why is raymond in the discussion but gunler isnt

I don’t think he’s as good, but I’ve yet to see him play since his improvements this season. I buy into these improvements, but it might be easier to place him among the top players, if I see it myself. I saw him play last season and he didn’t look like a top 10 pick.

I’m usually not a fan of wingers going first overall. Ovechkin and Laine types are a different story. The value of PPG wingers isn’t as high as 1C’s, 1D’s or the odd generational goal scoring winger, like Ovechkin or Laine.

That’s why I mostly named centers and defensemen. It’s not a draft with a clear 1OA, like 2018 or 2015, so players like Lafreniere or Raymond are players that I would consider as 1OA options. They are the two current best players from the 2020 draft, in my opinion. Other wingers could factor into that discussion, but I doubt it. I’m not even sure the value of those two wingers will hold up. Their value is limited. I think whether they compete for 1OA will depend on what happens with the better defensemen and centers in the draft. This is my philosophy for all drafts.

Very underwhelming tournament for Foudy. Doesn't look like a 1st round talent at all.

Most players draft stock isn’t judged based off a preseason tournament. He absolutely is a first round talent, probably a top 10 one.

I also have read otherwise. I’ve read that he’s played a smaller role on this Canadian team, but doesn’t have the counting stats that look good in the box score. I haven’t watched any of these games, so I couldn’t say which it is, but this tournament doesn’t make a high first round talent into a non-first round talent.

Never said otherwise. My comment was based strictly on his play in this tournament alone.

I highly doubt he's worthy of being top 10 in this draft.

It was certainly insinuated that you are basing that off a preseason tournament. You are saying it in the middle of this tournament, not anytime else.

Foudy wasn’t that far from scoring 1PPG in his U17 season and he did that on a bad team. It seems highly unlikely he won’t average 1PPG or higher this season, unless you expect almost no point improvement from last season. Combine that with the unquestioned best skating in this draft, and I don’t know how that’s not a first rounder. His brother has nowhere near the talent or stats and he comfortably made the first round.

Limited to a 3rd line role for much of the tournament, and although didn't blow up the score sheet, he and his line generated a lot of scoring chances that didn't get burried. IMO if he would've played in the top-6 with special teams opportunities, the narrative would be different. That is to say, he didn't do much to elevate his stock -- more or less stayed about the same.

Yeah Foudy is a 1st rounder the main issues with him is consistency and scoring ability. Similar questions as Dach had heading into his draft year.....with obviously different styles of play. I don't think Foudy is on Dachs level but he has a year to prove he is.

Foudy needs to learn to play more on the inside of the ice in the offensive zone. Part of why he doesn’t score many goals is because he plays too much on the perimeter offensively. An outsized number of his shots come on breakaways. He could get more shots if he drove to the net more.

He’s capable of playing in these areas of the ice. He does this in other zones, but I think his skating against junior players makes it easier for him to not have to reach the inside of the ice against players of this level when he has the puck in the offensive zone. This reminds me a lot of how Zegras played.

Two goals in his first game of the season. I can't believe how low some people have this guy ranked. His brother was a top 20 pick, and JL is better than Liam in every part of the game. Maybe two way game is even, but offensively and skating is an edge to JL.

In the 89 draft 3 players from the Belleville Bulls went 3,12 and 21 in the first round and all 3 were drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I think part of his low ranking prior to this year is the small number of goals and as you outlined in an earlier post if he drives to the net more and plays a less perimeter game some of these questions on his game translating to the NHL will be quelled and his stock will go up.

From the off ice testing for the prospect game:
“Forward Jean-Luc Foudy of the Windsor Spitfires, ranked 20th by NHL Central Scouting in their Midterm Rankings, finished atop the overall standings in on-ice testing based on results across the 10 different categories”

Just like his brother, both are physical specimen.

Actually surprised he wasn't the fastest 30m guy beaten by Jacob Perrault. Although, I would think Foudy is faster over his first 3 or 4 strides which is much more important than the speed you can reach over 30m.
