C Easton Cowan - London Knights, OHL (2023, 28th, TOR)

This thread is a disaster. Some people just NEED to be right on the internet instead of simply voicing their opinion and moving on with their day.

70 points in 38 games for the draft reach Easton Cowan.

Lost in the argument of some of these guys is the fact that Cowan is producing better than players drafted around him that are purely offensive players.

Cowan was targeted for his energy, tenacity, forechecking, intelligence, and two-way play. He just had offensive upside to go with that, suggested by his increased production toward the end of last season. Since then, he’s exploded in that area more than anyone expected.

He completely outclassed Stankoven, a highly rated prospect who’s producing at a high level as a rookie in the AHL, in a head to head matchup in the pre-season prospect tourny. Carried that momentum into Leafs pre-season where he was one of the most dynamic players in camp, getting praise from the coaching staff and Matthews.

I think his offence is more translatable than some of these pure offensive players because of his intelligence and ability to create space with his agility. The biggest areas he can improve is his strength + shooting.

I think Cowan has a very safe floor, like he's gonna be a 3rd line guy just based off his tools and work ethic.

Is he going to be a 1st (complimentary) kind of guy or a 2nd line guy? Maybe.

I think predicting the future in this thread is silly but it would be cool to talk more in the now with him. He's certainly having an awesome season in the OHL - I've managed to see a few games and he just brings a ton of energy, stronger than he looks too. Low centre of gravity maybe?

The skating is pretty projectable too, he has good mechanics but there’s some obvious polish and power to add. Probably won’t hit that average to elite skating spike a similar bodied guy like Point had but I like the upside on it more than the 40 point energy guys the Marlies have been churning out like Moore, Hyman, Kapanen, Johnsson, Brown etc. Won’t have the same straight line burst as Kapanen obviously but has better 4-way mobility with the puck on those rushes.

People that use WJC as a baseline and think it has more value than a current season, prospect camp, training camp etc., is always easy to just ignore and move on and just chalk it up to being new to following the sport.

The crazy thing is he's pretty young to make a great team like Team Canada.

The production wasn't sexy but 0 5v5 goals against in the tournament, held his own for sure.

Imagine actually putting more stock into 5 games in December against teenagers than an actual NHL training camp, preseason games against actual NHL players.

A real good way to never be taken seriously again on these boards.

You post it as "media" and it cant be an x link, they have to be a twitter one.

So for example:

Doing a double take at those %, how is Cal Ritchie so poor on the powerplay as a 6'2" 19 year old 1st rounder in his D+1? This is the time to be a special teams cookie monster...

You don’t see the difference between two top 10 picks expected to be stars compared to two second round picks?

In the second round you are hoping to get anyone playing NHL games. At 28 you shouldn’t be expecting a superstar either. If you get an NHL regular at 28, that’s a good outcome.

Cowan is a good prospect. No one is saying otherwise. The discussion is whether he deserves to be considered one of the best prospects in the league or from his draft.
sure but what you fail to address is the fact that you're whole point of leaf fans continue to hype their prospect like knies et al was met with a fair counter point of - well our studs that did pan out were ridiculed and leaf fans were ridiculed for thinking nylander was better than mantha LOL or marner was no where near hanifan (LOLOL).

It goes both ways.

As for Easton - yeah he's doing well and I think he's going to continue to surprise and be a legit top 6 guy in the league. If he doesn't ah well. Let's see.
