I only agree on the fact that he's small and has a "Hollywood teenage star" face, which makes him get more hype.
He may be stuck as a teenage star unable to translate his skills.. but I'd be kind of shocked if it happened though!

Hughes hasn't been on Kakkos level on international play so far but that is irrelevant to NHL, current superstars have either sucked or flourished in the WJC.
Maybe starts out as Stamkos on his rookie year, still playing a bit of a junior game and adapting to the pros as the games go on. We'll see..

Correction to title "I'm hoping that Jack Hughes will be a bust"

Something about people who feel the urge to make negative prediction threads, just so they can say I told you so later, rubs me the wrong way big time. Wanting players to be busts shows lack of love for the game.
I thought people watched hockey to see talent in display and some "rough and tough" times too. Hoping a player busts is like preferring to watch someone play poorly over someone giving a show. Really?? Must be hating the guy or be cheering for a rival in order to want Hughes to fail.

Unfounded criticism of his personality with no proof of any sort of character issues sure makes this prediction seem like wishful thinking

I don't think he'll bust. He's way too talented to just fizz out like that IMO. Nevertheless, I voted yes out of respect to the thread/OP.

I bet many people on here havent even seen him play except for the odd game/highlights here and there on tv and also clips on youtube.

The usual HF scouting tools

He did:

1. His style of play (his game) will not translate to the NHL
2. He is too soft to be successful in the NHL (nothing to do with his size)
3. His shot will be an issue at pro level
4. His hockey IQ/sense is not as great as people claim
5. His personality will be an issue at pro level
I agree with some of this, particularly his shot and style of play. I think he should have taken a year to round his game out against older players, IMO the NHL already drafts kids at least a year too early and a super skilled type like him should always take their time instead of jumping right in. He has a lot of growth left and could be a superstar. The ability level is insane and betting against him isn't so straight-forward

As a Leafs fan I can definitely empathize with NJ fans about this whole situation.

Let's look at what GeorgeLeafer thought the last time an american went #1 overall when a finnish player went #2: Predict A Bust

So, take this opinion for what it's worth.

nothing
Lmao. Matthews' just finished his ELC and is already at 111 goals. 9 Behind what GeorgeLeafer predicted he may finish his career with while playing 900 games

A part of me thinks that too. He's good. But I don't know if I buy the hype that he will be more than a 1b/2A C. I think he's more likely to be a Ryan Johansen/Sean Monahan or Nico Hischier tier than anything. Nothing wrong with that level of talent. If he proves me wrong that's fine. But a bonafide McDavid/Matthews type? No.

What is everyone expecting him to be?

I think he has potential to be a very unique player in the NHL with his skating, playmaking. He should be a key factor on the powerplay, 3x3/4x4 and generally a finishing piece to an offense that has goalscorers, size, skating already. He would be awesome on the Leafs or a team that is strong like the Bruins IMO

He’s not going to bust. That said he’s not going to be in the some tier as the Matthews/Stamkos/Tavares etc level of number one overalls.

Finns need to stop this. The crap that is written on here mostly by Rangers/Finnish fans is getting out of control. You couldn’t keep this garbage in the Jack Hughes thread where your fellow countrymen have been acting like Kakko is a god and Hughes is and will always be a terrible hockey player? I hope Hughes lights it up and all the actual scouts who get paid to pay attention to these kids are proven right. Anything can happen I guess, but with a very deep forward core, I’m thinking Jack will be just fine and be in the running for Calder.

In a time where recent 1OA picks have been named Matthews, Mcdavid and Dahlin, it's hard to remember that not every 1OA will make that big of an impact.

Bring in Jack Hughes. A great player, but probably not a game breaker. Somewhere in the mould of RNH, Hischer, or Ekblad level.

I always knew one of Kakko or Hughes would be a huge bust, I just needed to see who the Devils picked before really forming my opinion. But now that I see all the facts, I believe Hughes will be top 3 all time and Kakko will be hanging out with Nail by December. It was really close, but the draft just kinda tipped the scales.

What makes you think this? Based on what you're saying, the majority of scouts will be wrong?

With regards to this thread, I don't get what people have against this kid, especially from Finland. It's sickening.

I would have taken Kakko over him. Big body, ridiculous skills, very serious competitor and was tested against grown men in a pro league last year.

Hughes is small and weak looking, put up ridiculous #s on a Harlem globetrotters team against much weaker teenage competition, and has this phony PK Subban style Hollywood persona.

Where do you get this "majority of scouts will be wrong?" idea. What people say in public and in private are different worlds. No one has any idea what the majority of scouts think.

I think you're hung up on definition of "game breaker"
Normally I see it reserved for truely elite players - Mcdavid, Matthews, Marner, future Petterson, future Dahlin. Those are young guys that you just know are going to be elite driving forces.

The majority of scouts definitely don't believe that Hughes will be close to that. Not to say he won't be a great player and maybe even a couple all-star appearances.

At the same time, still a cut below some of the games beat young superstars.

I think Jack will be a top 20 player in the league within 3 years. He will be Marner, but at C. A slower, but more talented Barzal.

He's gonna be another Barzal. He even said he models his game off of Barzal. Barzal is slightly bigger but still not a big player, they both skate like the wind and are very agile, and have sick hands and playmaking ability. Im sure Devils fans would take that any day. He doesn't need to be McDavid to be a success.
