The sensational rookies ala barzal, matthews, laine, mcdavid, pettersson, Dhalin have really fooled people into believing it's easy to just jump into the NHL and dominate. That simply isn't the case.
Barzal and Pettersson didn't jump into the NHL straight away, can't compare their inaugural seasons. I agree that McDavid, Matthews, Laine and Dahlin have set up some unrealistic expectations in people's minds tho. McDavid is a generational talent and the other 3 were physically exceptionally ready for their age (while also all of them played in pro leagues pre draft).

He's looking miles better tonight IMO. Maybe his first point coming in the third period

Dude has been nailed like 3 or 4 times too. Braun barely bumped him against the boards and now it looked like a car hit him. Many turnovers as well. Flyers flat out dominating

I haven't watched every shift but I watched 3 or 4 and thought he showed some flashes at least. Early in the first he looked much sharper but I'll take your word for it. I like this line much more for him especially right now. This Devils team looks like straight garbage so far though tbh

Huh? His line actually came out ahead in possession and he led the team in shot assists. He was pretty good tonight

Why the AHL talk... he created the best chance for the Devils in the game but Hart made a great save, but the whole team is playing like doo doo.
Yeah, he had a lot of offensive zone time. Especially in the first game, felt like every time he got on the ice, they got the offensive zone. TBH, I think that's when he mostly does OK, in the offensive zone and with the puck on his stick. His issue's with the overall 200 foot game and being a center in NHL.

On the other hand, Coleman was the best Devil the first 2 games and he got completely shut down this game for some reason, shrug.

By the way, did well in "shot assists" corsi-wise, but count the Fenwick shot assists and it won't look as good anymore.

Regardless, the main problem for that game for Devils was the Hischier line.

Agree. You need your top players to play like the top players, and then Hughes doing well will be the ribbon on top.

Yeah... he hasn't been great, but he's far from the issue. its amazing that people are blaming the start on him when guys like.. idk..
Hischier
Hall
Palmeri
Subban
Vatanen
Severson
Bratt
Wood

Have been exceptionally terrible in the first 3 games... add in the fact that we had 2 AHL players in the lineup last night...

Jack isn't the issue. Would just like to remind everyone that nobody has EVER jumped from teh US development team to the NHL, it will take more than 3 games for him to get comfortable.

Last night was probably his best game of the 3. Keeping him with more straight line offensive players, who are defensively responsible, is the smart move while he adjusts to the pro game. Was more consistently getting into open spots and setting up teammates, though he still needs to cut this tendency to just whip the puck out through the center of the ice when he gets into a jam in the corner. By game 10-12 he should look vastly improved compared to games 1-2, similar to the learning curve we saw at the WC.

Yup.
He will learn and crow. It actually does not matter if he just makes like 30 points. More important things happens in his head.
After a year or two he will make 90 points and have huge jaw! :)

Thought Hughes had another improved game tonight. Had some good opportunities, set up some good chances, and at one point he was dancing around the offensive zone with the puck. My one criticism tonight would be he seemed to get ahead of himself at times and lose the puck, which I also remember Kovalchuk doing when he was in NJ lol.

People here sure have strange way to read hockey, i guess not everyone understands hockey like most fans do. (understandable)
- avg hockey fans really should stop ooglng those advanced stats and what not, they paint a pretty picture sure, but gives you false hope

4 games in the NHL thus far, not in a single one has Jack shown that he is NHL ready and belongs with the big boys.
- last night he got pick pocketed and physically out played by Markus Granlund for crying out loud!

Physically, mentally, time and space, not ready. Its obvious he has skating speed and skill, but that's not a enough if you wan't to succeed in the NHL, i don't think he should be playing in the NHL right now.

what game are you watching? Seriously come on. He was one of the better forwards last night and generating a bunch. His line was one of the few effective lines the Devils had last night. He has gotten better every single game he has played. Sure he will get pushed around and flattened just like Nico did his first year.

He will be fine. Saying he shouldn’t be in the NHL is absurd lol

The devils have much bigger issues than Hughes....like coaching and PP/PK issues

Yeah your out to lunch. He played good last night. He looks way better than Hischier right now. Nobody on the Devils has really shown anything to get excited about

I don't either, but that's not how pro sports works. You can't sell your fan base on a superstar first overall pick who needs a year to season at a lower level especially with the recent first overall picks and Kakko playing across the Hudson. Plus they want to win now, if they wait for Hughes they could all be fired by the time he's on the team. I think he's going to be alright, but they're playing with fire when it comes to development on the fly. Also, he's looked better the last two games for sure
