C Jack Hughes - USNTDP (2019 Draft)

Wouldn't he still be too young for NCAA hockey next season?
He would need to complete his senior year of high school before college classes start in the fall, instead of taking the normal route of being a high school senior next season. Ryan Poehling did something similar so he could play with his brothers at St. Cloud State.

Being selfish, I wouldn't mind seeing him return for his 2nd season with the NTDP -- only so that I can watch him play in person for another season. :naughty:

I read that article, but I'm not sure how much I trust what the author is writing. He also speculates that Hughes could play in Europe after finishing with the NTDP in 2019 -- just like Matthews. The situations are completely different -- there is no way an NHL team is going to want Hughes to play in Europe after they have made him the #1 overall pick. Matthews went to Europe before being drafted #1 overall. Seems like lazy reporting to me, so it's difficult to take anything in the article seriously.

I'm probably reading this article more with the eye of a journalist, so for me, what he really is saying is: it's NDTP for next season and for the time after that he considers college hockey or junior ranks in Canada (my bet here: the Hughes family is trying to tone it down a bit with the NHL start right after NTDP to keep expectations low and also to not come across as over-confident!). quote: "Hughes is undecided about where he will play after he is done with the National Team Development Program in 2019. He is considering college hockey and the junior ranks in Canada. “We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. He’s just a kid,” said Jim Hughes, who now works for Pat Brisson, the top agent whose clients include Matthews, now a Maple Leafs star, and other N.H.L. players."

What the reporter says about Europe here is: there would be a third route as well, namely Europe like Matthews did, but he is not hinting at Hughes really considering that route, so I guess that was just to reference that there would be a third route, but it's not really in consideration. quote: "One other possibility is a year of pro hockey in Switzerland, where Matthews played, on Brisson’s advice, before being drafted. Going directly to the N.H.L. after the 2019 draft could be a stretch unless Jack Hughes adds plenty of pounds and bulk over the next 18 months." The fact that he puts these two options together, calling the later "a stretch" tells me: both are rather unlikely at this point, again regarding the NHL it's probably something the Hughes family said to tone it down.

It's really a small detail within the wording and text building, but quite common for someone who learned that profession... but I might be wrong, of course, since I'm a German journalist and not an American!

If I am an NHL team I am concerned with his marketability as a #1 pick. The casual fan may get confused and think their team drafted the wolverine. Given his propensity for violence I don't think this is the type of name the NHL should be associated with.
If this kid is going to go first overall I think it is in the NHLs best interest to require him to change his name.

I just hope this team doesn't lay a huge egg, because i think thats the only way he doesn't break Matthews NTDP scoring record. He's 7 back to tie, with at most 4 games if they reach the final, thats well within reach, but not if they play the way they have been and get bounced earlier.

Pretty crazy I think he can best it , especially if they keep Farabee up on the line with Hughes & Wahlstrom

They should operate better with Farabee. Gruden on that line makes little sense. Its a line that needs a better defensive presence to begin with, which isn't Gruden, and Gruden can't keep up with the speed that Hughes plays at, nor is he skilled enough to make plays on that line.

yep, never really understood why Gruden has been there to begin with...I guess it is the same theory of putting Maroon with McDavid...to open up more ice, only problem is this is the big ice surface and Gruden will only shine brighter in the wrong areas which he has done here. The bigger ice does not help him or his purpose on this line.

I said prior to the tournament starting that Wahlstrom- Hughes - Farabee needs to happen and likely will....and here we are..go back to this line and see the scorched Earth they leave behind!

The offence bailing out the D
cant beleive there is no better D ( appart from Hughes) not available

This is issue i have with NDTP model
they focus on 20 odd players for 2 years without real focus on tons of other potential late comers

the defense was great today, no bailing out at all - I think the team gave up like 15 shots overall lol!

sorry but they (D) have not been good in this tournament
not for a D core that played all year together
not one should be in top 20

kudos to hughes farabee caufeild whalstrom

They did give up a few odd-man rushes, as is their curse, including on Russia's only goal. Overall, though, it was a better defensive effort than normal.
compared to the first few games, night and day IMO.
run and gun style of game, I can live with some odd man rushes as long as the in zone coverage tightened up and players didn't look lost in their own zone which was much better...if they continue this play, should be a solid march to the Gold

Don't look past the Czechs -- they beat Team USA at the U18 Five Nations tournament here in February. I was at that game, and was surprised by how well the Czechs played that night. They struggled in their other 5 Nations games, though, so hopefully they shot their wad against Canada today.

2 games left in his season. 3 points to tie the NTDP single season record and 4 to break it.
Hughes may have another opportunity to set, or extend, the record. The NTDP U17 team won their USHL playoff series against defending champion Chicago last night. They open the Eastern Conference Finals against Youngstown on Tuesday night. I am not sure how USA Hockey will handle the roster once Hughes and the other U17 players return from Russia, as this is sort of uncharted territory for the program. However, there is a chance Hughes, Turcotte, Caufield, York and Knight could rejoin the team later in the series -- games are Tuesday & Wednesday in Plymouth, Friday and Saturday in Youngstown, and the following Tuesday in Plymouth. Should the team advance past this round, there would be another five game series for the USHL championship.
