Passing on Eichel for Hanifin is crazy talk. If it was Marner or Hanifin then it's a lot more clear cut for the Oilers, McDavid or Eichel over Hanifin is the smart thing to do period.

If Edmonton end up #2, any chance they pass on Eichel to take Hanifan though? Normally, I'd say that of course, they'd draft Eichel and then trade from within to get that future #1 D, but if you think about it, who is out there and available that Edmonton could trade for within the same age range as their core?

That team has Hall, Drais, RNH, and Yak at forward already and Nurse at D...Hanifan would allow them to round out their young player/prospect pool without trades. They can then
focus on getting some decent veteran presence and a goalie.

I'd say its not totally a far out idea....teams passed on Seth Jones because they wanted forwards...and it's Edmonton...maybe their guy is Hanifan.

They'd be better off taking Eichel and trading RNH for some decent D

I don't see that happening, they've gone BPA in the draft which is the reason they have all those forwards. I suppose it could happen if they think Hanifin is the second best player, but I'm not sure there's anyone who thinks that.

As bad as their defensive group looks now, they do have a bunch of young guys in the system. Nurse, Marincin and Klefbom is a group they're excited about, and they also have Pittsburgh's 1st and their own second which is essentially another late 1st. No need to pass on Eichel because you need defense, you take him and find defense elsewhere.

Yea, I would assume PITs first rounder will turn into a defenseman. Carlo, Zboril, Roy, Chabot, Meloche, etc.

Especially considering that's the range where many of the D are righties. If both Nurse and Klefbom continue to develop the way we hope, they should anchor the left side of our top 4 for the next 7-10 years.

If Jack Eichel isn't nhl ready. this is just a what if. being that he's college, what can a team do with him if they decide he needs more development? I don't think they can send him back to college if he's not enrolled. Can he be sent to juniors or does a team have to burn a year of elc and keep him up?

They can send him to the AHL since he isn't being drafted out of the CHL.

Once he signs his ELC he is no longer considered an amateur by the NCAA and thus could not return to college. Being that he wasn't drafted out of the CHL, his options would be: NHL, AHL, CHL (whichever team holds his rights), or European leagues. Players who weren't drafted out of the CHL can play anywhere. In reality he will be in the NHL with about 99% certainty, but if his team feels he needs more minutes than they think he can handle in the NHL I'm sure they'd send him to their AHL team, not anywhere else.

From the Rumours du Jour in the Ottawa Sun:
Boston University's Jack Eichel, who is expected to go No. 2 behind Connor McDavid in June, will have a decision to make on whether to leave school or not. If Eichel ends up with Edmonton or Arizona, is he better off biding his time and getting stronger in college for one more year?

"My guess it's something he has to consider," said a league executive. "Gives him another year to get stronger and how good are those two teams going to be next year?"
Just my two cents, but I don’t’ think he’ll ever spend time in the AHL. Either straight to the NHL or a second season at BU.

Jack Eichel will not play a shift in the AHL unless a conditioning stint is involved, nor will he stay at BU past this season since he has nothing whatsoever to learn from his own age group.

He will be in the NHL next year, and he will make an immediate impact.

There is a zero percent chance he plays another second in college or even the NHL. This is one of the most NHL ready prospects in the past 10 years. There is not one team that would even consider NCAA/AHL an option. Even the best team in the NHL would have him on the roster in a top 6 role. The question is not which league he plays, it whether hes playing #2 center, #1 center or top line winger in the NHL next season

It would be an utter disappointment if the franchise that selects this guy decides to send him back to BU. Don't make the fans wait for a guy who has absolutely nothing left to prove at the college level at this point.

2 goals and an assist last night in a 6-2 win over Merrimack in the first round of Hockey East playoffs. Watching the game, live I would have said he had a below average game by his standards. But, he figured prominently on the scoresheet. Goes to show what a special player he is.

Alot of players are not worthy of the hype they get, Jack Eichel always surpasses the hype. Just wait until he plays with NHL talent.

Big weekend from Eichel. I actually wouldn't be surprised if he kept up his regular season pace in the playoffs (or even eclipses it). Dude's brought it in pretty much every big game so far this season.

I would almost prefer to have the #2 pick in this NHL draft haha... cause I think Eichel could end up a better NHL player but I cant see an NHL team not taking McDavid 1st.

I am from Canada and have always said this McDavid/Eichel debate is WAY closer than people think. Sure McDavid is having an absolutely insane season this year, but Eichel's game is so damn impressive and think he is more NHL ready than McDavid

I agree on all accounts. I love both of these prospects but they certainly don't seem far off of one another at the moment. I think Eichel may have more success right out of the gate next season as well. Where each guy ends up will be a major determining factor in terms of immediate success, though.
