''star''.

He can understand it well enough though if not perfectly, he's played in Quebec minor hockey most of his life after all. It's not as bad as you say, but almost anyone can tell it's not his first language.
