it's actually a really good comparison if you just ignore everything about both players
Not a very good comparison considering one is almost 200 pounds.
Yeah its always just about physicality and size that makes players what they are. It has nothing to do with skating, hands, passing ability. Big player good small player bad.

Obviously not the season many had hoped for, but how has he looked lately?
Has he made strides from the beginning of the season?

At least they have finally tried to move him to the wing and play with Hischier. Although, this probably should've been done earlier when they were breaking him into the league. When I've seen him, he's at least generating some stuff. Whereas some other rookies have been essentially invisible when I've seen them, at least in a positive way. Absolutely, not the season people were projecting though when they were throwing around terms like best since McDavid or near-generational.

Looked good last game. That first line of Hughes-Hischier-Palmieri looked a little lost the first game or two, but last night was their best so far. Had a great assist on that Palmieri goal and generated a couple of other good opportunities. I think he looks like he belongs out there, and though he's not dominating the league like some of the top3 picks, he already looks better than most of Devils' older prospects/ahlers at just 18 years old.

assumed from the start of the season they would put him on a stacked line on the wing(which I think they didnt do much of all). about time IMO.

This is absolutely the season people were expecting... Why does this narrative keep getting pushed that he was expected to produce a lot more. Nearly all the experts said he WOULD NOT have an immediate impact, but in 2-3 years would be an absolute force.

Now go find the 1 or 2 people who posted hyperbolic opinions on HF boards as proof he was expected to be Mcdavid.

Hughes was getting abused all game against Detroit. I'm glad he decided to stick up for himself, even though the way he chose to stick up for himself was stupid and dangerous.

What happened?
DET was giving him the business all game, particularly Bertuzzi who was targeting Hughes all night and crushed him in the 2nd period.

Then in the 3rd Hughes took another big hit by Fabbri and finally had enough, a few seconds later Hughes took a run at Fabbri as he was exiting the zone. Stuck his leg out and there was a nasty knee-on-knee. Bertuzzi came over wanting to fight Hughes but Joey Anderson came in to protect him. Fabbri went down the tunnel and didn't return.

He had a target on his back the rest of the game, to the point where Hayden replaced Palmieri on the top line to be his bodyguard. With 40 seconds left in the game Bertuzzi came in on Hughes late and with a slew foot. Hayden immediately skated over and crosschecked Bertuzzi in the face. Hayden got a 5 minute major and game misconduct, Bertuzzi and Subban both got 10 minute misconducts.

Can't find the Hughes/Fabbri hit, but here's the end scrum

Yeah, this is utter bullshit.

This. Big picture, Hughes was always supposed to be a player 2-3 years down the road. He wasn't drafted for what he'd do his first year. Long term with him. Only some enthusiastic posters said he'd post ungodly numbers his first year.

I'll give 93Leafs credit though for at least saying he's generating chances, which he definitely is. The kid has been making passes like the one to Palmeri last night to put NJ up 3-0 on Detroit throughout the entire season, but instead of Palmeri on his wing, it's been washed up Wayne Simmonds or Miles Wood. Kid should definitely have more points and has been robbed of them throughout the year, but hey it is what it is. It happens to everyone.

Kid has learned what can and can't work in the NHL. He used to take the puck in front of his own net like he did with USA hockey, and quickly learned those plays won't work at this level.

Our GM just said this too "What he's learned is invaluable this yr; we know we'll see a diff. plyr next yr. A yr older, more mature physically & mentally. When Jack's season ends, he needs to rest, then get in the weight rm & start a summer program to get ready for season 2"

Kakko was supposed to be the guy who steps in and produced since he played against men. Some posters on here even said he was better than Laine and other established star players stepping into the NHL, but statistically has been one of if not the worst NHL player this year. Everyone develops differently.

Not worried about Hughes. He's defnitely faced adversity probably for the first time in a long time and has learned a lot. He needs to take what he's learned from this season and apply it to becoming a better hockey player in the future.

No it isn’t.
Glass half full. We get it.

Hughes very well may have been drafted for what he is down the road...but, wait a second, so is everyone else. All else aside, he’s having the worst season for a first overall pick in the history of the modern NHL, presented with ample ice time, given the opportunity to make it work with very good and elite players, and dedicated powerplay opportunity. I’ve never seen a player so easily pushed around, and he obviously has his struggles away from the puck (although so does practically every 18 year old), but is also pacing for 28 points and 10 goals with only 16 EVP and 6 EVG. A quarter of his production came in a single week, and he only has 6 points against current playoff teams. SIX!

The worst rookie season. To say all the experts predicted this and everything is going swimmingly is...I’ve gotten too many mod warnings to keep going. Take a look at the way the Devils marketed the kid and tell me everything is going according to plan.

This subpar start to Hughes’ career does not take away from the legitimately elite potential he was drafted for, but discarding it out of hand is foolish. This season has shown me that he has yet to prove if his calling-card skating ability can be consistently gamebreaking away from the perimeter, and his physical weakness and lack of a strong shot are real impediments to his game that he will have to overcome. Those are subjective opinion statements, but can anyone really refute them with evidence?

If a guy like Dach had received similar opportunity, Hughes would have been surpassed in scoring by a player who has shown incredible talent away from the puck and in the difficult areas, and is as raw and full of potential as anyone.

Looking forward to the response(s).

His PDO is .973 with a 5.11% on ice sh%.

His GF% is 35.5%, while his xGF% is 47.7%

He's snakebitten, awful puck luck. He should probably have about 30-35 points right now, which is more or less where you'd expect him to be after 54 games.
